What a pain those keypads were, what a nightmare (when it comes to fixing) electronic control systems are, normally spells death to most normal cars

As a Autolocksmith I as others can read the pin code from the EPROM chip on the PCB. Used to many of these years ago.

I was laughing in happiness so much when you got the correct numbers, that my cat woke up and gave me a look as if to say "What's wrong NOW, you crazy human?" 😂😂 Twenty years ago I had a 1996 Peugeot 306 SLDT, and it's keypad was the same. I bought it cheap because the owner had forgotten the keycode, and also he thought the turbo had gone. I used the same trick as you to get the code (7648) and it turned out that the thick rubber driver's mat was wedged behind the accelerator. Turbo was fine. That was one heck of a cheap and lucky car. 😅

The end was so funny! Legend.

On my Xantia the code was so worn into the keypad that it was obvious to even a small child what the code was. I took it out while the engine was running and fitted a tray for stuff instead.

Looking at the wear to the carbon contacts on the keypad, that's actually a very clever way of hacking the code, obviously not something a car thief would do in-situ, but for someone restoring a car with such a system as you are doing, that's a cool way to deal with it... :D Only trouble now is, we all know the code, so, I hope there's a way to change it... :S

Once you get the right pin in and the engine running. Disconnect the plug on the keypad while the engine is running. Then leave it disconnected. And you will no longer have to enter the pin to make the engine start. Unless you connect the pin pad back to the car. Then the process will start again.

My dad's 406 had a pull down keypad and it annoyed him having to dial his personal code everytime he drove it

now this is very impressive work :)

The code is stored in the ECU not the keypad. So it is easy to shift keypads between cars when they are worn (as I have done) but the code will be the same. I am not sure the keypad had been changed in this car. Maybe just the plastic clip thing? The keypad looks like an early model. I have an 98 XM Tct and the buttons are different on the keypad. More rounded there ones are ”square”.
