By the middle of the II century BC, Rome has become the dominant force in the Mediterranean. Carthage, Seleucids, Macedon, Greek Leagues, a number of Gallic and Celtiberian tribes were defeated, and it seemed that Rome is invincible. However, the economic and political situation in the Republic was degrading, and the rivalry between the patricians and the plebes reached its peak. It was then, in 113 BC Rome was attacked by the Germanic tribes for the first time. The Cimbri and Teutoni moved from Jutland and Germania and raided the Roman territory. After a number of defeats, among them at the battle of Arausio - which was the worst since Hannibal, Republic has found a new savior in Gaius Marius. This brilliant general reformed the legions and defeated the Germanic tribes at the battles of Aquae Sextae in 102 BC and Vercellae in 101 BC to end this threat. Although Marian Reform was essential for the future conquests, it also planted the seeds of the future civil wars and gave the opportunity to Sulla and Caesar to end the Republic.

And you can help us, if you want to, of course. :-) First of all, our videos will always be free, so any help or support is voluntary. Hey, here's something to cheer you up (from Caepio's Wikipedia page - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quintus_Servilius_Caepio?wprov=sfla1) "Caepio was convicted, and was given the harshest sentence allowable: he was stripped of his citizenship, forbidden fire and water within eight hundred miles of Rome, nominally fined 15,000 talents (about 825,000 lb) of gold, and forbidden to see or speak to his friends or family until he had left for exile..." "...Two versions detail what happened thereafter: according to one, Caepio died in prison and his body, mangled by the executioner, was put on display on the Gemonian steps; however, according to the more commonly accepted version, he spent the rest of his life in exile in Smyrna in Asia Minor." So, yeah, while he did initially get rich from plundering the Tolosan temples, justice eventually caught up to him. Could've been harsher, though.

The germanic people origins from scandinavia. Not much is known about the Cimbri tribe. It is believed here in Denmark that they where from the northern part of Denmark where I happen to be from. Here we have a lot of things called kimbria. Like the most well known statue here in Aalborg is the kimbrian bull. But not many people here actually knows these stories about kimbria and rome. It is all about vikings here, and medieval stuff when we talk about history :)

@@KingsandGenerals Only if I can correct you. You keep calling them Germans, though a German is a person from Germany a country that did not exist yet. The people who would eventually become German was a big mess of tribes just like the Germanic-Scandinavian tribes who also turned into three different countries, Denmark being the oldest one formed roughly 1000 years after the Cimbrian wars. Great video nonetheless.

What if the Cimbrians had attacked Italy with the Teuton armies at full strength they would have been more successful compared to Hannibal's march in Italy, The Romans may have won the war anyway but with the same losses and holocaust after the Second Punic war, And victory was only possible until Marius came to Italy from Numidia, I think the Cimbrians would have reached the outskirts of Rome.

Romes strength was its infrastructure and organization, allowing them to replenish casualties a lot faster than any of their adversaries. The cimbri and most other enemies of rome usually had to gamble on all or nothing in every single battle, as they couldn't reinforce their troops, whereas rome could roll and roll again, until it eventually got a lucky throw and thus won the entire game. Rome lost a shit ton of battles, but hardly ever a war.

@tylerdurden3722

The Gauls told Ceasar that in the past, the Gauls were better warriors than the Germans...and German tribes feared the Gauls. But that it apparently shifted with time to the point where the Gauls found themselves fearing the Germans. Plus, those Roman armies were destroyed due to stupid decisions by Roman commanders. Not really German tactics. E.g., the Germans attacked Marius up a hill, in a frontal charge. Then they lost twice more in frontal charges. The Roman armies that lost were still the old Manipular armies. In some ways, it was kind normal for them to lose. In that time, Rome won wars by losing battles. Like how they beat Pyrrhus, Hannibal, etc. The Legionary armies created by Marius, on the other hand, was a completely different beast. Under Marius, the Cimbri fought against fresh Roman recruits. This was the first time poor Plebs were used as soldiers. They were inexperienced and lacked confidence. Yet the Germans lost against this green army. Ceasar used the same type of army and green recruits didn't fare as well against Gauls. I think Gauls might have been tougher warriors/opponents than the Cimbri if you ignore numbers. If the Gauls launched a 200 000 strong army against Ceasar while his army was still inexperienced, Ceasar would have been a footnote in history.

From your intro in the information section: " Although Marian Reform was essential for the future conquests, it also planted the seeds of the future civil wars and gave the opportunity to Sulla and Caesar to end the Republic." What was the disagreement that started the first civil war?
@KingsandGenerals
@KingsandGenerals 6 лет назад
That is a broad topic, can't really answer shortly, sorry. :-) A good entry book is Theodor Mommsen's History of Rome.
@Normacly
@Normacly 5 лет назад
The seed is the recuritment of men without land. The Marian Reform made Rome into a military power house allowing it to conquer much lands as well as a lot of slaves. Rather then spreading the wealth, the Roman elites hoard the vast of the wealth. They used the wealth to buy lands and businesses, which they used their slaves to make wealth. The Roman commoners suffered from this as they neither could compete with the elites' farms/businesses nor could they compete with slaves for free labor (they are often require to formally join a household to work). In the end, they either have to choose the military where commanders usually give soldiers the most money or rely on "gifts" from elites in exchange for political support. Not surpising, Roman commanders like Sulla and Caesar who got massive wealth from their military campagins are the ones who benefit the most from his system.

These were extremely bloody battles fought mostly with hand to hand, close in fighting. No smart bombs, no air support, no artillery, no automatic weapons, no grenades, tanks, heavy weapons,.ect. It’s beyond our scope to envision the true carnage.

It makes me curious and interested at these wars back then. Tens of thousands of men died, but for what? at the same time I also try to picture what the world would be today if history was'nt shaped by wars like these
@lukezuzga6460
@lukezuzga6460 6 лет назад
This time period is what made Rome the light of the world and you guys presented so well I generally have to watch the videos twice so I don't miss anything! Would you agree the army became so great and powerful when they let landless citizens join? As much as it got weak when they stopped this practice?
@KingsandGenerals
@KingsandGenerals 6 лет назад
The thing is, previously they had enough population with land to form armies, but with the influx of the slaves, the minor landowners started losing their estates and most of them were consolidated by the rich. So, there was not enough population to continue churning out new legions. Marian reform changed that, but it created a certain problem - poor legionary was more loyal to his general than to the Republic. Eventually, Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Caesar became warlords because of that - their soldiers didn't care about the Republic and were dependant on the generals.
@lukezuzga6460
@lukezuzga6460 6 лет назад
Kings and Generals Very good point about loyalties! I'm embarrassed to say I forgot about the importance of it in battle. Makes me go back and think about "He who has the gold makes the rules," and in this context he who has the gold has the loyalties of the legions. Always a pleasure, keep up the good work!

Voltage Drop The republic who couldn't keep the balance of powers, the stability of the country, and that always had some kind of civil war? Nah, I prefer the Empire, and, btw, the Senate also existed in the empire, so, the empire still is the SPQR
@voltagedrop5899
@voltagedrop5899 6 лет назад
+Pedro Salvador compare that to the empire which managed to debase the denarius into worthlessness in only 2 centuries as well as collapse the economy by excessively taxing the middle-class family farms in order to fund the "bread and circuses" that the urban poor who were rendered unemployable by the slaves required. also, the empire never had a clear line of succession and thus most emperors became emperors by marching on rome with their armies, just like caesar or sulla. the senate had no power in the empire as the "princeps senatus" (or later just "imperator") always had the final say and so you cannot call is SPQR.
@pedrosalvador1146
@pedrosalvador1146 6 лет назад
Voltage Drop Yes, you can call it, Rome never was a democracy, also, the Empire made the famous pax Romana, it kept the Roman territory intact for a century, both internal and external, and, really, what's the problem with bread and games? Yeah, the Empire started to crumble, after 2 centuries, and, really, the Empire didn't had a line of succession since the Romans would be kind reluctant when accepting a new type of monarchy, so the empire was basically a empire that the emperor chose his sucessor, It wasn't an hereditary one.

Don't you think Sulla should've been mentioned in this video? During the Cumbrian war Sulla was the military tribune and he was the one who led a cavalry charge against the Germans, which won the war. If it weren't for Sulla, Marius would've been eating shit!
@Ulas_Aldag
@Ulas_Aldag 11 месяцев назад
How fascinating that Marius saved the republic and all of Rome from utter destruction, and solved the most significant problem of the republic regarding the army but at the same, as a side effect of his ambitions for the consulship and eastern riches, created a chain reaction that led to Sulla´s tyranny and the fall of the republic later on. I believe Marius is the most important character in roman history, even greater than Octavian or Ceasar.

No, that was the end of Cimbri and Teutoni.
@neutronalchemist3241
@neutronalchemist3241 6 лет назад
Well, Romans claimed to have found the descendants of the original Cimbrians (of the ones that didn't move) in Jutland still in 1st century AD. However, for the ones that fought those wars, a defeat like those was the end. Even in case a part of the tribe managed to escape, without the best warriors and surrounded by hostile tribes, they were bound to dissolve.
