This special event celebrated the official opening of the Pritzker Military Museum & Library’s Coleman T. Holt Oral History Room, the new home of the Stories of Service Oral History program. This room is dedicated to the memory of Coleman T. Holt. First Lieutenant Holt served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Many of the interviews captured by the Library are available on our website and as audio podcasts through iTunes. The Holt Oral History Room is equipped with state-of-the-art audio visual equipment, allows the Library to produce the highest quality recordings of the men and women who generously share their stories with us.
The Stories of Service program is successful thanks to the generous support of Karen Pritzker and Michael Vlock with additional support from Colette Holt and Kay Smith. Collaborative organizational partners have included the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, Free Spirit Media, American Folk Life Center, DuSable Museum and the Mission Continues.
The program focused on the role of the Tuskegee Airmen and featured Tuskegee Airman O. Lawton Wilkerson and Dr. Daniel L. Haulman, Chief, Organizational Histories Branch, Air Force Historical Research and moderator Robert Jordan from WGN-TV News.

Bravo! Excellent! Fifty years ago I went through Army military helicopter flight school and my roommate was from south Chicago and was black. He was the first one in his family to finish high school and he constantly shined in flight school. When the rest of us got demerits at inspections, Oscar would get merits! He was an excellent pilot and flew guns in Vietnam and, sadly, got killed on his last flying day in Country. War is hell! Thanks so much for the video as you have remembered heroes.

The fact that the elder gentleman is still affected by the discrimination that he experienced chokes me up. He still gets emotional after all of these years. Smh

So real! I served in the Air Force on active duty as an aircraft mechanic. I was part of the 332nd Air Expeditionary Forces in Kuwait and met some of our finest Tuskegee Airmen then. Our history was sealed by them and they are America's finest 🇺🇸. Our society owes them a great deal of gratitude which they didn't receive then, but history does not forget them and it does not forget those who held them back. If it wasn't for them, I would have never served with a black or female Commander in the 2000's. Marginalizing people in civilian world took a back seat to survival of our military professionals. Since this program, our military has been two steps ahead of the society they serve, and proves that marginalized people only does more harm. Thank you for this educational experience.

Well done. The two guests did much to enhance my understanding of the history of the Tuskegee Airmen. This should be shown in schools at least every Black History Month.

Excellent presentation. Being white and growing up in segregated Miami, I recall the buses being segregated and recall a incident of a black man being arrested for sitting in the front of the bus and refusing to relocate to the back of the bus. I also remember segregated schools, neighborhoods, restaurants, rest rooms, and even an amusement park which was only opened for blacks on Wednesdays. We have come a long way from back then but still have a long way to go to finally find equality.

I have read in a novel of m.m.kaye that discrimination is common to all races, being a matter of predjudice that goes deeper than reason ,shes right.

i love history stories. this documentary and movie gave me such admiration to the red tail pilots even discriminated vehemently yet with honor and pride save and serve with their whole heart during world war II. just so sad up to this present that the black community is still treated the same way back then... though not all. thank you very much sir about the Tuskegee pilots.

Imagine if they had been allowed to fly sooner...millions would have been saved :( Racism/segregation does more than just discriminate.
