Thank you soooo much for taking the time to make this 5 part tutorial! This is the best I have ever seen! I'm french and it was very easy to follow! Thank you!!
Great tutorials. I did really enjoy the full series, just missing that part where we bring all that hard work and finish it with lighting, camera, shadow settings and other. I know this might require another video but do you think is it possible to create kind of “the advanced series’ for this particular project and explain us how to nicely get that 5 stars finish? Thanks in advanced and thank you for sharing.
used this tutorial in 2022 and I'm pretty happy that I found you! although I have one question how can I fold the parts without them intersecting each other? I tried playing with master controls but when I change the numbers it changes back to what it was hope you would still visit here
Apologies for the delayed response, I’ve been working on a solution for that, to help. It’s kind of a weird process, but it seems to work. I’ll be revisiting this anyway, to accommodate for the new C4D layout, as some of the processes have changed, so when I do that, I’ll be sure to update this, to include the solution to mitigate interactions.
Great tut, my only question would be how to subdivide to then sculpt to help with the 'realness'. With my package having some curves when I subdivide I get lots of tri's
Oh my! Thank you so much! I have been fighting with Fold My Design (the plug-in) and this is going to save my a* big time. Are you planning to do any tutorials on FMD? Or rendering? It would be great. Subscribed!!!
Hi gaussi.di_ you’re very welcome. And yes, I’ll be doing a lot more, regarding rendering. I have more folding tuts coming, too. As soon as our HDRI lighting plugin drops, I’ll be making way more tutorials. Thank you for subscribing!
brilliant tutorials! quick one - upon completing the tut the individual parts of the box cannot be rotated via the user data? If I put up the percentage it automatically goes back down, any ideas why that might be?
Thank you for the kind words. In regards to your question, I’m not sure I fully understand. Feel free to shoot me an email with some screen shots or video of what you’re referring to. I should be able to help you out once I have a better understanding of what you mean. Cheers!
Loved all the parts, really helpful! Just have one problem with the cloth surface. It gives a very nice touch to the product but it messes with the texture design unfortunately by ignoring the UV mapping to front, is there a way to keep the cloth without reflecting the UV normals to inside of the box? (sorry if my question seems too confusing)
Not confusing at all. I actually realized that myself, before creating the tut. I should have addressed how to resolve that more thoroughly. Currently, I haven't worked out a solution that can utilize the defined parameters in the cloth surface, to thicken the package in a positive value, while still retaining the UV map texture separation of custom artwork front-facing, and the fill color back-facing. The best solution (so far) is to use a negative value for the thickness of the cloth surface. Now by doing this, you're going to get some very minor intersections occurring on the edges. You can resolve this by enabling Snap, and in the Snap subcategory (if you hold the magnetic icon down, once it's enabled, you can access the sub-menu in SNAP), also enable edge snap. From there, you'll need to adjust each component individually (be sure that Enable Axis is turned off. I made that mistake before, and it messed everything up). The best way I've found to adjust each component is to utilize the front, side, and top-facing view ports. Don't try to do it in the Perspective window. You can, but it might not be as accurate. Let me know if that doesn't make any sense. I'll be sure to amend this series with how to resolve that.
Still couldn't figure it out, it's a shame because the cloth gives a really nice touch, need to continue without it, thank you again for the great work ;)
Hello, I would need to apply visuals to a Polymeric sand bag, your tutorials are great, my only problem is that the bag is rounded and pleated, what would be the best solution to apply graphics to it? Thanks in advance. - JB
Hi Julie, thank you for the kind words, and your wonderful question. There’s actually a much better solution for that, that I’ll add to the pipeline for new content to publish on here. I’ve been building the new Colorcubic site & shop to launch very soon. Along with that launch, I’ll be rolling out new content much more rapidly & frequently. Covid definitely delayed some things, but it also gave me an opportunity to build up a surplus of content to publish. So to summarize, sit tight, and I’m sure I’ll be able to help you achieve your goals with your project. Be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already, to stay apprised of when all that drops. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I’ll be sure to answer them as promptly as possible. 🙏🏾
Thank you so much. However I have a question. if in the future, I would like to use the same package but change the design, can I do it straight away, or do I have to go back from before folding? thank you
Excellent Question, Nancy. Simply go into your illustrator file, where you initially set up the flat package design, copy that illustrator file, and save it down as a different naming convention, and then simply modify the design as you need (like in part 1 of the series). Once finished, open the texture file from Cinema 4D, in photoshop, make a copy of that file (saving a copy using a different naming convention), and apply the new design to that file, following the same steps in part 2 of the series, which you can find here. » ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XiWomsuoZN8.html
As a new comer on C4d I find the series very useful but the hassle lvl is like 1.000 :P Great work though a bit slow for my pref! Subbed, appreciate your effort and keep up & gl! \o
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It is incredibly helpful and you are really good at teaching. I know this is a bit of an old video but hopefully you can answer my question. Like someone else in the comments, I also have a die-line that involves curved lines, it's like a little bag so the two handles must curve in order to meet at the top. Is there any step that can be modified in this same process in order to achieve that? Or would it involve an entire different process? Again, thanks a lot.
Great question. Although I’m having a hard time visualizing what you mean. Would you be able to provide a sketch? If so, I could potentially reverse-engineer the process, and make a tut based on the sketch.
Another doubt, in octane I apply the uvs map but when mapping uvw projection front of one side and rear of the other it shows me the same texture of the two sides, can't it be done with octane like this? thanks again
Hello! These tutorials are great! I'm running into a problem at this stage where it seems like the edges aren't "matching up"? When I reduce the rotation to 98%, it doesn't work due to edges jutting out. Where could I have potentially gone wrong in the tutorials?
I would go back to part 3 of the tutorial series. Some people have reported similar issues, and a lot of the time, it can be attributed to rushing through part 3 of the process. One particular recommendation I can make is that you watch carefully, which mode I'm in, when I'm adjusting the rotation axis of each fold component of the package. A common mistake I made, when I first started mapping out this process, was adjusting the rotation axis in the surface polygons tab. However, adjusting the rotation axis in the surface polygons tab didn't retain the axis change. Those changes can only be made, and retained in model mode. » ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pduVzc92WSQ.html
Hey man. Adding thickness through cloth surface prints the artwork on both sides all over again and so while animating through a certain angle it shows. How to fix this?
Hi! rly rly thank you Amazing tutorial im learning 3d by myself since the beginning of this year, and this really helped i like the way you do the things very quality process i think i will follow your next projects for sure
Hi Jonsu, excellent question; the design process within Illustrator is what you would use to print to make a box. You need to ensure the guides are saved as a separate layer. Most printing companies have a process that would accept the illustrator file. If they don’t, you can save it as a PDF with layers. You just want to be sure that the dimensions you create in Adobe illustrator are the dimensions you want to actually print. Please let me know if you need further clarification. Hey, Loved the tutorials. Thank you so much. Only one thing, I can't reach the cloth trough simulate, any suggestions? I found it under customisations and been trying to follow all tip I found online but under the cloth meny un the customisations there's question marks so think its something different. Any suggestions? Or can I reach cloth from somewhere else. I'm using Visualiza R19. Thanks
Hmm... interesting. Could you potentially send a screen shot? That way I'll have a better idea of what's going on. Also, thanks for the kind words. Cheers! - Michael | Colorcubic®
For sure, I've got quite a few new videos in the pipeline, but I'll add that to it, for sure, as I've had quite a few requests for that already. February, I'll be going pretty aggressively on the channel, so I'll try to kick out the lighting tut during that time as well.
That’s an excellent question. Once we launch the new Colorcubic site & shop, I’ll be addressing any discrepancies in these videos. I understand it’s missing a few desired effects, but overall, it’s a tremendously valuable solution to help visualize & achieve package designs strategies.
@@Colorcubic Sure it's because it's valuable i want to go deeper in the details. The only thing : for my needs i would have prefered to rotate the parts in a more easy/classic way. The tag thing seems a lot of work for no real value (i don't need to animate anything). But the rest is perfect. I would just need to go deeper in the perfection of details like thickness, bending the paper to make it more realistic (in real life it's not a perfect block), the texture of the paper and so on…
Thanks for your Great Tutorial. Really very clear tutorial. I have 1 question: After Add Cloth Surface my material not working in Front and Back. It show only Front Texture. Please help me. Thanks.
Thanks for the kind words. And excellent questions. If you reverse the values in the cloth surface material, it won't result in the back doubling the front texture. That's a temporary fix, but it does work. I found another solution to help, which I'll post later, once I've finished recording that tutorial. Make sure you're subscribed, so you don't miss out when it's posted. Cheers! - Michael | Colorcubic®
excellent, but I have a question, how can I now that it is finishing, once the box is assembled, animate for example only "top fold", because if I want to manage the parameter from "master control" I can't, thanks !!!
I think I understand your question.’ If you only want to animate individual folds, then don’t follow the last step, combining all of the folds into one master controller. Keep them as individual controls instead.
@@Colorcubic Yes, of course, but I thought there was another option, so that there would be both options and to be able to handle the whole set or individually, thank you.
You can mix & match which folds you’d like to group together, and which you’d like to retain as individually controlled. But you’ve definitely given me an idea to think about as a solution. Thank you!
Hi Michael, I make a corrugated case using your example. I changed the thickness of the case to 4mm. Is there a way to smooth out where the case fold? Also, is it possible to add C-flute details on the edge of the flap when opened? Thanks!
Nice! That’s awesome, Vincent. As far as those extra details, that’s something that many people have commented about, (establishing more control over the details & textures of the case). It’s something I’m sorting out new solutions for. One of the things I like to do is ensure is that if a solution works for the latest version of Cinema 4D, that it will also work for past versions as well. Once I have a solution established, and it’s backwards compatible, I’ll be sure to publish a née video of my findings.
Hi, I know this is years late but when we add the cloth surface the bottom texture goes away, maybe because the top expands and covers it. Is there a good way to reskin them properly once we add the cloth surface?
Your tuts are really thorough, you're little OCD and I like it, it's really organized. Can you make a tutorial for motion graphics? I really like your intro
Great question. Every fold is separate, in case you need to make modifications to any particular segment of the fold. However, I didn’t highlight how to add bevels to the corners / edges in this tutorial series. That’s an element that needs to be factored into the design. I do plan on releasing a video that covers that, as enough people have asked about that.
Thank you for this tutorial. it was very hard to realize this with my box, because I has about 28 pieces to animate. Now I have one problem: Some of the parts are crossing each other during folding animation. What can I do? Is there any solution to shorten the animation time of some folding parts? Thanks a lot!
Hi Frank, The process is very in-depth, and takes a few times to really get it, but the process works. It all starts within Illustrator. It helps if you can sketch out the way you want the box to look, fully assembled, and then deconstruct all of the components of the box, as a flat object. From there, you can work out the folds, and which sections need to be nested, etc... I have a 18 piece 6-pack drink container that folds. Took a while to get it dialed just right, but it finally worked. As far as slowing down certain animatable folds, yes, it's definitely possible. You need to tweak some parameters in Xpresso to achieve that. It'll require you determining which folds need to animate in earlier or later. I'll make a note to address this in a later tutorial. Unfortunately I'm a bit bogged down with revising my tutorial process, and improving my production value of my videos. I also have a few Cinema 4D plugins & resources I'm gearing up to roll out, but once that's completed, I'll get back to this. Thanks for the kind words, and interest.
Excellent question. You’ll need to reverse the values on the cloth model. Although I am working on an alternative that doesn’t utilize the cloth surface.
@@Colorcubic also had another question about this same issue. When exporting as .fbx (without cloth surface to retain interior materials) ive noticed when i bring back in the fbx the inner materials is gone even though I see both materials on my object before exporting. Any solutions?
Another excellent question, and yes, I do have a solution. I’ve spent a couple days, the last couple weeks ago, troubleshooting some export settings to save models as .fbx files. I’ll be publishing a new tutorial to cover that. Stand by. I’ll try to get that before January.
Absolutely. As long as the shape of the package hasn't changed, and only the graphics. Otherwise you'll have to repeat the entire process (for now). Working on a way to solve that problem though, to help save time.
Hello. I got to the point where I used the master control to form the box, but instead of animating the box to fold in. I wanted to have a animation rotating it. I was wondering how do I combine the poly objects to be a single object and then animate it to rotate? Then maybe export the animation of the box to mp4? I'm not sure but I'm trying to make a animation for a 3d box. Anybody know how?
Excellent question. You should be able to simply animate the Null object that all of the packaging components are placed within, and that will animate the fully assembled package. Essentially, it acts as a parent folder for all of the individual components.
Hi Zobbi, yes, it’s possible; it requires more steps, but yes, it is possible. This is one of many new videos I’ll be publishing, once our new site & shop launch. Thank you for your patience.
This is a really good question. Do you have a visual example of what you mean? That way I can reverse-engineer the process. Shouldn't be too different.
Thanks soooo much for this tutorial!!! Great explanation and very careful. I got one question. I want load in after effect - element 3d, and dthe problem is how to make the paper of the box more thick. I dont know why but element 3d not open the animation correctly. Thanks in advance
I solve it, the problem was thickness negative :) now i got another problem in element 3d, the back side is the image reflexion and i can not put other texture
