Embark on a journey to the heart of a floating city at sea with this full documentary about life inside the world's largest US Navy aircraft carrier. Experience the thrill of life onboard as we take you behind the scenes of this massive military machine. Get a glimpse into the daily routines and challenges faced by the sailors who call this moving metropolis their home. Discover the cutting-edge technology and sophisticated systems that keep this massive vessel afloat and operating at maximum efficiency. Join us for a journey of a lifetime as we explore life inside a city at sea.
Hop aboard the U.S. Navy's mightiest aircraft carriers and meet their dedicated crews and pilots. On a U.S. Navy warship, up to 6,000 US sailors can live and work in the middle of the sea. This is how the modern aircraft carrier is also referred to as a ''city at sea.'' Many luxury facilities are available while the sailors work together to defend America's interests around the world. Full Documentary.
Life aboard an aircraft carrier is undoubtedly tough and exhausting. Sailors on an aircraft carrier are responsible for a wide range of tasks, and they often work long hours in challenging conditions.
Another challenge is the limited space and privacy available on an aircraft carrier. The ship is crowded with personnel and equipment, and sailors may have to share small, cramped living quarters with several other people. There is also limited downtime and opportunities for leisure activities, as the ship is always on the move and sailors are often busy with their duties.
Additionally, sailors on an aircraft carrier may face challenges related to being away from home and their loved ones for extended periods of time. Deployments can last for several months, and sailors may not have regular opportunities to communicate with their families or take leave.
Yet it can also be exhilarating, especially for the men and women who work on the flight deck, piloting jets and landing on a stretch of runway. What is it like to live and work on a US Navy ship in the middle of the sea?

In 1953, the FDR carrier came to Beirut Lebanon. My Uncle Mike was crew on that magnificent ship. As a young student, along with my folks we got to take a cruise for a day and watch what went on aboard, and it was fascinating. Not the same as it is today, but nonetheless impressive. We watched old prop powered war planes launched and recovered, and got to eat with the crew and tour most of the ship. One of the hi-lights of the day was an exhibition Basketball match between the Ship's Navy Team and the world renowned Harlem Globetrotters. That was a day in my life I will never forget.

After retiring, he and Mom, with my brother helping when not at school or work, built 2 experimental aircraft, a Long-Eze, then a Glasair 2RG. If you don’t have anything worth while to bring to the conversation that don’t involve yourself - or if you don’t have nothing nice to say don’t say nothing. He just kept rotating betwween P-3C squadrons which are considered sea duty because we go on 6 month deployments and shore duty - he was an AOCM (NAC).

This video only really focused on the topside life and totally ignored how everything about how the carrier life works. Stop focusing on videos like this that only show one perspective. In reality, the ones pulling the weight are not the ones on the video. Ask how electricity is carried around these ships, ask how the water (the number one ingredient and necessity) is made, ask how the steam is made, ask how the ship moves, ask how the jets are able to fly off the ship. Ask how the cattapults are able to go back and forth, etc... it's not magic, it's those below working on a 24/7 schedule. Not "days and nights" like everyone else on the ship. Those who work 18-20 hours straight in the propulsion plant, go out to eat, study because of the constant demand, shower and jump in bed for an hour or so before going back down, spending not days but weeks without seing the sun, missing sunday events, missing flydeck events, missing out on FOOD, missing out in celebrations, etc. The credit for every single jet flying out, or everytime you drink or eat, or everytime you go and take a shower, is thanks to the reactor department ensuring that everything is running properly. Those in Mechanical, Control, Propulsion, Electrical, Auxiliary, Dose and Training, those who you rarely see, those are the ones running this beast of a ship. From knowing how it is to live in this style for 9 months on single deployments and living/working next to my fellow brothers I can tell you, there is way more than what these videos in YT tells you, but not a single one gives credit where credit is due.

That's all true but this video would be at least an hour and i guess this subscriber didnt want to "go deep" into Navy life. I was a airedale in the Gator Navy, a whole lot of Marines but we still had to stand watches and do everything you described in your comments. A couple of times i had to do box lunches because the flight deck needed all their personnel, water hours, taking 2 min showers. We didnt have steam cats, mainly helicopters and Harriers. I did 2 6 month deployments(Westpacs) so i know how you feel.

From a Seaman Recruit to Seaman as a Boatswain Mate for a year transfer to 3rd Class Petty Officer to a 2nd Class Petty Officer Data Processor Technician. I did get on several Carriers as a guess during my active duty and during my reserve time for work that needed to be completed. My twilight tour was returning to Indy for the second time in Japan, and my last time to see her would be Banger, Washington in her mothball stage. This film is true with more that I didn't have in my time as active duty. Thanks for the old memories

My thing is now that IM 50 in 2023. I wish I could have had the Discipline these sailors have. Unlike myself in 1992. When I served on the USS HOIST ARS 40 as a Culinary Specialist. My other shipmates who had been experienced to the NAVY before they were stationed on the HOIST, would tell me,"This ship ain't the REAL NAVY". Because "she" wasnt a combat vessel. And when we went overseas, we DIDN'T deploy with a FLEET. We traveled SOLO, in VERY ROUGH SEAS at times. And our ship was only 212ft long. As opposed to a aircraft carrier. What ALWAYS "GETS" me is the SIZE and SCALE of very large ships that I NEVER SERVED or stepped on to. And back in 1992 women could serve on combat ships. So that's why I chose to be stationed on a non combat ships. And I was scared of the potential of combat. And I DIDN'T LIKE THE FACT,that no WOMEN , could be AROUND, just to see later, ITS PLENTY OF FEMALES ON all ships.

From Thomas Courts USS Wasp CVA 18. This is light years away from my 4 years 52 to 56. In engineering I could still go anywhere including the flight deck during launches. With no AC I could sleep in a gas station under the flight deck. I was also required to spend 3 mouths assisting the cooks. During swim call we always had a boat in the water looking for sharks.

Things not mentioned about carrier life. Enlisted PICK up Officers laundry, washes and dries it, then FOLDS it and brings it back to their private stateroom. Enlisted sign up on a sheet, sometimes a month in advance for one time slot. Traversing through two straights 3 weeks a part, ended up cancelling my slot twice. Try going month + with no clean clothes. Enlisted meals were the worst quality food I’ve ever had. I’ve had villages in the jungle of Philippines feed me better on a 2 month field op then a ships galley of undercooked meat, rat in the mixer, etc. Officers have meals custom made. I would trade my supervisor watch officer for a quesadilla if I did a weeks’ worth of briefs because I was so hungry. MWR schedules port call hotels and events, you’d think they’d allow lowest rank to highest to sign up first (since lower enlisted could only afford cheaper hotels/events). Nope, MWR allows officers to go first, lower enlisted went last and often couldn’t afford the remaining rooms or event slows. Port calls - Officers got off the ship first, then senior enlisted, finally lower enlisted after waiting 8 hours on first port call day. Often, military order states officers and senior enlisted eat last, you’d think this would be the same when enjoying other quality of life events. Not when it comes to port calls. Staying overnight in a port call - Your CO would often only approve x amount of lower enlisted packages to stay off the ship, where every single officers was approved. They’d often fly family in for special holidays while deployed while lower enlisted stayed, slept, and ate on the boat during watch. Sleeping quarters are night and day. Officers often had four or less to a state room the size of a normal hotel room where enlisted slept 80 dudes to a birthing. Officers had private bathrooms with more toilets and showers compared to the 80 man birthing bathroom/shower area. Moral of the story. This video doesn’t show half of the entire story, the amount of disrespect sailors/marines, and I, received from officers onboard, and the lack of quality of life assets that officers receives.
