In a press conference, Braddock (Russell Crowe) keeps things lighthearted until a reporter asks Mae (Reneé Zellwegger) about Baer's dangerous past.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The true story of an athlete who achieved his greatest success against the most daunting odds of his life is brought to the screen in this historical drama. In the 1920s, James Braddock (Russell Crowe) from Bergen, NJ, was a promising contender in professional boxing; he had strength, spirit, and tenacity, but the combination of a serious hand injury and a 1929 defeat in a bout with light heavyweight champ Tommy Loughran sent his career into a serious tailspin. As Braddock's career in the ring dried up, the Great Depression put a stake through the heart of America's economy, and Braddock found himself working at the New York docks for pitiful wages as he tried to support his wife, Mae (Renée Zellweger), and three children. Desperate for money, Braddock turned to his former trainer and manager Joe Gould (Paul Giamatti), who was unexpectedly able to scare up a bout for him, battling John Griffin at Madison Square Garden. While conventional wisdom had it that Braddock was too old, out of shape, and out of practice to have any chance of winning, he defeated Griffin, and continued beating his opponents with a powerful left hook that had been intensified by years of punishing dock work. In a nation desperate for good news, Braddock's surprising comeback became a tonic to struggling workers and unemployed people, and all eyes were on Braddock when in 1935 he took on powerful heavyweight champion Max Baer (Craig Bierko) in what was both literally and figuratively the fight of his life.

FOR THOSE IN NEED OF CONTEXT AND EXPLANATIONS: In the beginning of the film, its shown that Jim and Mae can no longer pay for milk from the milk man... shown by an empty crate outside their home, with empty bottles in it. Mae attempts to comfort Jim (Who's hurt that he cannot even provide something as staple as milk for his family) by explaining there is some left over and she mixes it with water and gives it to the kids. Jim does everything in this movie for his family, going so far as to give up his own breakfast for his daughter because she was hungry, and comforting her by telling her he had a large dinner the night before at the owners club. Hope this helped a bit.

@@SadBheeseChurger That was after the fact, when he gave the slice of bologna to his daughter after heading out for work. Mae had to refill a near-empty pint of milk with water since they were overdue pay for their milk delivery.

@@thatgamer9067 I am glad you liked it. The only things I may love in my life close to as much as God and my family is boxing and my heritage. This movie knocks both out of the park. They even have the great Angelo Dundee as one of Jimmy's trainers for authenticity. The boxing perfectly captures the pre Joe Louis era of the sport while really showing how both strong and morally sound people like Braddock were. One of my favorites

This took place during the Great Depression, and he's extremely poor. It's pretty much his way of saying he's not fighting just to fight, he's fighting to try to give his family a life.

Really not a boxing movie.....It's really a love story.....It's all about what a man can accomplish when he has a woman who truly loves him and truly supports him whether he's down and out or he's on top of the world.....Paul Newman said shortly before he died recently....“The real difference between people….is between those who have had the joy and pleasure of true love….and those who have not”...

When he gave the relief money back, that's what we should be doing. Getting welfare shouldn't be a lifestyle, it should only be used to help people out who need it, and return it later, just like when borrowing something for free. Especially when borrowing for free.

It was a very well done bio on Jim and Max (yes Jim is the main feature but they give so much on Max' life too). The bio also helps to see Max in a different light. He is made into a somewhat stereotypical villain for the movie. The real Max (as you know) was heart broken the rest of his life over what happened to Campbell and Schaaf, so much so (this is more for the edification of anyone else who may be reading) he would still weep about it years later. Amazing book and movie!

Milk, as in feeding his family. It was during the great depression. He could not feed his family, or even afford to pay the power bill. He is fighting for milk. Fighting to keep his family, and nothing was going to stop him.

+Excel Earlier in the movie he brings in empty milk bottles because he wasn't able to afford to pay the milk man. His wife then has to water down a small bottle of leftover milk for the kids.

Angelo 21 because back in those days taking money from the government was humiliating as opposed to nowadays where nobody cares. it meant you weren’t capable of providing for yourself or your family. that’s why he returned it.

Pride .... a few weeks before my Irish immigrant father passed away from cancer in June 1977 he shared with me this memory. First a little background.......... My father at the age of 17 years landed in NYC in May of 1929. He was born and raised on a farm, a poor farm. He was the eldest of 7 when his mother sent him off to America because she correctly believed hardwork in America would payoff and because there was no opportunity for him in Ireland on their modest farm. Five months after he arrived the Great Depression hit in October 1929. He had no diplomas, no formal education that mattered. Just strength of character, unrelenting ambition, and a desire to succeed !!! Anyway... I asked him as he wasted away in his hospital bed as his once strong, fit body from hard work was now racked with cancer at 66 how he managed through the Great Depression. He proudly, yet humbly said " I wasn't one day on the dole (meaning he took no welfare or government assistance) through the entire Great Depression. He said this nearly 50 years after his surviving America"s economic collapse. He came to work, NOT FOR A HANDOUT. He served his country in WWII at Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. And he was honored for his service with the Bronze Star. He was a patriot and loved his new country, America. One of the last things he said to me that night was "this country was good to me". And I said "you were good to each other." Real men don't take handouts !
