Machine tool cutter grinding in my garage machine shop. This video shows basic set up for grinding the helical flutes on an endmill in the standard work head using a finger rest. I also touch on grinding primary and secondary relief angles using the flat and hollow grinds, and indicator drop method for non-tilt head machines.
This video is another showing how I apply the cutter grinder for my needs and the ability to further take control of the cutting edges and angles for special applications.
The cutter I have in the head I ground with the tooth pointing upward, that is more risky and cant be done with some cutters. It is best to start off with the sharp edge pointing down.

DeeDee, Now you’re getting into the “mystery zone”. I’ll have to watch this again to have a better understanding of how to use the machine to do the more complex grinding. I’ve got a friend with a working tool and cutter grinder that I’ve never seen him use. I’ll bet I can weasel a way to try it out. Actually doing some of grinding you’ve been demonstrating will help. Thanks again and I’m looking forward to seeing more. Very nice. Cheers, Will

Where to begin is the barrier is that Doozer pointed out. I had text book training at the local school but not so much of that is what I actually use it for. Another obstacle is the machines are often used for just a few or even single functions like sharpening automatic threading dies. What I do is repairs and modifications on very expensive items. If I am repairing a valuable antique, the repair must be unnoticeable as possible of course, that means I have to be able to produce most any shape at any time in metal. The local plastic mold maker faced even greater challenges and used the machine more extensively and even owned the most rare AllTool Rotodex. On another level, owning a horizontal mill with those big toothy cutters, how do you keep those sharp? Right now I see even greater need for the machine and the ability to produce my own tools for little cost. This subject is certainly not as popular as slamming an Axelson lathe into reverse but........

Work head is on the wrong side of your table for your finger to ride inside the flute.
