Shravan Patel was performing his first solo in an airplane at Denver’s Centennial Airport (APA) and had just completed his usual three and was doing a fourth in honor of a fallen friend, when he witnessed a Cirrus collide with a Keylime transport plane on final. In this incredible mid-air collision, miraculously no one was injured. The cirrus was able to deploy the CAPS (parachute) and the Keylime landed it like a boss. Meanwhile, Shravan completed a First Solo for the ages!

The day I soloed it was at an airport that did parachute jumping. Right before I took off on my solo, the DeHaviland took off full of jumpers. The jump landing zone was to the west of the runway. When I was on my first downwind, about to turn base, the jump pilot announced “Jumpers away!” When I turned final I looked up and the sky was full of parachutes. The wind had shifted aloft and blown them back over the airport. I did a full stop, taxied to the end of runway and waited for them all to land. Then I did my third circuit. When I picked up my instructor he was sweating bullets, he had tried to run from the edge of the ramp to the Unicom to tell me to stop.

Thank you for sharing your story. You were honoring your friend, and a miracle occurred! IMHOP, you have personality traits that are perfect for a pilot. Most of us have to work very hard at keeping calm during high stress situations, your instinctual reaction to high stress is phenomenal. I would fly with you as PIC anytime. Congratulations on your accomplishments so far, I know there are many more to come!

That first solo flight for Shravan will be a never forget moment. I was watching TV when Ruby shot Oswald. That is a will never forget moment. It will be the same for Shravan. I was impressed with his presence of mind but he knew what his mission was and he was able to adhere to that task and complete it with flying colors. We need pilots like Shravan.

I had an aircraft viewing of an earlier model Cirrus at an airfield just 15 mins from Centennial when this accident happened. Seeing "Denver SR22 crash" come up on the news knowing a pilot friend was out in Denver showing an SR22 for us on that day was absolutely terrifying. Incredible story

No way. This episode was excellent but the best one, hands down, is that guy that passed out due to CO intoxication and hours later the plane (I think it was a Mooney) run out of gas landed itself in a snowed field at night with the guy still unconscious. Now, bring the Key Lime pilot and we may have a new #1.

I have a friend who is a pilot. He introduced us to this channel . I love it! I have a huge fear in flying and when I flew with him knowing my fear, he made everything comfortable. Amazing pilot!!! I will say in the video had to pause during to understand your lingo. But either way I loved the episode. Keep at it! Let’s us know when you make it to to the Air Force! I’m invested. My husband is an Air Force veteran, not a pilot, but he is rooting for you!

I live about 3-4 miles roughly E-NE of Centennial and caught this on VASAvation before I caught the local news that evening, It nice to put a face to the voice, I've only witnessed a mid-air from the ground (RAF Fairford 1993 2 mig-29s). I remember I'd taken 6 or 7 photos of them going down before the reality struck. I also remember not having that much of reaction beyond the thought, well that was unexpected so I can totally understand the calm reaction to events, the human brian can be a resilent SOB under pressure.

Hi my friends, greetings from Argentina. So happy so see you back "In The Hangar" again!!! Welcome to those interesting and instructive episodes. A few episodes back, I suggested both of you to interview a young pilot, who´s family bought a Piper Seneca III in South Africa and made her fly all thru up the continent, crossed Europe, overflight the north atlantic ocean onto Canada, down to the US and finally delivered her in Texas to her owners all by a Vietnam veteran pilot. I think, if you can reach either the owners and/or the pilot, that would be an amazing story, even maybe for two episodes. I knew this story told by Juan Browne from the "Blancolirio" channel and the most stuning parts where: how cool this young student was and most of all the calmness of the Metro pilot. I only can imagine how shaky their knees were after they landed and looked to the almos ripped plane as well as the 2 guys who survived from the Cirrus. (thanks for the chute). My son had an engine failure on his first solo and put it down safely in a wheat crop , then in another aircraft he had an engine failure on his third solo and managed to put it down in a rocky paddock and avoided the rocks- the instructor said that it’s the first time that he had heard of a student having completed three solo flights but only landing on a runway once

The first failure was in the flight instructors aircraft and it was a cracked compression ring which resulted in terrible noises coming from the engine and a seized piston - it was very close to the airstrip but he was at too low altitude to land on the runway so into a wheat field next door - he did well not to stall - the second failure was in my aircraft- a brand new engine had just been installed and tested and on his second solo he just did circuits without any issues- with his third solo the instructor told him to have a bit of fun and fly further from the airport at a higher altitude- we didn’t know that during the installation of the new engine the metal fuel line was kinked where it goes through the firewall and only allowed limited fuel flow- enough for circuits as the climb was short and the fuel bowl held enough reserve by when my son started his extended climb the engine starved of fuel and cut out- where he put it down was a very rocky slope and he did very well to avoid the boulders

I was in the pattern as well during this (N683SP) and he handled the situation well. Luckily my instructor and I were able to confirm both occupants of the Cirrus were safely out and, on the ground, shortly after landing by parachute.

One Saturday in 1991 I drove over to the airport where I kept my airplane, Hyde Field in Maryland. I noted that there was not much traffic in the pattern. Then I realized there was NO traffic in the pattern, very odd for a Saturday with very nice weather. I started looking around to see what was going on. Turned out that a student pilot in a Cessna 152 on his first solo had gone off the Left side of the runway with what must have been full power on. He hit and destroyed an Ercoupe, smashed in the side of a Seabee so badly they finally just threw it away, and clipped the tail off a Meyers 200 that was being restored as well as hitting a boat that was parked there. The 152 ended up standing on its nose in the middle of all that wreckage. No one hurt except the guy who helped the pilot climb out and ended up with a little cut on his finger.

@@TakingOff The owner of the Meyers said he was uncomfortable with replacing the tail, given the performance capabilities of the aircraft, so I am sure he did not have it repaired. I have no idea what happened to it, but I did see them toss the Seabee fuselage in the woods one day.

My first solo, unbeknownst to either me or my instructor, was also the first time on the radio for a student controller. "Six Juliett Kilo, cleared touch and go runway 12, wind 110 at 15 gusting 30, break, Jamaica 023, line up and wait runway 12." As I watched the A300 start rolling forward then stamp on the brakes, I transmitted, "Um, Six Juliett Kilo, confirm cleared touch and go?" I got a cheery "Affirm!" so I touched and went. It was a different voice that told the A300 to line up and wait the second time...

5:15 Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. Any landing you can still fly the plane after without needing to undbend anything is adequate. Any landing where your passengers can't pinpoint the instant the plane touched the ground is a great landing.

With parallel runways and as much traffic at Centennial, there are few opportunities to use good wind management and make the turn to crosswind downwind so that the base to final turn will be upwind. Speed was a big factor in the midair. We need to teach takeoff fast and landing slow relative to each other. Unfortunately, just the opposite is taught. Good job just flying the airplane first and other stuff second.

Is there any chance that you guys might be able to interview Mathias Rust? He was the West German teenager who, in 1987 flew his Cessna 172 to Moscow (without permission) and landed near Red Square. It was kind of a big deal back then. I think later he got into more legal trouble, but I did see a more recent interview (in German). I'm betting he has some great stories.

30 hours to solo? I think I did it at around 6 hours....back in "82".

I did with exactly 7 hours July 68, 19 y/o... 1961 C150B The curriculums must have changed over the years. I have read online that the average hours for first solo is 15 fwtw. Or stated between 10 and 20 I got lucky that day with three of the smoothest landings that I ever made.

Hours before solo is entirely subjective- It’s different for different flight schools. If you fly out of a non-towered field in possum-fuck Arkansas you don’t need 20 to 30 hours you need more like 12. Centennial, however, is an aggressively busy airport AND it’s under Denver Class B. Personally at KAFF I didn’t solo until 20 hours. Honestly doing well on the written and well on the check-ride is way more of a flex.

I don't understand why you didn't do the Trevor Jacob method? All u have to do is hit the triangle button to exit the vehicle and proceed to parachute to safety. Make sure to bring a selfie stick and purchase a parachute from Ammo-Nation!

Wasn't there an episode of Friends where one of the friends was commenting on the beauty of on of the TV news anchors and one of the other friends said, "She's married." "How do you know?"
