City Bus Stuck At RR Crossing, Cops Called, Broken Down Train Blocks Crossing For Hours, CSX & NS

Broken down train blocks a major 4 track railroad crossing and a metro bus gets trapped between the railroad crossing and cars backed up behind it. Cincinnati Police Department was called. The CSX train with a DPU was too long for the 2 locomotives. An ambulance had to turn around. Crossings were blocked for hours until a rescue locomotive tied onto the single leading locomotive. The city bus couldn't move because cars were behind it. Most cars were turning around but about 5 cars just sat behind the bus and a bus supervisor had to come out and ask the cars to turn around and then he helped the bus turn around. I got most of it on camera except for the ambulance. The stalled train only had one engine on the front and a mid train DPU and was way too long thanks to Precision Scheduled Railroading ( PSR ). Part of the train was carrying interesting looking maintenance of way ( MOW ) equipment. Notice the first train that passed it with 6 locomotives, 3 of which were Canadian Pacific Railway. Another cool thing about this video is the Norfolk Southern train that passed the CSX train. You can see the train knock down the signal ( change the signal from green to red ). That is always cool son. That train also had a DPU on the rear. Filmed in Elmwood Place and Carthage in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 20, 2021. Thanks for watching! I really appreciate your support! My wife drives the city bus. When this happens(which is quiet often in Elmwood) the must call the supervisor. The supervisor must come out to assist in back up and clearing traffic. SORTA prohibits them from backing up in these situations without a supervisor on site.

And they prohibit it because buses don’t have much in the way of rear visibility, so you really need someone to direct the operator from outside the bus. It’s not a judgement on the operator’s skill.

If you see a problem at a train crossing - DO NOT CALL 911. Call the 800 number posted on a BLUE SIGN at every train crossing - this is a direct link to train dispatching so any oncoming trains can be halted ASAP.

So walk over to the sign and Dial the#, the sign will have The location and crossing grade on it, just read off the Code # so the dispatcher will know where the problem Is at. If you just give the street it will take longer.

We had a csx that blocked 6 major intersections for 3 hours. Bus supervisors knew it was not going to move so they backed the busses around around. Csx brought out another engine and pulled out of crossings. Reason engines stopped was locomotive engineers reached maximum hours on duty and had informed dispatchers would not have enough time to make Taft yard

That stalled train really caused a problem. Someone at the CSX Power Desk must have been in trouble for the stalled train. That Norfolk Southern train certainly had enough power on it. There were three Norfolk Southern and three Canadian Pacific on the point of that train. Once CSX got that additional engine on the front of the train, they were finally ablr to move it. Thank you for documenting these to trains and for sticking around until the train finally took off.

@@beeble2003 As I read Jaw Tooth's description, he said "The CSX train with a DPU was too long for the 2 locomotives." I made the assumption that the train had stalled becasue there was not enough power to more the "too long" train. I did not pay attention to the sound of the SD40-3 when the train finally past where Jaw Tooth was standing. If the SD40-3 was not running, then the reason for the train stopping was a mechanical problem and not the fact that there was not enough engines on the train to move it.
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 2 года назад
@@thomasmackowiak Hmm. Strange that the description says both that it was broken down and that the two locomotives couldn't move it. I'm pretty sure the issue was just the breakdown. Unless maybe he means that there used to be two locomotives on the head plus the DPU in the middle, and the lead locomotive had already been removed by the time JT got to the front of the train. That might explain the unusual situation of having a solo lead locomotive running long-hood-forward.

@@beeble2003 I suspect you're right, I didn't hear anything from the '40. The step lights were on but I don't think you need to have the prime mover running for those. Loosing half of your tractive effort due to a crapped out locomotive will put a crimp in your day every time.

Hey Jaw. Hey everybody. This reminds me a lot of a train that derailed its leading diesel several years ago in downtown West Green Bay on Wednesday evening during the Summer Farmers Market. It was Canadian National, Northbound and arriving just after 5:00 pmcd. It was rolling north just fine at 10 mph. SUDDENLY it stopped. It blocked both major roads of Dousman Street and Walnut. And a lot of people were climbing over the couplers and ladders to get to their cars. In fact by Dousman I was talking to a policeman and talking about the airbrakes when a young man climbed over the couplers right in front of us. The white young man had a raffa knit hat that was very colorful. The policeman called him over and gave him a good lecture. Meanwhile down the train other people were also climbing over. But others were climbing under the couplers. We were telling many others to just walk South and cross behind the train along Pearl St. Then I also walked South to the end. But there were NO RAILROADERS to protect the reverse move. Suddenly I heard the airbrakes activate. And tried to get at the back. But the train was reversing. Luckily no one was underneath. FINALLY!!! After 2 and 1/2 HOURS, the train started North again. Thus it was a huge relief to get the crossings cleared. Just in time for the street market to close down. And let the people go home. THANK GOD...AMEN!!!!! 😊 🙏. 12-2-21. (P.S. HEY. THE DATE NUMBER COMES OUT RATHER EVENLY, SEE!!) LOL!!!!!

I'll take a stab at this. First, the train is in a yard, which one can see after the bus moving portion. Next, he's inside the yard limit board [yellow forked tongue] so the yardmaster is in charge. A single engine is dispatched to the head end, which makes me think there was trouble with the lead engine and the GP certainly did not have the power to move the train on its own. It was also pointed the wrong way thus a trailer lash-up. Whether the engine was the same engine on the head end or a replacement, it all takes time. And, of course, Karen had to call the cops. There's not much the cops can do when a train is having some sort of trouble. Maybe those folks will have to construct an overpass. Even with the train moving and carrying the whole nine yards, the crossing was still blocked for a long time while it moved out of the yard and on its way. PSR: Please Sit back and Relax because the length of the train means you can take a nap, have a V-8, or catch up on your reading.

What a lot of people dont realize is Trains have jurisdiction over everything. Cities have to have permission for roads to cross railroad tracks. Cities have to imform any repairs of the road 250 feet from the closest rail. Its all due to the railroad being there first. So the cops cant anything about blocking traffic from a train.
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 2 года назад
@@troy3052 I'm pretty sure that's not correct. For a start, the idea that the trains were there first is simply not true in many places. There were no commercial railways in the US before 1827, but there were plenty of towns there before that, and plenty of people there before there were towns. Second, it doesn't matter who was there first. I don't have any special rights over the people in the apartment above mine just because I've lived here longer; the railroad doesn't have any special rights over everybody else just because it's had its tracks there longer than the road. To take things to a ludicrous extreme, CSX doesn't have the right to park a rail car on every grade crossing and close all the roads. Many cities have ordinances forbidding trains from blocking crossings for more than a certain amount of time. The cops can't literally do anything because they can't move the train themselves. But the railroad can be prosecuted and fined. Cities only require permission to build a road across the railroad because the railroad is private land. If they wanted to build a road across your garden, they'd need your permission, too.
@AndreiTupolev

So people shouldn't make such a fuss and just adjust their lives to revolve around what's convenient for the railroad company? If the railroad companies want public support some consideration on their part might be a good PR move

I live in Detroit, Michigan. When, it comes to railroad crossings there is a 5 minute time limit for trains to block any streets or roads inside the Detroit City Limits. Over the 5 minute limit the railroad company could be fined for blocking any streets or roads. For the Detroit City Busses, when the city bus 🚌should get stuck at a railroad crossing 🛤, the bus drivers usually can take a detour, just to get around the blocked crossing. This has happened in the Detroit City Limits numerous of times ⏲️along City 🚌Routes.

Another AWESOME video Good catch We have the same problem Here in Kalamazoo The freight trains. Come from the east And curves to the south So the train is moving slowly Or some times stops A main street is blocked Sometimes 40 minutes The city's solution was to place a Caution signal On the side Street before the main crossing So when the tracks are being used or blocked Supposed to take the detour You go a mile or two. Then swing back to the main street The city decided to go this route Because building an over pass Would have been to expensive

Makes me wonder- even if the train is under-powered, they could cut the cars at the crossing and use the DPU to pull them apart, at least enough for a vehicle or two to get through.
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 2 года назад
The train wasn't "under-powered". One of the locomotives broke down. Multiple crossings were blocked, so it's not clear that the DPU would have had enough power to shift enough of the train to unblock them all.

Blocked crossing! They’re seeing Red in Cincinnati. That was quite a lashup on the NB freight. Foreign power, SD40-2s, DPU. There were two DPUs on the two freights. Norfie has a beautiful coat. Fine video, son!
@JasonHalversonjaydog
@JasonHalversonjaydog 2 года назад
there's a city law here that says the trains can't block a crossing for more than 10 minutes straight. but the train company ignores it a lot, they got plenty of money, they just pay the fines if somebody reports them or a cop sees it (i've talked to train employees before)

There was some stuff going on in this video! That first train that came through was a monster and so was the stalled train. That thing had several streets blocked along its length. It messed up traffic flow in that entire area. Norfie sure is getting big. You can hear her purring. She's got a little chain saw motor going in there.

Precision railroading isn't so precise when there isn't enough horsepower for whatever reason(s).They seem to have a bottleneck coming into Queensgate from the north.The railroads need to up their game and not cause so many problems for motorists.It's not easy for me to say these things being a rail fan. BTW ,that first train with all those locomotives with three of them from the North Country was a nice catch. Thanks for cool video.

Precision railroading should, in my opinion, take into account coming to a stop on the steepest gradient in the route and having to pull away again. Hope this was just a mechanical failure. Seems #4053 wasn’t even running?
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 2 года назад
@@pjotrtje0NL I agree that the SD40 didn't sound like it was running. So, yeah, the reason there wasn't enough horsepower is that half of it broke down. I'm not great at reading the springs but it looks like there were a ton of empty cars on that train, so it seems reasonable that 7400HP (SD40-3 plus a Gevo) would be enough if they were both working.

I was stuck on a bus at a RR crossing a couple of months ago - the gates were stuck in the lowered position for about 30 minutes until a crew came out to investigate. I guess the electronics are prone to overheating, because they have a a/c unit on the enclosure.

From 2027, we will no longer have level crossings on main and S-Bahn lines in Berlin. These are currently all being replaced by bridges over or under the railway. At my home on the Dresdner Bahn, the Säntisstraße bridge including the road has been finished since last week. So the level crossing there is now history. Very interesting how such a malfunction is dealt with in Chinchinatti. Greetings from Berlin/ Germany. Sven

Yes, it should be that way in America Apparently it's cost prohibitive
@Harry-zz2oh
@Harry-zz2oh 2 года назад
@@michaelhewitt258 It takes money to make the changes. Where I live, the RR has been requesting the city and county to close off streets to avoid the crossing issues. This has been done in many places and others now have very good signal systems where before it was just a sign. Traffic continues to increase as the residences move out into the countryside.
