Good job. I am a Cisco small business user and I use the RV340 router because I run a Cisco layer 3 switch for many years.

I used a RV325 for quite awhile at home and it was very nice. I accidentally bricked it (my fault) during a firmware update on a Sunday night at 7PM and had someone on the phone and a replacement unit on its way to my house within 20 minutes after a couple of troubleshooting tasks they had me perform. Overall I am a big fan of the Cisco Small business SG250/SG350 switches and the current RV line of routers. I've had 4 SG250-26P switches installed at our offices now for a couple of years and other than reboots for firmware updates they are never rebooted and do everything we need them too with no issues. I also have 2 of the SG250-26P switches and a SG350-28P switch at home and again no issues. I now have a couple of HP switches at my house as well (a 1950 and a 2930F) that I bought as I like to tinker and they have both been good so far except the Cisco and even EdgeSwitch interfaces are better. The 2930F is especially bad, however, it's more meant for CLI control from what I've been told rather than the GUI. I also have 3 Netgear GS510TP switches at home and they have been great as well except that the interface is from 1999 LOL. The VLAN configuration process is absolutely HORRIBLE in them compared to any of my other switches, however, it does work. I had to reboot my ES-16-XG the other day after 65 days of up-time because it decided to not pass traffic for some reason over a single LAG after I rebooted the remote switch. Every other LAG was fine except for one of them. Rebooting the EdgeSwitch fixed it...no idea why but it's never had a problem until then.

VPN throughput depend on the confirgured ciphers. That AES-CBC 128-SHA1 you use in phase 2 is only single threated and most likely slower in throughput. Try AES-GCM-256 if your Cisco and other FW offers that cipher. You might need to enable IKEv2 as well. And can you confirm that your other firewall is not bottlenecking the VPN? Good job so far.

Had a RV320 in production at a customers site. One day when looking through the logs I found that the whole config had been dumped in plain text as part of an attack vector. Cisco had a new version of firmware that addressed this but it had only been out about 2 weeks and had already had the config dumped 4-5 times. This included admin, VPN, DYNDNS and Gmail account credentials. Needless to say it's now in the truck as a temporary hot-swap router and where not buying any Cisco RV series routers.

VPN setup vid pls!!... Great review of this product. I’ve been a massive Cisco fan since their SOHO units. Cisco routers & Switches are absolutely fine. You don’t have to get their licenses. Some of their earlier models are very predatory though in regards to what services they should be providing out of the box, but require license instead. You just have to do your research before purchasing. But it seems that the market has taught this company some very important lessons as is evident with their new models.

My best experiences with cisco where late 90's early 2k. After I got my certs their policy changes in part due to the desire to compete with lower end hardware and get into the SMB market. Really meant that it was impossible. I let my certs go and never looked back. I generally avoid cisco these days. for the same reasons your talking about. Not to mention the cost of ownership and support has been consistently through the roof. Which is unacceptable for the clients I work with. Which are generally extremely small to medium sized businesses.
@vijgai3

The umbrella product is constantly changing with new features added. They are working on a full blown proxy plus cloud hosted firewall. The integration with Meraki wireless access points is awesome as well. Talos intelligence and AMP Threatgrid is great. Plus ability to store access logs in AWS S3 bucket and get those into our SIEM. However, unlike Cisco TAC, the support for Umbrella is absolutely rubbish. There is no phone number. You log the ticket online and wait. There is no option to select a severity or to escalate. Response is very slow. I only log tickets as a last resort.

Nice looking product... but I lost my love and trust for the RV line after the two big issues with the RV320 & 325 CVE-2019-1653 - allows a remote attacker to get sensitive device configuration details without a password. CVE-2019-1652 - allows a remote attacker to inject and run admin commands on the device without a password. Best part is how long it took for a true fix

I think the password quirk is caused as a result of the 'password aging time' setting which is set default to 180 days. If unpack, connect and powerup the router for the first time, my bet is that at the moment you setup the password for the first time, the internal clock is not set to current yet, so the internal clock is set far in the past. Next time you login when the time is set to current, the router 'thinks' it's over 180 days later :-).

3:01 you can't threaten people with that, it doesn't make sense that a warranty won't be given if you don't buy it from an official supplier. In Australia, this is illegal, you have to provide a warranty for a product and it has to be reasonable, which is written into law. So if someone sells you a Cisco router, it automatically has a 'statutory warranty' based on the price and type of product which overrides any warranty they might list even on the product page, and the retailer must honour that warranty.

We purchased 2 of these units and they are full of bugs and can't handle more than about 25 users. To many features and not enough CPU and memory. The licencing blows it self out every couple of weeks and I have to re-licence them and then reconfigure the security features. The units must be re-started daily or the GUI interface goes out to lunch and will not allow you to login. Only way to get back in is to flip the power switch to recover. Cisco just released a new firmware version that I hope will improve the performance and licencing issues. Not worthy of the Cisco name!

Put a Cisco RV VPN router in a small business. Piece of junk. Not sure why it needed rebooting every second day, but I think it had something to do with the DNS cache overflowing. Replaced it with an Edgerouter, no issue since. Even the SG200-18 Cisco switch is weird, many steps to upgrade firmware and now takes about 6 minutes to cold boot. Stay well away from their SMB range - it's just Linksys junk with a prettier face.

why the router is called firewall all the time ?
@alijabein2444
@alijabein2444 3 года назад
because some routers can have configuration features of a firewall. physically, a device can be either a switch, a router, a firewall, or any combination of the 3, it all depends on the embedded software in the unit

The old RV stuff was hot garbage. It had the Cisco badge, but constantly received far less attention than any of the full grade cisco products. I hope they've adjusted this with the new products.

The VPN is frankly no use without Anyconnect Client Licence package as you will go insane trying to configure L2TP/IPsec or IPsec Client-to-Site tunnels on windows. IPsec Works ok with Mac/iOS inbuilt cisco IPsec client but good luck getting any other platform connecting with jumping through some hoops.

Definitely not a Cisco fan! Cisco are only interested in you if you are an enterprise customer, which many of your subscribers are not. We tend to look after SMB clients, hence choosing Unifi as the central management makes life so much easier. The only way you'll get that with Cisco, is to go for Meraki, which brings back their stupid enterprise licensing model. Like the idea suggested by Penwell Dlaminii of looking at Microtik though.
@wiziek
@wiziek 4 года назад
Meraki is bit different then "proper" Cisco so devices which runs on IOS, not this SMB stuff like RV router or SG switches. With normal Cisco yea you get smartnet but after this license your devices still work. Regarding Meraki, after you stop paying your devices just become unusable.
@WX51
@WX51 4 года назад
@@wiziek I ended up throwing away some perfectly good Meraki WiFi AP's that I wasn't prepared to pay the licensing fee for. Literally they didn't want them back (I was attending a trade show and took them with me so Meraki could recycle them), but they just weren't interested in them, so I ended up dumping them in the local council's electrical waste bin. Best place for them if you ask me. Just shows you what value Cisco puts on their stuff when they tell you they don't want it back.

Actually, did you have a chance to look at Cisco's FindIT solution? I found it very useful for managing cisco's smb products. What is better, it also allowed me to discover and partially manage non-cisco devices. Worth looking.
@asclepi

I mean if they're not interested in SMB then why do they regularly keep releasing new models (routers, switches and AP's) in their SMB product lines? If you mean support, then yes, you're right. But Ubiquiti doesn't offer SMB support either. Although it is not as sleek as Unifi, there is a centralized management feature available as pointed out by MYR PRJ.

cisco support is to notch I have used it being in an it company and no other networking equipment manufacture compares to it. It is why you pay a premium for cisco. Where I work we push the meraki equipment though yes it is $80 a year for the licence and if yo don't pay it stops working but think of it as a warranty as they are under warranty as long as they are licanced and they will replace the equipment when it dies even if it is 15 or 20 years old.
