this would be huge for things like my old college's video dept which is currently at the whim of huge camera companies deciding when they feel like giving schools access to affordable gear one thing not mentioned is what lenses are being used, which makes a huge difference and lenses are a big money sink (with cinema grade lenses being upwards of $5k-$10k new) i'm def gonna have to do more research on this i wish we could have this kind of effort for celluloid film, which literally your only options are kodak film or old kodak film

Lens choice would depend on the lens mount, with a project like this i would be shocked if the lens mount wasn't modular since cine cameras already have interchangeable lens mounts
@Probable.Orange

Lenses are pricy for a reason. You couldnt easily open source some high quality glass as a lot of the construction is company secrets. But this project being open source means that you probably dont need to worry about the mount type

@@jacobheinrich4919im not familiar with cinema lens mounts but i dont see any reason why it would be particularly precise or difficult to make one at a machine shop. Precision is cheap nowadays anyway, someone who knows what they're doing can make something way more precise than a camera mount if they have the right tools in their garage.

Super 8 sensor size is too small for cinema in most cases. Wouldn’t go any smaller than 16mm sensor size. Really wish there was a higher end version. It would make more sense to have an upgradable camera when you just spent $5-10k on it.
@TrggrWarning
@TrggrWarning Год назад
He said there are other sensors 1:05 … He keeps mentioning 4k so im a little confused about this and why they made the housing suitable for viewfinder vs small or with lens priority. Lil leery about sizable lenses on that housing. 11:00 that rig and lens looks wonky af, everyone using obscure lenses from the 1960s on these things?
@TheGreatAmphibian
@TheGreatAmphibian Год назад
Up gradeable hardware has been tried and doesn’t work. Default hardware specs aare well balanced, better cameras usually ship with ALL of a better sensor, more CPU, better bandwidth, etc, when new models ship. And the new sensor tech will probably need a new heat sink design, etc. At the end you’re left with nothing worthwhile and the amount of skilled labour involved in the upgrade is nasty. Anyway, your camera body shouldn’t be a big part of your system costs - less than lights and lenses. So selling it and upgrading to a new body shouldn’t hurt that much, at least if you are one of the pros cinema cameras are meant for and are getting the tax breaks. Otherwise buy an old Canon and put magic lantern on it.
@martinlutherkingjr.5582

@@TrggrWarninghe's mistaken about it being 4k, it's HD. From what I can find it's the best camera module for the PI. Others might can be adapted for the Pi, but I don't know what would be involved in that. If someone was to make like a micro four thirds sensor module for the Pi, I would expect it to run 3x - 4x as much as the one mentioned (150-200 instead of 50). Whole project then approaches the cost of a camera from Panasonic. Seems like a neat project though. The fact that it uses lenses does give it an edge over a comparably priced Android phone.

The DNG files are going to be huge but I might take a look at this as I love these kinds of projects. Someone did something similar with the Canon EOS M but with that being a 10 year old camera as a base this looks like it would be a better project to sink my time into. Biggest issues would be the relatively small sensor and lens mount but for what it is this is pretty amazing. I'll be very interested to see if this gets updated for the rpi 5 (comes out in a few weeks). Edit: After some looking into it looks like people have used MFT lenses with 3d printed mounts which probably means you can use whatever you can print a mount for (within reason) so long as you get the distance right. And it's a super 8 sized sensor which isn't all that small. Now if only I had a 3d printer...

Fortunately a lotta people operate a business of 3d printing, some libraries have 3d printers you can commission and maybe there's a con or something you can hit up. 3d printing is becoming fairly mainstream because being able to just make a plastic (or various materials) bit for whatever you need is rather nifty.
@nadtz
@nadtz Год назад
@@DarkTrapStudio I have a crop mood modded EOS M and the DNG footage takes up a lot of space quick. 1 minute of 10 bit footage takes up a GB of space, and there is a bit of a learning curve editing the files. That said DNG has some advantages which is why people use modded EOS M cameras and the Sigma FP for example, and it's likely someone who is doing this kind of DIY project probably wouldn't mind the extra steps in workflow.

A 1080 super 8 sensor wouldn't cut it for most professionals when even the 'budget' cinema cameras (blackmagic) come with MFT at 4k now a days. Some research makes it seem like the resolution limit is because of the Pi but it looks like the rpi 5 won't solve that because it still comes with USB 3 and PCIe 2.0 x1, but maybe in the future. If you don't do CG movies or Still print you don't need more than 4K, you won't even post in more 4K, maybe if you do wildlife but you don't need to crop with a small sensors cause lens have huge reach. USB 3 limits are more on the codecs side than resolution, DNG 4K is huge, H264 8K is riddiculous next to DNG 4K.

Something I am especially worried about is the increasing popularity of electric cars, which, so far, are basically like giant iPhones running on proprietary software. Governments, tech companies, and potentially hackers can most likely do whatever with your car, which is a scary thought, since your life literally depends on the car. This seems like a fun project for people to learn how cameras work, but i think it's a stretch to call it a cinema camera. The sensor being a cheap raspberry pi 8mm makes this more approachable, but more akin to a CCTV camera in terms of quality. The C lens mount is also a really weird choice, as it's almost only used on CCTV cameras today. What you really pay for when buying a "cinema" camera (whatever that means nowadays) is a ton of design, testing, build quality and calibration.

Micro-four-thirds already has limited lens selection, this is a step beyond even that. 12 bit DNG doesn't make a lick of difference on such a small sensor. I agree it's a cool project, but that's about it. It has no more potential than that. There's a reason pro grade cameras cost thousands, and it's not for quadruple profit margins I can tell you that much. 1:06 "you can also put other sensors in this" actually, the guy who made this said himself on reddit that he's already trying to make it work with the same sensor the BMPCC 4K uses. That's what a lot of people with this more immediate view of things usually fail to get. First of all, you can absolutely get good quality images with the setup as is - way better than what you could possibly get by any other means within this price range. But something like this existing - especially with it being open source - allows people to iterate and improve upon the design it's been made in ways that proprietary hardware just doesn't allow. I mean, it hasn't been a month yet since the dude published his open source camera, give him a break lol It already is a valuable thing for film schools in empoverished areas, for example. Cant wait for the day they allow a full frame sensor to the Pi, its a long ways away since it would destroy other camera companies ability to compete but maybe some day! If the MIPI protocol was opensourced then other people could use different boards than the official Pi which would be epic.

i know im gonna get flak for asking this but what makes this better than say a modern mid to high end phone camera? access to lenses?

Rather interesting project... considering it uses the sensor similar in size to one inside GoPro Hero4 Black, with the features and video capabilities according.

This looks like a Pi based product has caught up to the Bolex D16 from a decade earlier. It would be interesting to see a full list of sensors with CSI2 connections that can work with this project, especially some of the Global Shutter units that go under used for action cinematographry.

The removal of hardware video encoding on raspberry pi 5 has made a lot of projects like this worse, which sucks

traditional film runs at 24 FPS which would help with data. TV and home video use higher framerates which, through association with the convention, people tend to see as looking "cheaper." Most movies are still shot in 24p.

This is an impressive project, but I only see it for photographers of which I am not. If I ever consider getting a professional camera though, The CinePi or a similar project will be the first thing I check out!

It doesn't really look like it's made for photographers. Cine cameras are really only built to do video well

I've been following it for a bit and actually thinking of building one for fun/webcam (I own cinema cameras since I'm a cinematographer) and thinking of even doing a comparison video between just how close the CinePi can get to real industry cameras.

Bigger sensor and options to mount professional lenses could make this something worthwhile for video shooting

This would be the best dashcam in existance. Sure it's a bit larger but seems like with a compact case it would still easily fit

10:20 yes, but the shake makes me seasick. Stabilization is an issue, but I can see this project taking off, couple it with a vintage lens like a Helios 44m and you could get some crazy interesting footage.

there should be like, an Open Source Hardware shop online, where people can make a (down)payment on a completed & tested as functioning build from some opensource design listed there. makers all over the world can make parts & organise the assembly & testing until sent to the customer. might require blockchain-technology🤔
