Review of the Arrow Academy 4K UHD Blu-ray release of Giuseppe Tornatore's classic 'Cinema Paradiso' from 1988. Screen ratio is 1.66:1 and sound is Italian language mono with optional DTS-HD 5.1. English subtitles in both UK and USA dialiects! 4K is on the theatrical cut and Blu-ray is the longer Director's Cut. Extras aplenty on the 4K disc with just the Director's Cut theatrical trailer on the Blu-ray.

@@darrenorange2982 I was getting tired in the last hour so we stopped and will continue this evening. Coppola apparently went right back to the beginning and re-edited yet again. I don't like the section where they stop at a French settlement because it upsets the flow and the progress of the film but I suppose there was so much work put into that whole sub-plot that I can understand him wanting to keep it. Fortunately it's cut down quite a bit from the 'Redux' version. Other than that, the colour is far richer than I remember it and a few parts seem far darker and less colourful than I remember in the cinema. I'm going to have to get the older Blu-ray out to check it because I think that looks substantially different to this. The sound is sensational. Overall, it's just bloody fantastic - another work of art to hang on the wall and simply look at. Might have to review something else before this though as I'm getting another couple of chapsI trust for their opinions and enthusiasm to also review it and hopefully get our videos up simultaneously. Funny that i called your Home Cinema (Cinema Paradiso).I've screened this film more than a dozen times in Cinemas (New York City, Los Angeles, Manila Philippines and of all places Tokyo Japan (with Japanese Subtitles) i don't need to understand the Japanese Text i already know this film by heart. Greetings from Cornwall, England Noel. I think you need to get your movie memories up on the web somewhere and somehow. I hope you took photos of your exploits around the world because they would be a priceless way to illustrate what you did, where and when. Cinema Paradiso is now one of my favourite films too. The 4K package from Arrow is a treat - it's just perfect for a work of art like this so hopefully that comes across in my video. John.

@@moviecollector5920 If only i documented the experience , i will surely share with you in a heart bit. The internet and iPhones does not exist in those days. All i have left are Stories and memories to tell. Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is another film i had the privilege of seeing in several States and Counties including at The Odeon LUXE Leicester Square in London and at The Curzon Sea Containers London (where we stayed) in the Summer of 2019 during our Family Holiday pre Pandemic. At least i have photos taken at those Venues. I also saw Notorious at the BFI Cinema during the same UK visit. But i 'm glad that you had the same feeling as i do about the movie. Now, how about a little glimpse of your Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (Remodeled), looking forward in seeing it. That would be the Ultimate Treat for us, your Fans. Good to hear from you John. Thank you young Scribe. Cinema Paradiso is an education in itself but bear in mind that the films they are running at the cinema in the film prior to its rebuild are nitrate film stock which was dangerously flammable and replaced by non-flammable safety film stock a little later. John.

Subscribed. Your videos are amongst the best on RU-vid regarding home video. Would love to hear your thoughts on crash (cronenberg) in 4k as well as don't look now, ghostbusters and the professional. Copollas Dracula could also be interesting regarding the approach he took on that film. And a modern movie like parasite. Or another Korean movie like oldboy, would also be great. No matter what comes next, looking forward to it. All the best from Vienna, Austria. Götz Raimund

I hope he covers Crash, as for Dracula, he said in a previous comment that he found the transfer of the 4K disc to be very underwhelming.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
Yes, Dracula is not exactly a reference 4K disc but it probably represents the 35mm release prints we saw at the cinema quite accurately. It's a dark film - of course because it's 'Dracula'! - but I still felt a little underhwelmed by it. I've never seen 'Crash' but I remember all the controversy. If I see it going cheap I'll see if I can snap it up. As for 'Leon' or 'The Professional', I will get that eventually but the Blu-ray has been in my collection a long time and I've rather watched it to death for the time being. I do have the 4K of 'Apocalypse Now' (the final cut) sitting there waiting for a review as many people asked for that. Somehow I know I'm going to prefer the original version because I always do whenever a film is messed about with. But I'll like it regardless as it's another work of art to hang on the wall and simply admire. Might get Parasite because so many people proclaim it to be really good. But I fear Ghostbusters has little chance as I didn't like it, even with the great Bill Murray in the lead. Great set of suggestions so thank you. John.

Happy 1st Anniversary John and a very timely review for myself personally . I am a retired old time traditional cinema projectionist going right back to the days of carbon rod arc lighting , reel changeovers , screen tabs adjustable masking ,coloured footlights , houselights and proscenium arch lighting in cinemas . I remember showing ' Cinema Paradiso' on 35mm film on it's first release . I later showed the director's cut of this wonderful film too . I have recently sadly had to say a final farewell to two of my fellow projectionists who i have known and worked with for the past 50 + years as they have now gone to that great projection box in the sky . . Naturally this is my number one film as i can relate to it in many ways as i am sure can many other surviving traditional old time cinema projectionists . My other favourite film is of course The Smallest Show On Earth . Those two films bring back so much memories for me of my time in the cinema's i worked in and the people i met and worked with during my career as a projectionist . There are now only a few of us left where i live but we do keep in touch and meet up for a tea and scones and a chat about old times . Cheers for sharing this John and i look forward to more of your excellent reviews . Motor and Over !

Wonderful memories David. The magic is disappearing from cinemas but there are still some that are hanging onto it. I check a film is a film before we go now otherwise having seen so many poor video presentations, we might as well wait and see the film/video in better quality at home. Last Action Hero is another nice cinema film. I might get the 4K of that soon not least because it will be a good excuse to feature LaserDisc and Super 8 again. I also think it's a darned fine and fun film. John.

Thank you cousin Cliffy. I hope all is going well over there. I only started this channel because the pandemic put all our businesses out of business. 3:58 I would guess that is because of a combination of how it is scanned and when they do the grading and restoration they might, to make it look more natural to out digital conditioned eyes, add a bit of sharpening to the image that would deferentially bring out the grain. I have done sharpening on enough 16mm Apollo footage to recognize the look
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
That's my suspicion too but I don't think this one had as much applied as The Fifth Element. Then again, I had a film print to check that one against. I never use 'sharpen' at all in any of my own disc releases because it creates the sort of grainy (i.e. video noise) look that some of these 4K discs are displaying. Good to know we're both thinking along the same lines. John.

Hi John, Every Cinema Projectionists favourite film for obvious reasons and a great review as always, I was a Cinema Projectionist from 1974 till 86 we showed all the big 70s releases including "STAR WARS" in 1977 for 8 weeks and one of your favourites John "ALIEN" for 4 weeks you once said on one of your reviews you can't beat the sound of film clattering through a projector you know it is something special! As you are aware NO 35mm FILM whatsoever exists now at your local Cinema All on DIGITAL HardDrives all the magic of Cinema has gone I'm afraid very little presentation NO screen tabs in most of those soulless multiplexes, even you have screen tabs in your cinema John. Really when you go to the cinema these days which I rarely do modern cinema is of little interest to me I'm more 40s through to 70s for my films, you are really watching a glorified Tv picture blown up I think the sound is always far to loud or to low the reason because ALL the Projectionists were made redundant with the Digital change over a few years back. Any body now just pushes a button to start the show that's not real cinema for me. And all that lovely 35mm and some 70mm equipment confined to the scrap heap! and as you know John those Projectors were built like tanks and would have run for another 50 years a lot longer than these so called 4K Digital Projectors! Like yourself, I have a Blu Ray and DVD collection which I am more than happy with and still have my Super 8 Film collection and give it a run now and then for old times sake but I'm afraid unless you can have your own private cinema like you have John the magic and presentation of real cinema has gone forever! Keep up the good work John I appreciate your reviews and comments you are one of the BEST out there!. Mark Lees - Ex Cinema Projectionist and Film Historian on BBC Radio Merseyside.

What a very nice post Mark - thank you. I think you've summed up how I feel about cinema too but I do always check a real film is running before I decided to see a film because I don't really like to go to a cinema to see a video, however good the standard of the projected image has become. Might as well watch a video at home. You'll have to let me know if I can listen to you on-line the next time you're on Radio Merseyside. I haven't spent much time up in that area but had an interesting visit in 2014 for the 40th anniversary of a particular sports car built at Speke. Drove much of the country in a convoy of 40 of said sports cars that weekend which was rather special. John.

First of all , congratulation with your first year on RU-vid. 11.700 subscribers can't be wrong. This channel is truly a little goldmine of film knowledge. . I remember seeing Cinema Paradiso in the cinema when I was young, maybe 30 years ago. I actually teared up as you spoke and the shots of Alfredo and Toto came across the screen. The fire in the cinema the fights in the seats and comedies throughout this until the moving finale wow what a gem... Thanks I'm typing quickly and digging it out as my 16yr old daughter is prime time to see this film with me for the first time soon. My best to you Dave!!

Now you've made me want to watch it again. Actually, I've been feeling that way for a while. I can barely remember the review video I did for it but I don't like to watch myself and only do it when I feel I need to check how well I did (or not) so that I can try to maintain or improve the standard of what I'm doing today. Cinema Paradiso is a timeless, great film that all movie lovers need to see and this 4K disc is another first class piece of work by Arrow Films. John.

Excellent review! I’ll have to try and pick up this 4K disc soon! Sony just released the Last Action Hero in 4K which you might also enjoy? Picture quality is quite good and it’s a very fun film! I’d also love to hear your thoughts on the new Batman V Superman 4K disc! Cheers.

I still might get that Batman film just to see the IMAX shots and how well they've transferred. I made the mistake of watching the trailer and that rather stalled any enthusiasm I had. But Last Action Hero is one of Arnie's best as far as I'm concerned. I expect I'll get that 4K quite soon as we're about due to watch it again now anyway and it will give me an excuse to show off the wonderful gatefold PAL LaserDisc and show the excellent Super 8 trailer. So quite a home movie history to that one. John.

Congrats on a year! You have such a unique style that I haven't seen in either film criticism or home media reviews before. I was curious if you would ever be interested in looking at the French UHD release of Les Tontons Flingueurs. It is an odd duck of a UHD, B&W film with no HDR, it does have English subtitles thankfully.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
I hadn't even heard of Les Ontons Flingueurs before Anderson so I presume that was a hit en Francais but didn't really do much elsewhere. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Having no HDR on a 4K disc does tend to render them rather academic as that is really the only perceptible difference when you compare to a Blu-ray - until I get a 30 foot wide home screen perhaps! But I do like French films - 'Tell No One' for example. If I see it out there I'll certainly take a look. I do have a 4K of a film titles 'Le Cercle Rouge' sitting here waiting so I may get a French lesson very soon! John.

Strangely the aspect ratio on the original version is 1.85:1 but the directors cut is 1.66:1. Nuovo Cinema Paradiso is one of my top favourite movies of all time. Congratulations on hitting the one year mark John. I bought Cinema Paradiso on blu ray in October last year, but haven't got round to watching it yet. Guess what I'm watching next! On the tour of your vault I see there are still many more to go at, the big reels of Raise the Titanic jumped out at me. ( Another flawed masterpiece. )All the best. Clive
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
That Raise The Titanic is a Super 8 600ft 'Scope cut down and was edited to that length by my colleague from the BFCC Ken Locke. He sadly died almost three years ago but he was a senior editor at the BBC so an ideal choice for Super 8 cut downs and recruited by the BFCC boss man and another BBC film editor Keith Wilton. That 600ft reel is better than the feature even though I like the feature too. It was done in the early 1980s so before Super 8 quality had reached its peak but it's still wonderful to watch and to listen to that timeless score. I think you'll enjoy Cinema Paradiso Clive. I hope so anyway. John.

Found your channel today and your voice feels like I am watching a national geographic or bbc documentary or something. Its so perfect Sir. About the movie, The only movie ending that made me cry. I am stoned heart when it comes to cry during movies. But this movie broke me. My all time best foreign cinema movie. Never ever any movie struck me so emotionally. My only issue actually not an issue since it was the intended look of the movie but I found the film grain to be extremely heavy specially in dark scenes and that takes away the beauty of some of the visuals. I own all releases of this movie including Arrow video digibook they released few years ago. I wish they had scrub film grain just a little bit on this 4k and make it look even as some scenes have very high film grain and some are with fine film grain. Also something most people don't know that this release has a reverse cover art work which is gorgeous as well. You can check it Sir. I subscribed to your channel and looking forward to see more of your good work. Thank you.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
Thank you very much! I haven't said it in any video yet but I think some of this coarse film grain look is coming about because a digital sharpen tool is sometimes being applied to the transfer. I don't know for sure but it looks and feels that way to me. However, I have also found that some fine grain films that hardly had any visible grain on 35mm are still showing more evident grain than they should and that tends to be more prevalent the brighter the image. I don't see this quite so badly as others it seems because I try to set up all my video equipment to replicate the look of film as closely as possible. It therefore might be worth trying the brightness setting down a few notches and perhaps the contrast up a similar amount. Also, if you can find where to do it, play with your HDR brightness at the start of each 4K disc to ensure you are getting the best out of it. Some of them are set way too bright so they need to be toned down. Right now I'm compiling my video review to the the Cinema Paradiso 4K sequel - Last Action Hero! If it goes well I may get it uploaded this evening. I hadn't spotted the reverse cover art so I'll take a look. Thank you for that. John.

They make me love life a bit more each time! :-) My recommendations of movies with similar qualities to them: The Big Blue (Director's Cut) - One of my most favorite movies of all time filmed by Luc Besson. Well I don't think I've ever seen How To Steal A Million so there's another I need to catch up on. @dmitripopov8570
@dmitripopov8570 3 года назад
@@moviecollector5920 "How to Steal Million" is definitely a romantic date movie - Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole! It is very light, romantic, funny and sentimental! At times it feels more like a French spy comedy - like "Fantomas" with Louis De Funes (Inspector Juve) and Jean Marais. If you like such light retro cinema, you will love this movie. Louis De Funes is easily in my top 5 of most favorite actors of all time! Such an amazing comic talent! Funny thing, but when I think of French actors, I immediately think of Louis De Funes and Jean Reno, yet I was shocked to find out that NEITHER OF THEM is French! They are both Spaniards! As I remember, there have been only two versions of "Le Grand Bleu" ("The Big Blue"): Theatrical and Director's Cut. If you saw the longer one, then that is the best one there is! It is like a male fairy-tale! I was very smitten by Roseanna Arquette, then by her daughter Patricia Arquette (plaid in "Stigmata"). Most likely, Roseanna left Hollywood for family and continued her passion for cinema in her daughter. As always, it is very interesting to hear your opinions on these subjects, John!

If you experience more grain on the 4K, maybe there is some type of digital settings that enhance the grain.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
Yes, 'sharpen' - but I've turned it off. I suspect that the 4K masters are released to the distributors for final grading and they are applying a certain amount of digital sharpening. It's not so harsh on this one so may just be how the negative looked or it could be that the scanning process is exacerbating the film grain. I was convinced that The Fifth Element had a sharpen tool applied but I didn't want to say that on video just in case I am wrong. John.

I do like a good thriller or a well made horror movie though so something will come along. Now that I'm thinking about it, a 4K of John Carpenter's 'The Thing' would be another good excuse to do a video about a film that is genuinely frightening, atmospheric and tense. Not something we see very often with modern film making I think. John.

John, just watched your re-upload of 1917 and Gettysburg. I have enjoyed the 4k version of 1917 a few times since purchasing in the summer of 2020. It is a movie, like most war movies, that bring out all emotions. The carry over from acquiring the milk at the farm and then having it for the baby in french village was very special, and captured the inherent good even in such a terrible time. Now, about Gettysburg, i am not sure i ever seen it. I have just ordered it, and based on your review and recommendation, i am sure I will enjoy it. I am a little embarrased. I live in Fredericksburg Va at Banks Landing on the Rappahanock River between the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. After to many years of chasing the dollar bill, upon my retirement, my wife and i finally realized how close we were to Gettysburg and ventued up. Twice in the last 3 years. After seeing this review I thought it would be nice watch this film again. The only format available here in NZ was a rental DVD. Quality was very variable, quite washed out in places. Sound was also poor in places. The 50 minuets of extras was of really very good quality, noticeably better than the main film. On a technical point, they only had one projector, 20 minuets of film! How did they show a 2 hour film. Odd to make such an error.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
The 4K is actually rather good Michael so going back to the original camera negative has sorted any issues out. I think they added a digital sharpen though as the film grain looks a little exacerbated. With regard to the single projector, most viewers wouldn't notice and to add a second or a reel extender of some sort would have spoiled the look of the set and added too much complication. Compromises always have to be made in film making. I've just thought, I think we've already sorted out a trade deal with New Zealand so you may be able to import discs without any hassle now. It's worth a try because the 4K discs don't have zone restrictions on them. Might have to get a mutti-zone player to cope with the zone B Blu-rays though. John.

What a coincidence as I just picked this release up last week along with Top Gun, (partly on the strength of your review for that one), Ten Commandments, and The Blues Brothers. I can see why a traditional film buff would love the story of Cinema Paradiso. Beautiful film and I can't wait to see it in 4K now. Congrats on one year, John!

I hope you like the 4K transfer of Cinema Paradiso. I'd never seen the film before so have no prior knowledge to judge it other than it looked like I was watching a 35mm print to me. Top Gun really should not look as good as it does as it was the Super 35 process which is about three sprockets high rather than the usual four. It's the colour that sets that one apart I think as well as the unbelievable, sunlit photography. As for The Ten Commandments - just about perfect in every respect. Good to hear from you again. Been quite a while we've been communicating on here now. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Thanks, John. I'm going to watch your Too Gun review again for more insight before I watch it. Cinema Paradiso I saw on TV about 10 years ago so this will be a big upgrade from that! Thanks for the acknowledgement. Indeed, my first comment was on the Jaws video and I correctly predicted your channel would blow up! All the best from your Canadian fan - Andrew.

Maybe the grain is more forgiving to human eyes in pure analog film, while digital transferring and processing somehow makes it more apparent and harsher looking.. Sorry if I don’t have a real technical explanation either, just pure conjecture.. I love this film, it pushes the right buttons in a good way, especially the last scene in the cinema..
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
I'm beginning to suspect that some films are digitally sharpened - not this one though - as well as the scanning process exacerbating the edges of each granule of grain. Perhaps the scanning technology needs an overhaul. Don't suppose I'll ever find out what the main issue is. Whatever, it doesn't detract at all from this great film - I only bothered to mention it because I know a lot of people would tell me the grain was too harsh if I didn't. John.

Well I can tell you that it won't be - or shouldn't be - brilliant. It was filmed in a 35mm process known as TechniScope. Look it up. It's a two sprocket high 2.35:1 film frame that is then blown up and squeezed to create normal 35mm 2x anamorphic release prints. Why did they do this? To save money on the cost of the negative stock to film it. It probably sounds ridiculous but it's true. John.

That's actually a few trailers that were on the front of Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace. 'Anna and the King' is one of them and 'The Beach' is another. I just liked the way it looked after I shot it so it's been there ever since... except for the Alien review I think. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Aah right! Thanks. I saw Anna & the King in theatres, enjoyed it. I think I was clouded by nostalgia when it came to the Phantom Menace. You should check out Red Letter Media's prequel reviews if you haven't already, more entertaining than the films.

@@uncledouvee1200 I'm a big fan of The Phantom Menace (that's rather why I ended up with the 35mm print) so he'd better be nice! But it did hobble the two sequels because the lovely little boy playing Anakin Skywalker could not become the most evil villain in the universe. They played that all wrong but looking at the two follow-ups I don't think anything could have saved them anyway. John.
