Simon, I couldn't agree more !!! Not only is the movie a masterpiece, but to me its soundtrack has become something like the star of the picture, an entity of its own. Music from other movies can make me remember a scene or two, but when I listen a melody from the Cinema Paradiso soundtrack, emotions invade my soul in a way no other picture's music has. Blessings from San Juan, PR !!!

In 1990 it won The little mermaid for best original score. I think that Morricone wasn't nominated because the movie was released in 1988 and only after the nomination of Cannes the movie was nominated for the Oscars in 1990, as in 1988 it didn't have much success in the theatres. Who knows, maybe if it was nominated the year before Morricone would had won the Oscar

I remember some critics at the time saying Cinema Paradiso was “overly sentimental”. But all that was to me was a measure of their own world weariness and cynicism. The many charms of this movie are irresistible to anyone with a fully functioning heart. All these years later, I have a CP poster on the wall of my office, and Ennio’s theme song is my phone’s ringtone. I can’t imagine any other movie ever surpassing it as my all-time favorite. Deepest gratitude to everyone involved in its creation.

At 4:08 Jack Lemmon announced the only time in the Academy Awards history that a movie from Puerto Rico has been nominated in the foreign language category. Since 2011, my country, where the main language is Spanish, the language spoken in the competing picture, has been declared inneligible for that prize for reasons not clear, perhaps related to the fact that the island is a U.S. territory, something that has been historically irrelevant when consideration is given to, for example, our 5 winners of the Miss Universe contests, 2 winners of the Miss World pageant and our own Olympic identity since 1948. Aside from that, and regarding this Oscar nomination, Pedro Muñiz, the producer of the Puerto Rican flick, its director Jacobo Morales and main actor Tommy Muñiz, expressed their disappointment for the way the broadcasting of the segment was carried from Moscow, mainly with the annoying and distracting mishandling of the sound, something that demeaned such a special moment, not only for Puerto Rico but also for the other four countries competing. Producer Muñiz referred to it as 'an international lack of respect for all 5 nominees', and a shameful situation that spoiled that part of the ceremony. However, we are very proud of our Oscar winning actors José Ferrer, Rita Moreno and Benicio del Toro. When Puerto Rican born Joaquín Phoenix won Best Actor this year for Joker we celebrated too. Our José Rivera was nominated as screenwriter for The Motorcycle Diaries. Other artists of Puerto Rican roots like Rosie Pérez (Fearless) and Irene Cara, who won as co-composer of Flasdance...What A Feeling, have been nominated. But the Moscow fiasco at the only time a movie from PR would ever receive such an important nomination was a situation that should never be repeated.

I want to remind you that in 1988 when the film was released in Italy it was a fiasco of audience and above all of criticism so much that the producer Franco Cristaldi was forced to remove it from the cinemas. He re-edited the movie cutting about 20 minutes (love story of Toto and the girl in adult age) and re-realised in 1989 but nothing happened the movie remained unseen and not appreciated by critics. The huge success was only, first, with the nomination and then with the winning of the Oscar. And criticism has also changed the point of view. Still in Italy it's difficult to find the first full version. And I don't know what of two versions the Academy saw for the nomination.

Novecento by Bernardo.Bertolucci with Moriconne soundtrack £-) another classic the film also is about Italy during ww2, but it is more of an epic. And yes it has de Niro. Though the soundtrack is probably better. As it includes also Italian working class songs. But it is more a history of ltalian class struggle.

In the mid-80s, President Gorbachev changed Soviet policy with perestroika and glasnost. Seeing that the Soviet Union was crumbling, the Academy in Los Angeles reached out to the Kremlin and in a gesture they hoped would generate future friendship, they suggested hosting a segment in Moscow.
