I've done this very job. I only needed to replace the return hose which is prone to chafing and eventually leaks. Citroen do an uprated hose to prevent a repeat performance. It cost me about £60 from the dealer and I had to top up the EGS fluid (£40 for a litre from the dealer. Fiat who developed the EGS transmission actuator sell the same fluid for less). I documented the repair on my own channel and it is one of my more popular C4GP videos. EDIT: I didn't need to remove the battery when I replaced the return hose. The system self bleeds so a top-up might have to be done.

Is this something that a novice can do or not? This is the second leaking hose I've had on this car. I had a new hose and tank fitted 2 years ago and it's leaking again. Cost me £550 in all last time and I'd like to avoid a repeat of that.

@@StandardGoose Citroen brought out an uprated hose to prevent chafing which is the most common cause of actuator fluid leaks. I'm surprised your's has failed again so soon. Maybe it wasn't fitted properly. I've already replied to the comment you made on my video.

Nice video! Thanks. What would please the reason of changing the hose with the tank? The old hose cannot be removed in reattached?

Hi. Before you fix the leak dis you had any problems whit shifting or does it say on your dash gearbox needs repair, and everytime you pit it on Auto “A” it will go back to “N” ?

Yes, it had all those symptoms for a while and then stopped shifting altogether. The diagnosis is easy to make: you just check the fluid level (need to remove some wheel well covers first) and if the tank is empty and there is oil all over the place, this is the most likely root cause.

This week my grand Picasso 2012 gtr+ is losing oil from gear box. I feel as if it’s the same problem with that pipe leaking. I removed the battery and all the batter casing/plate underneath battery and found the plug hole to top up the gearbox oil. I topped it up to then realise it’s leaking which led me to your video. Is the plug hole under the batter fill up the same tank that you filled under the arch?

They’re separate tanks, one’s for the gearbox oil and one’s for the actuator oil

You don't. Not needed for this system. As far as I know.

Hello, I have a cetarwen c4 picaso. Do I need to change the gearbox oil, knowing that it is written in the maintenance book that it does not change, but if I replace it is it better for the gearbox or it gets worse?

no oil for lifetime , just make sure you use the right oil

Hi, 6:13 - What type of fluid did you use to fill the acctuator tank? Are there any recommended change intervalls or is it a "lifetime" fluid, good till the Citroen warranty runs out :D cheers

I think someone answers the fluid type question under some comments in this htread. I no longer have the (empty) bottle so cannot check. I encourage you to go to dealer to make sure you get the right type. I don't think you'll need to change the oil before it starts leaking and you need a new tube as well.

@@inresinnesvilja9739 thx for the reply I found the following specs online: 75w80 API GL4 cheap & easy to come by. i will service it in 1.5 years when the belts and water pump are due! (2012 DS4, Low km)

Hello there, I just want to ask you what kind of fault did you have with the gearbox so you had to replace those parts, I own citroen c4 2011 i guess with the same robotized gearbox and It shows gearbox faulty message, turns off the automatic gear switching and can not switch over third gear. Do you know what should I look up for? Thanks

In my case, the gearbox just stopped switching gears, staying in neutral. It did not limit which gears it used, like in your case.

I have the same problem, not changing over third gear unless you put in neutral and then in A again. No A function whatsoever bit same like in M. Any solutions?

Just to confirm; it looks like you filled it up initially then topped it up again after starting the engine and letting some fluid be drawn into the system. Is that right?

@@inresinnesvilja9739 Thanks. I did the same and there was a bit of leakage from the top of the tank when fluid from the system tried to return to the tank. So maybe I overfilled it a bit. But that stopped after a day or two once the excess had leaked away. It's all settled down now and I've had no problems with gear changes since.

Hi I have citroen c4 grand picasso 2008 semiautomatic, I started to have a gear box fault that appeared on the screen which was intermittent and during which the screen does not reflect the gear selector.. Now it became permanent and I can't start the car. The computer show the fault as P1417, gear selector. I had been told it may be gear Ecu.. What do you think and can you help with that?

I've got a very very tiny leak, and would like to just top up the fluid without removing the existing tank as a temporary stopgap until I can do a proper replacement. Can this be done via the wheelarch lining without dismantling the air filter and battery housing? It looks like you were able to.

Take the passenger wheel and plastic arch lining off. Then you will see the fluid reservoir with cap on top. Fill up with a funnel to the top. Fill with LHM hydraulic fluid. Leave lining off until more permanent repair is done so you can monitor how much fluid is there. Most likely high pressure pipe has become frayed.

@@seangeraghty86 Thanks. I'm not certain that there definitely is a leak. The pipe and tank were replaced 15 months ago, when there was a serious leak leading to the actuator servo overheating. I've seen no sign of fluid leakage on the road (when they replaced the pipe last time I asked them to remove the drip pan underneath, so that any future leak would be obvious). Recently it's dropped out of automatic mode into manual mode a couple of times, which is exactly what happened when there was a leak previously. However it's only done it intermittently and hasn't done it in about a month. I suspect they didn't fill it up fully, and that's exacerbated by the fact that I park on a steep hill . I'll find out when I get underneath and have a look at the tank.

So when all was put back together you did not to pressurize the system via diognostics socket and computer like suggested on C4 owner site

Not sure why I should have done that? It is a mechanical (hydraulic) system and everything has worked perfectly since then. If you have a link that site, please add it here!

@@inresinnesvilja9739 if your system was leaking then there is no need to depressurize but when fixed according to the French car owners forum the system has to be pressurize with diognostics software,I have been searching on line for the last few days as I want to change the oil in the system in my wife's car"it has no leak I just want to change it and the guys on the forum say it has to be done this way,but now I have watched your video and it seems it's not the case and the system does it itself

@@philipkeogh748 Ok, I am not much of an expert in this, but I did quite some research before attempting this myself and this is the first time I hear about that operation (pressurizing). There are some parts (like EGR) which you need to calibrate or "fit" electronically, which make it difficult for a home mechanic, so it is quite believable that there is a process for that and I just haven't heard about that. I have some experience from Citroëns hydraulic suspension and it was quite straightforward, just make sure the pump runs and nothing leaks too much. This makes me think all hydraulics is simple but I could be wrong. For me it worked though.

Just wondering mate is your car still ok if you still have it,I had to pull the gearbox out if my wife's car today as the release bearing has failed so will have to fit a new one and fill system with fluid

Hi mate good video. I bought Citroen c4 Picasso semi auto. I want to change actuator fluid like you. I think myone is the same like you, the difference is that my air filter is not there, good for me. But One question, what Liquid you use it to fill the system??? Can i use ATF oil for automatic* gearbox, which i have from my other car ( have few litres left. :)) Thanks.

This is specific fluid for the actuator, not the same fluid as transmission oil!

@@ivanpetrov2280 Sorry I do not have the code or type available any more. I got it from the Citroën dealer to to be sure I use the right fluid, but there is actuator oil at any major car parts retail stores. This is not the same as automatic transmission oil or gearbox oil.

Suc the old oil off with an pump with the same system like motor oil is suced. You do not get out all the oil but most part of it and fill it to max and after some 10 000 km change again. On side of oil cap there is an small hole to use sucing.

£10.50 for the same fluid from Ravenol. They say it meets the same standard as the OEM fluid. I've used it without issue.
