He was leaving a mess behind, including drug paraphernalia. Are you okay with kids who are playing in the park falling on or playing with used hypodermic needles? It’s a public park, not his private property. You do not get a pass on being responsible just because you’re trying to do a good thing. The city is doing its job by looking out for ALL of the citizens who use the park.
He could’ve gotten the permit if he hadn’t decided to continue to break the law while the permit was being processed. More importantly, there wouldn’t have been a problem if he had left the area the way he found it. That’s a simple rule we learn as children.
@@Obsidian_Iris_ They could’ve just given him the permit. They gave him an award but not a permit? That makes no sense. Seems like they decided to deny him the permit out of spite. This reminds me of the story of the old lady getting in trouble for feeding the homeless. The city really likes punishing people for feeding the homeless while they are the ones causing homelessness getting rid of low income homes…

Well, they did state at the end of the video that the local homeless population has decreased by 35%....that just means that their laws are working. Kind of....They're moving the homeless to somewhere else.
@@madmaximilian5783 I see both sides of the issue. I generally feel that dealing (as well as feeding) with the homeless should be left to the experts (local food banks, shelters, churches, Red Cross, etc...). On the other hand, it's only one day a week....I don't see the harm.
Did you pay attention to the entire story? The city’s complaints were valid. He should have cleaned the area after they used it and when he found out about the drug paraphernalia, let the people know they couldn’t use drugs in the park. Would you want a child to come across a syringe with a used needle in it? He didn’t get the permit because he continued to flout the law the 60 days it took to process the permit. He deserved to get charged.
What a screwed up world we live in when feeding the hungry is a crime and attempting to elect a criminal as president is seen as normal. You rock, Brother!
Falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments. But Trump is a known corporate crook. Yeah its screwed up feeding the homeless is now a crime. Here in Asia people mostly leave them alone let people sell on the street. Some people live in old empty buildings. When I can I go with a group feed the people on the street always drop a bit to help out. People in America need to realize that if they lose their job they can lose their home end up on the street. The city isn’t wrong! The problem isn’t feeding the homeless, it’s leaving a mess behind in a public park; including drug paraphernalia. A child playing in the park could fall on or play with a used hypodermic needle left on the ground. The city didn’t ask him to stop, just do it right. This means getting a license and keeping the area clean. This is perfectly reasonable and it isn’t difficult to do. @@presidentcamacho You can run for office, and in the off-chance that you are selected, you will be obligated to toe the "C40 Cities" line. A responsible agency that cared would attempt to at least send someone to make sure he's not doing anything blatantly harmful while feeding people in that waiting period. There's a lot of things we can be patient about. Feeding the homeless and the hungry, and hell maybe just plain the lonely who want an excuse to share a meal in public, is absolutely not one of them.
Give him a permit. That place always has trash and drug paraphernalia! Always. Clean it up Tempe and let the homeless eat. The meth addicts don't want to eat, heroin addicts are too sick. Tempe, like ASU, has grown intolerant to people who try to institue a little change. Its always about the money. This young man is an example of compassion and a willigness to help others. Traits my boomer generation used to have but lost because they got lazy.... I hope the Institue for Justice helps him out.
He’s not even anywhere near the first. People have been getting fined and criminally charged all over the country for feeding the homeless. How sick is that!?
loved ASU, tried to make a living afterwards, after 17 years total came to conclusion AZ is a good place for school, retirees ( if your in good health ) and a great place to pursue a career at Circle K ( aka 7/11 most everywhere else )...
So Tempe has something wonderful and beautiful occurring in the midst of pain and want, and this is their response? Got it. I definitely will not consider buying property there after all.
Here in Fort Worth Texas, back in the 90s near downtown, there was this organization that would feed the homeless on Sunday. Then Sunday it stopped. I later found out they were forced to shutdown because people were complaining about it. It was strange because where they served the food all business were closed and the only place open was my church two blocks away. Turns out it was people who went to my church. Guess they missed the part about Jesus saying take care of the less fortunate...
Happened to a Pastor in Ohio this past winter when he opened the doors for the homeless during the freezing weather😢😢 Instead of fining him maybe educate him on how to do it legally. Oh thats right they dont want anyone helping the homeless smh

Number of ODs has skyrocketed. Why not admit they are not "Homeless" but rather "DRUG ADDICTS" and get them into Rehab? Is it really compassionate to enable drug addicts to live in the gutter with only an OD as their future hope?

It is not 'what' is being done that is the problem. All venues require a permit. Let them slide on permitting and other's will expect the same. What they 'should' do is offer the AZ hugs organization a 'deal' for the permit specifically because they are 'not profiting'. they are 'not marketing', they are 'not promoting', they are simply 'providing a humanitarian service'.

Ahh, yes, to feed the homeless, you must first apply for a permit. Then, the FDA should make sure the food is okay. Then, have OSHA check out your site to make sure there are no safety violations. You gotta make sure the Fire department is ready just in case a grill gets out of control. Hire an ambulance just in case anybody chokes. Hire security. Finally, pay for the permit... Rent the space. Then you can feed some homeless people... Cool... Got it...
would never spend a dime in Tempe.. city is backwards.. other Arizona cities are not far behind, but at least they allow certain things.. usually the end of the month and the beginning of the month is the worst time because most people are very short on their EBT cards because obviously they don't give you enough to 290 per person for a whole month. most people make it three weeks untilTheir card is empty... that's why you usually see a lot of begging the end of the month or the beginning of the month the first week.. but yes 290 is not cutting it especially with inflation prices an extra $60 on top would help greatly so they should raised by $60-$70 a month for everybody... that would take care of a lot of the begging on the street.. but yet this is pretty heartless, I know people from that area that left because Tempe is messed up.. now they spend their time in Mesa good people to but yeah I would never go there. You'd have to pay me... to spend a dime in Tempe

I am 100% on this guys side, but it would have been smart to just wait a few months so that if they denied the permit then he would have much more justification to just go ahead and keep feeding people than to just ignore the rules we all have to follow. The optics of it would have been better that way although they should still show mercy in this case he’s clearly doing good work here
What a kind heart this man has. Most people would not step out to feed the homeless so the homeless would just starve in a civilized city. God will probably give him one of the largest rewards in heaven while city officials may not make it through the door.
I was homeless for 3 years & I agree with the neighbors. Whenever I went to a feeding there was always dope & many times fights. I found it better just to eat from a dumpster.
if I had the means, and the way. I’d be doing the same thing. But I can’t, so I help those who live in my neighborhood, who need food. I’m blind, I live in subsidize housing, I love to cook, so I’ll share my food with those in my neighborhood. If I could, I would be feeding the homeless as well. Lack of transportation is the issue. They need to leave that man alone and let him feed the people. That’s what the Lord would want.
City of Tempe, do you know whether the decrease by 34% is due to that portion starving to death? Could you perhaps clarify that little detail for us all?
If this guy endures any fines, those fines should be allocated to the cities homeless program, and this guy needs a humanitarian award. These politicians in these lawmakers are cowards they don’t want to face the homeless population, their rules and regulations bring on restriction and repression.
It’s been this way for years. My friends were arrested in San Francisco in the 80’s for throwing a BBQ for homeless people. Didn’t take long. They arrested everybody serving.
Never in my life have i ever heard of someone getting into trouble by feeding the homeless. Only in America can this happen. Getting a permit to feed starving people.
