In today's episode of #CineTipTuesday I talk about "SpeedRail" sizing!! Sounds straightforward right? Not really! Drives me crazy, and can easily confuse you! Makes it extremely confusing when buying accessories or speed rail itself. I will explain the difference between pipe and tubing, the actual different measurements involved, the difference between what people "call it" and what it actually measures!! Basically exactly what you need to know so you can know what your talking about and order the correct sized parts the first time! Work smarter and avoid mistakes.

Way Way up here in Canada we carry and use nothing but 1.5" as it can be used just about all rigging from car mounts to fly swatters to tenting, just about anything. Sure the 1.5" is bigger but ultimately takes up less room on the truck because we don't carry the two sizes of speed rail and fittings, If we need large quantities we can get it from the scaffold rental houses as that is the size they use. We also carry a few 20' lengths of 1.5 steel tubing for when we need the real beef. Thanks for the great video, well explained, the difference between pipe and tubing measurements can be confusing. Great website as well.

Makes sense. Just depends what each grip truck has most fittings of etc... but between the 2 your rational makes total sense as well. Thanks for the comments it's great to know poeple are out there watching and paying attention! .....and hopefully enjoying ;)

So for car mounts what do you prefer? I'm running three FX30 fully rigged out maybe around 8-10lds all together. I'm looking at ProAim Airwave V530 and your guys Grip stuff this to drives me nuts. I do want to move on to Alexa Mini cameras so 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 is the question. I've decided I want everything CineMilled for my Car rigging. Putting a budget together now.

1-1/4 is more than enough its what the big hollywood boys use here in american for massive rigs and cameras and small ones. The main reason why we tend to use 1-1/4 in the US is because if you own a grip truck and have to store a large bundle of 20+ tubes in the truck the smaller diameter adds up quick and saves alot of storage space. The other issues is weight...if your building a large structure it also saves a lot of weight or it if have to acarry it to the top of a hill or stairs in abuilding.....it's lighter to lug around especially when your carrying a bunch of them. So mostly its a practical decision.

That said.... alot of the european suspension arms and the arm the Proaim copied to make thier all based on 48mm(1-1/2) tubing so if you have all 42mm(1-1/4) tubing then you will need to purchase one of our speedrrail shims and you can still use the larger clamps on the smaller tubes. Problem solved. cinemilled.com/p/speedrail-shims/

FYI - All my personal rigging gear is 42mm(1-1/4) I prefer the lighter smaller size. More than enough for everything I have ever put together. To compliment that I have alot of 5/8" rigging parts especially for triangulation purposes or lighter smaller rigs on motorcycles etc... Feel free to call if you wanna chat about your setup 323.553.1604

If you can afford to only invest in one size speedrail rigging system, which is most optimal choice: 1 1/4" or 1 1/2"? We will be mounting a RED Komodo typcially or perhaps an Arri Mini in the future. I live in the United States.

Well one of the reasons many US grip truck mostly carry 1-1/4 is that if you have a "bundle of them, say 10 tubes they take up alot less space in the truck than 1-1/2. Also they weigh less. But if those aren't concerns Maybe get 1/1/2 clamps because if you own our speedrail shims, you can always size down your clamps and so basically you automatically have rigging clamps for both pipe sizes.

What would be the benefit of having a 1" 1/2 pipe as opposed to 1" 1/4? There have also been times, where I would ask for cheeseboros and I would always get speed rail that is too small for the cheeseboro to clamp on to. Modern has the right fitting for 1" 1/4 pipe but I feel that some G&E houses carry larger cheeseboros while giving me a smaller diameter speed rail.

Yes its a pain, they are easy enough to mix together as they look similar unless you look carefully! The main benefit of 1-1/2" is that the larger size offers more strength and resistance to bending than the smaller 1-1/4" comes at a cost of a larger footprint. If you rigging inside our outside a car with lots of tubes things can get a bit cramped. If you have clamps fairly close together like on a car rig then 1-1/4 is plenty strong enough and deflection isnt an issue. Also 1-1/2 is more expensive and heavier....so if you dont need the extra strength then its a waste. It's better for covering longer spans where those things start to matter.

Convert to metric and all of this confusion will end.

It still wont, problem is nothing measures (no matter how you measure it) in accordance to what people "call it. The problem is not the measurements is the nomenclature. It's super dumb and very annoying as someone who lives by measurements every day it drives me NUTS!

You be surprised how many grips really don't know some of these things.
