Cinematographers reaction to Blackmagic PYXIS!! 

I read something that makes sense today, alot of those big name youtubers are just good at marketing themselves! They actually aren't good at filmmaking

The controversy is specifically between Indy solo shooters vs. production team shooters. The Pyxis is NOT meant to be a handycam with a little flip-out screen you take on your family vacation!

IMO The only camera that matters is the one production gives you the budget to rent out lol. Everything else is lighting and production design, without that there's no film. and you're so right, I wish RU-vid would stop focusing on the specs and what ifs and give actual information on how these things work on set. I don't wanna see a crappy review on the specs of the PYXIS, I want a thorough test on it's in and outs its performance through the rigors of a full production.

Yup this was a fresh take, I got into a fight awhile ago with a RU-vidr after I called him out on constantly changing camera systems and always saying it was the best for his needs but guess what, he’s changing again for this thing. So ever since I’ve been pretty turned off by the RU-vidrs because I don’t think there about film making, they are just worried about staying relevant

This is the truth...I was going to get a red but I don't have the clients or the know how to get the best out of it so I'll stick with my S5 ii

Great video! I feel like the older I’ve gotten and the more projects I’ve done, I’ve fared less and less about the equipment and more about the story and feeling. It’s funny even meetings many DP’s who almost don’t care about what camera and are constantly renting different cameras for different jobs!

Dude, 100%. I definitely am guilty of watching all the BMD NAB videos and gushing over the PYXIS, but luckily I found one of Oren Soffer talking about this exact issue and filming with whatever you have. Even on the iPhone with that free BMP app. Finally inspired enough to get out and shoot, even solo, instead of wishing I had a box cam haha. Great take on the subject!

I totally agree with you. Although new cameras have bunch of great features, It is more important to know how to tell a good story. We can learn framing, editing, lighting, sound design, etc. with current gear that we own. It is always nice to have some cool equipment, but skills should be behind filmmaking - not just gear. There are a lot of crazy-talented people on YT making phenomenal stuff, using simple gear. At some point we know when we can afford a new camera or a gear, and then it is just added value to our skills... By the way the new BM Pyxis is crazy good ;)

you are right. To be honest I think Lots of RU-vid are just advertisers for the brands. the Blackmagic Pyxis is not groundbreaking. It is just an existing camera with a new body. Think yourself and don't believe everything RU-vidrs say

Very reasonable perspective thanks for sharing. I also keep running my C200 and built multiple hackintosh machines years ago 👍. Cfast 2.0 cards have gotten really really accessible so a 1TB that I picked up could keep the C200 running another 10 years 😊😊😊

Totally agree I’m very tired of hearing about what gear people use I’d rather hear about the creative process and how the execute their ideas. Any camera after the past 5 or so years ago is more than enough

None of my clients (primarily nonprofit organizations) care about what cameras I’m using. Having three latest camera doesn’t equate to good cinematography or good storytelling.

Facts. Cameras are tools at the end of the day. Also I love your cat and his IDGAF energy.

I agree. Cameras have become so capable. If you understand how to utilize your cameras sensor then what can stop you? People need to focus on the craft now. Learn lighting, composition, etc. just for the love of god stop focusing on what cameras you do or don’t have. I just consigned my Alexa 35 and picked up an FX3 because I was blown away by what it could do. I was able to get just about identical images out of both cameras with the only discerning factor being the dynamic range difference. You can have the best tools and equipment and still build a shitty birdhouse. Cheers dude

Moji’s video was clickbait and the discussion was less about the Pyxis and more about GAS and spending wisely like a business person. The second problem I have is I don’t see RU-vidrs or anyone else making videos like this except for when Blackmagic releases a camera. I find that odd. And with that. I’m probably done with filmmakers on RU-vid. I tired of trying to discern who’s telling the truth vs who’s talking based on what brand is sending them gear.

My problem with this video is not with your philosophy of how to get the most of what production equipment you already have, I too am still using my C200, it's a great camera and no one that I deal with questions the images that I get out to the camera. My problem is with the tricky click-bait title that you used for this video. This video really has nothing to do with the new Blackmagic camera, your philosophy can be applied to any pice of equipment, be it a new camera, lights, audio gear, guitars, cars, boats, airplanes, whatever. So why not just call it “Cinematographers Philosophy on Buying New Gear” or something to that effect Instead of click-bating and completely wasting my time? By the way, these make the most of what you already have type videos are nothing new, plenty of these around to choose from. Companies are always going to advertise, there are always going to be marketing campaigns hitting your inbox. That’s just the way it is.

I’m not sure what you intended to accomplish with this video, but if it’s in any way to promote your work as a cinematographer, I would suggest taking it down. If you can’t control the light and exposure on your own personal set, then why would you expect anyone to pay for you to manage the look of their set?

Feel this so hard .. I own basically nothing , yet I’ve built my career as a DP/cam op off borrowing and renting camera, lens, lighting packages. Sometimes having my own kit would’ve come in handy but mostly I’m fine. 🫡
