I would suggest the following spiritbox songs: - holy roller (official video) - rules of nine (one take live performance) - blessed be (official video) Older songs like the mara effect, constance or hurt you are still good but for some reasons they didn't resonate to me much, they're "just" good songs to me, while the three above are all masterpieces to me.
Also Constance for something completely different from them and the version of Holy Roller with the singer from Crystal Lake. Though for another female metal band what about In this Moment? Their stuff isnt quite as heavy in general but very good.
Since i didn´t seen it in the comments: Yes, the drums are programmed and not recorded. The drummer of the band lives in Philadelphia (if i remember correctly) and since there is a pandemic they couldn´t record together. So the entire album is programmed in the matter of drums
There is no comparison in Courtney's ability to waver in between a vocal deliverance and desperated question at the same time....uncopied thou Courtney!!❤❤
We suggested it, you checked it out, and you enjoyed it. Ahh, love to see it! As much as I hate to say it, I don’t always love female metal vocalists either. In fact, I dislike more than I actually like. I used to be a music journalist/critic, and I think I got exhausted by the symphonic metal female vocalists (Nightwish, Epica, etc). (I acknowledge their talent, but the music isn’t for me.) I had a period of time when I wouldn’t even listen to a female-fronted metal band with an open mind because I was SO tired of that sound. Either it was symphonic metal…or it was bands like Cerebral Bore (when Simone Pluijmers was with them). There were very few bands in between those with vocal diversity that I enjoyed. Straight Line Stitch was the first for me. I actually passed on Jinjer the first time I heard them (“Sit Stay Rollover”) because I was so jaded then. Thankfully, I rediscovered them (and reaction channels) thanks to LostInVegas several years ago-and I’m so glad I did. But then Tatiana set the bar SO damn high, which is why I still struggle with female-fronted metal (and don’t like Infected Rain). Spiritbox may be my only other exception at this point. ANYWAY…glad you checked out Spiritbox! “Holy Roller” is a must. (There’s a one-take of it as well.)
I'll take a look at it! And I understand what you mean completely. I always found the symphonic metal thing to be cheesy, and the rest I found to be annoying quite frankly. I love female vocalists, but metal is a dark / heavy / angry genre - testosterone does dark / heavy / angry better imo LOL. And yeah - Tatiana set the bar FOR SURE, and so far no female in metal is touching it. ..this was solid though. I like Courtney, so like I said: that's 2 female-vocal metal bands I actually like now lol. Thanks again Jen!
Holy Roller and Rule of Nines, both of the one takes for those songs! Absolutely incredible. And I love the EDM thing you pointed out, I can totally see and hear that now! She could go anywhere with her voice. Her talent is unreal and she is devastating.
More female metal vocalists? Some suggestions: Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Lauren Hart (Once Human), Adrienne Cowan (Seven Spires), Melissa Bonny (Ad Infinitum), Carla Harvey and Heidi Shepherd (Butcher Babies), Fernanda Lira (Crypta), Vicky Psarakis (The Agonist), Angela Gossow (ex Arch Enemy), Maria Brink (In this moment)... and many more.
As a curveball, Nighwish - Yours Is An Empty Hope, Wembley live. Floor does deep growls behind Marko's cleans in the chorus. And of course in After Forever she did those, too.
@@dropthehammer1360 Circle With Me is a basic rhythm with pop or more radio style sound. It's very easy to follow and memorize. The Mara Effect is a more technical song. It has more complex composition, poly-rhythmic sections, and just more technical playing and singing all around; More nuance for the enthusiast to appreciate but less average-listener friendly.
It's not at all a bad thing that Spiritbox reminds you of EDM and/or other non-rock genres. Courtney has stated it many times that her influences include a lot more musical genres than just metal. They also have a lot of electronic production in their songs. This is one of the things I love about them, they're not afraid to get inspiration from all over the place and actually innovate. At a time when so much metal sounds alike, it's like a breath of fresh air. It's what this genre needs.
Should check out Lauren Babic of Red Handed Denial (tracks Empire or Elysium) and Crazy88 (Nitroglycerin or Bastard From a Basket). Also Avienne from Vintersea deserves a shout out.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it or not but Tatiana has said that Courtney has been a big inspiration for her over the years. Courtney has been doing it for a long time. She was the second lead singer for the band Iwrestledabearonce. As far as re ecommendations for songs, one of my favorites is Perrenial. The Mara Effect live at the Silverside Studios is a must see also.
i saw her with iwrestledabearonce along time ago and it blew my mind back then. i think they were opening for either upon a burning body or august burns red i cant remember which concert it was.
Band's guitarist and vocalist are husband and wife. The whole band is pretty talented, IMO. I think they have a pretty unique sound, mixing beautiful, etherial electronic sounds and beautiful vocals with very metal, very aggressive guitar riffs and breakdowns and growling.
Concerning female metal vocalists, did anyone yet suggest Arch Enemy? And another band I would recommend is Seven Spires, for example Drowner of Worlds
Most/all of their album recordings have programmed drums, they've said so on podcasts. Partially because this was recorded over the pandemic and they're drummer lives elsewhere. Surprisingly common in the genre but it'd be hype if that changed also second checking out mara effect live or any of the serius xm performances on their youtube.
It’s funny you mention the thing about EDM vocals. I think a few months after you recorded this, they did a collab with a big electronic artist with her singing on the track. And yes they are very open about their programmed drums. But they do have a really talented drummer they take on tour.
It’s been two months since this reaction? You’re missing out on some spiritbox!! You need to check out -The mara effect the 17 minute version -Belcarra -Holy Roller
For other female vocalists that have killer growls/screams, check out the vocalists of the bands Rolo Tomassi, Obscure Sphinx, Oathbreaker and Battle of Mice. They don't all sound like Tatiana or Courtney, in fact they vary in styles quite a lot, but I don't think it's fair to prescribe one style in which metal vocals are supposed to be delivered. I personally even tend to appreciate more vocalists who have an unusual approach that can set them apart from others. Here's one song from each of the above bands that I think nicely showcase their heavy vocal abilities: Rolo Tomassi - Rituals Obscure Sphinx - Lunar Caustic Oathbreaker - Needles in Your Skin Battle of Mice - Bones in the Water
I will check those out. As for your comment though, I respect your right to have an opinion 100% (regarding the style in which metal vocals are supposed to be delivered) but I completely disagree. Vocalist can (and SHOULD) have a vocal signature of their own, their own touch / unique way of approaching everything from their vocal techniques to the way in which they use those techniques to compliment the music they're on, but most metal genres are HEAVY (as they should be) in a way where a majority of those bands evoke more of a dark emotion / feel via many techniques (both rhythmic and melodic) - this calls for a deeper / darker / more powerful vocal tone. High-pitch / shallow vocals and screams, which are what most women (not all, of course) are going to more often deliver, don't mesh with the emotion most metal genre styles call for, in my opinion. FOR EXAMPLE, to take it out of the sphere of metal for a minute.. Reggae. Would a highly-talented female vocalist with an opera-style vocal work for a classic-style Reggae band? Reggae vocals are supposed to be delivered a certain way. Anyway, just my opinion. Good discussion lol
@@InsomniacReacts For me, as long as the vocal performance invokes emotion, it's a go. And it's difficult not to invoke emotion when you're screaming your heart out-screams are magical in that sense, we're evolutionally tuned to respond to them. You're certainly right that the key ingredient is the power/solid breath support behind the growl or scream, but as long as they're delivered in a convincing way, I think heavy vocals can do many things. Some can sound aggressive, while others are more scary or harrowing. All have a place in my heart lol.
Check out spiritboxs song holly roller with ryo.. that song hits so much harder then circle with me. I’m a huge spiritbox fan.. but if you’re sour on female vocalists for metal.. you need that song my dude
It's a live take so yes all is live guitar bass and drums if you check out any more of their one takes it shows their bands playing except for this video it just shows her
I want to be honest, even if we didn't think of Spiritbox, to say that only Tatiana from Jinger makes gutturals or includes that "essence" of metal, seems more like a lack on your part in knowing the genre than a reality. Just thinking that Jinger is a perfect representative already seems pretty daring to me, because Jinger is a good band and has amazing musicians, but it's also from the lighter side of metal, it's not Brutal Death Metal, it's not Doom Metal, it's not Deathcore, and therefore, their music is not so "heavy or brutal" no matter how hard they try, therefore the same happens with Tatiana's voice. And that is the issue, that is why Jinger is also as famous as Jinger and everyone asks for reactions from them, because their music is easier to listen to because it is not so heavy, myself when I want to listen to something light, calmer , I listen to them, but, if you wonder, are there women in the other subgenres? Yes, there are women who sing in Brutal Death Metal, in Doom, in Deathcore, in Black Metal and they are just amazing and really brutal, so no, Tatiana is not the only or the best to make a brutal sound. As for its gutturals, it is only the best known and most popular.
I agree that their sound is not all that heavy in the grand scheme of metal, but Tatiana herself does have one of the best guturals ever. But yeah, the dude has very limited knowledge if he thinks she’s the only woman who can do it, for sure.
just curious how old is that tele on the wall there that thing is sweet. i got a 76 firebird bicentential that was my dads. i love old guitars . and spiritbox is amazing. rules of nine is my favorite by them. courtney's vocal control is honestly insane she is super talented
Agreed! Digging Spiritbox. That Firebird sounds cool for sure. That Tele isn't as old as it looks - it was purchased new sometime after 2000 - it's a Fender factory relic edition, which I'm not usually a fan of (I like to let guitars age naturally), but that guitar has a very special sentimental value to it. It was my friend's guitar who was the singer in the last major band I was in, who sadly isn't with us anymore. Figured I'd honor his memory by making his guitar part of the videos on this new channel.
If you are looking for female metal vocalists to add to the list, check out Vintersea. Ideally the live "Slay at home" performance. Imo blows both Tatjana and Courtney out of the water.
You need to go down the spiritbox rabbit hole. You won't be disappointed. For me personally courtney is the greatest female metal vocalist of all time, no disrespect to Tatiana and the others. I just believe she is on a whole different level. Great reaction tho.
Female singers that does it for me with hars vocals are Tatiana, Courtney and Angela gossow from Arch Enemy. She is absolute beast! Check this out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nEUayPRyF-Y.html They have new singer now, who is great too, but just not on the same level in that setting. She was better suited for her in her old band The Agonist ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EdT7M4f2L9A.html (This is spectacular song too) Alissa White-Gluz All just my opinions ofc so no hate towards any one :)
You hit the nail on the head with the drums. Zev Rose, the drummer is playing a traditional acoustic kit. I guess they processed the hell out of the drum tracks due to the fact that they are only a 3 piece instrumental band (drums. guitar and bass). Zev Rose does have a live video of the drum track of this song. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BMK8fDPScaE.html
As a drummer of 25 years I agree the drums are over processed and a bit muddy. The playing is fine though. I hear it as a stylized choice but it's not for me. Other than that I do really enjoy this band as a whole and Court's vocals are top notch! PS nice Tele!
I watched that Lorna Shore one take. REALLY GLAD I didn't do a reaction on it - would have lost some subs lol. It was so bad on so many levels that I couldn't finish watching it.
@@InsomniacReacts most people I've seen in comments liked better than the original video. But everybody has their own taste I guess. It's definitely acquired taste lol.
I know you said you want newer stuff but if you want drums you gotta check out Chris Turner from Oceans Ate Alaska. He’s got some incredible play throughs. His videos of Escapist and 40 Roll are unbelievable
I've known of Arch Enemy for YEARS. Honestly can't stand them. So luckily I don't have to piss off a bunch of fans by not enjoying them at all on camera lol
VINTERSEA ! VINTERSEA ! VINTERSEA ! Check them out. Female metal vocalist. For tracks I'd reccomend Befallen or their live Slay at Home version of Fiery Tongue. I'm an absolute SUCKER for female leads in metal bands and I came across them recently. I promise you won't be disappointed !
Yeh...to analyse it all...She's not Tatiana,..and not Allissa also.... her wavering of voice differs between a calling of life answers and a soul cry within the same word!!..... thats the difference of ability!. Hale Spiritbox!!
Spiritbox is fantastic, but I don’t get the comparison to Jinjer. If it’s just about having a female vocalist who can do harsh vocals, there’s a million bands like that. Also, her name was in the title of the video, literally on screen when you were saying you needed to search for it =P”
Thanks for the suggestion Mike! I'll check the song out but I can't do a reaction to it - it's too old. Until this channel is much bigger / established, the only videos I'm going to get any views on are reactions to new music. Do me a favor though, keep an eye on them and let me know AS SOON AS they drop something new and I'll hop on it!
1st of all, its a long comment, im not a native so it might be quite hard to read xD. You cant go wrong with their songs. If you want smth heavier Holly Roller, Aphids, Silk in the Strings are probably the hevaiest, not clean vocals at all. I also recommend checking out the one take versions, if there is one ofc. For the next video you have to react to The Mara Effect Live at Silverside Sound, the best song ive ever heard. If you want to hear another female vocalist - Alissa White from Arch Enemy is a fucking beast as well. Some of my favs - War Eternal, a reason to believe, a fight I must win. She rarely does cleans in her curret band sadly. So you need to listen to her prev band The Agonist - Thank you pain, Panophobia to hear her range. Btw. I hate the fact that ppl are comparing her to Tati. They have completly diff styles. And Courtney is unarguably the best 💙
You're the second person to recommend The Mara Effect Live at Silverside Sound so I'll check it out for sure. Regarding Arch Enemy - I'm very sorry to say that I've tried to like them for MANY YEARS now and I just can't stand them lol. I don't like the vocalist OR the band very much, so I'm gonna skip them so I don't piss off their fans lol.
About half of their music is heavy, half is more like this, with moments of heavy, but overall more of a “mainstream” appeal to it. Courtney’s husband writes all the instrumentation, and plays guitar. The drums are all programmed, as are most drums nowadays.
Ah OK good to know. That's great because then I didn't insult a drummer lol. As a side note though, there are still plenty of metal bands that record live drums but they layer samples over the actual kit. Wasn't sure if this was that situation or not, so thanks for clearing that up.
