Great chat gentlemen. I remember checking out an instructional video by John Scofield decades ago where he was discussing the modes, playing over a static chord for each. He started playing over a C major chord just using diatonic notes and it sounded so hip, even “out” at times. He had a real command of all the triads, intervals, and shapes inherent in the humble major scale. 👍🏻
I like what Chris says about not being afraid to repeat yourself. If you find a new figure or shape or motif, however simple, just repeat the hell out of it for weeks. After a time it's just dug a groove in your brain and you can play it without thinking. Also, with the sheer repetition you start boring yourself, so you begin to develop variations just to stop yourself going crazy. Before you know it, you're playing interesting stuff.
Thanks for doing this. Please do some more. The story about the 19 year old playing major scales was great. The young learning from the old is a beautiful thing, but the old learning from the young is equally beautiful.
It is so special to have that one particular friend who mentally knows me better than I know me. My vibe player is a dude I have known since he was a ninth grader in school….i was his band director. We have been best friends since 1977. He is the only person on earth I can discuss music, life, etc. Special people…. Oh yeah.
Yo... your student teacher from your sophomore HS year here. You may remember me from such things as Jazz Band Listening Test Tape (which included Dave Douglas). Love this! You guys need to do this regularly! Seriously! I could see you catching the HS/college/post grad crowd that's looking for more. You guys already have a rhythm with each other. You're Miles Ahead of anyone in this genre. Go for it! Love ya, guys. - MB
