In 1978, Esperance Rmez and her three sons opened Cinema Riviera, which would soon become Centre Esperance.
Cinema Riviera, named after Manara’s Riviera Hotel, was a haven for Lebanese citizens during the 80s. While most cinemas closed their doors, Riviera opened up to the public to offer shelter and an escape from everyday life, playing everything from Arabic to Bollywood movies. When discussing the history of Cinema Riviera, the Rmez brothers reminisced what it was like in The Golden Age. Back then, prices for seats ranged from 1 lira for balcony seats, 0.5 for middle seats, and 0.25 liras for front row seats. They held showings at 6 and 9 pm, and they were always fully booked with customers coming from Yahchouh and Ghazir. They’d end up picking up 2 cartons worth of kernels from the floor after each showing. The sound of music would travel up and down the streets, letting all the residents know a movie would start in 30 minutes. Families would come in from Beirut to summer in the area and attend screening after screening, all in one day. They even recalled customers knocking on their door in the middle of the night demanding to watch a movie. Their mother, Esperance, would try to send the crowds away. “It’s 1 am,” she’d say, “the kids need to sleep!” But, with groups ranging from 40 to 60 people, the brothers couldn’t help themselves. Business came knocking, so they played the movie. As more people showed up at the cinema, a late-night screening for 60 customers became one for 120. However, the Rmez brothers explained that cinema-going was a culture that faded away. This cinema culture was founded on customers’ respect and an appreciation for movies, which has only disappeared with technological advancement and the decline in the quality of films. With the introduction of VHS technology, movies began coming out on VHS before they reached the cinema’s doors. With no regulations set in place to protect cinemas and Lebanon being on the cusp of the War of Elimination, the cinema closed its doors for good in 1990. Today, the place is still intact. Centre Esperance, the building that held Cinema Riviera, is now the namesake of Esperance Rmez herself.
