In this further video filmed in London UK, Tom Mackie takes you on location for a sunrise shoot and provides a guide to cityscape photography with a tutorial covering from capturing an image to the final processing.
This 'over the shoulder' video joins Tom on location overlooking Canary Wharf in London where he explains his choice of composition and the image he is trying to create using a panoramic stitch.
Having captured a series of shots on location, Tom continues from his studio to show how he combines and processes the images taken to create his final image using Lightroom, Photoshop and Luminar 4.
At the end of the video Tom shares his finished image.
We hope you find this video useful and as ever, if you have any questions or want additional items covered in future videos, please just leave a comment below.

Another great video Tom, I often use the negative structure slider in Luminar to enhance the smooth water effect. Thanks for sharing.

Very interesting as always Tom 👍 The tip you give about it 'always being better to have more than enough' is extremely apt in most types of architectural photography (especially if one doesn't have a tilt-shift lens) when straightening verticals/correcting perspective you can guarantee a lot of your original image will be lost.

Wonderful image of this impressive skyline, Tom. Clouds look soft in the video, but when editing they really pop...great! 10 days ago i was in Frankfurt, another must-have Skyline...never get tired of Skylines ;-)

Hi Henk, yes it's hard to tell from the video what the sky was really like. Some viewers may think that I punched it up too much, but that's how it was. Anyway, isn't photography about interpretation? That's what makes photography so wonderful!

Great info Tom with the final result brilliant, with the 1st set of 6 images you were on 400 iso, then you did change to iso 200 for the 2nd set ??. The light changes so quickly when doing a sunrise and also a sunset. Appreciate your support and sharing your knowledge. Thank You
@LandscapePhotographyiQ
@LandscapePhotographyiQ 3 года назад
Yes, exactly, as the light changes I had to adjust the ISO in order to maintain the long exposure. Glad you enjoyed it!

Hi Tom, great video! You should do some city scape Plano’s of Singapore…. I’ve been photographing Singapore for 12 years now and there are few cities like it in the world….

Hi Mark, thanks, I had a one day layover in Singapore a few years ago and managed to make it to Marina Bay. I was so impressed by the architecture and especially how clean the city was. I really hope to go back one day.

Personal preference I know, but what's the point of having a colourful sky if you don't show the colour?
@MrJason8957

I would think that over the course of six 20s photos at that time of day, the light would chance a significant amount. Did you account for that in any way?
@LandscapePhotographyiQ
@LandscapePhotographyiQ 2 года назад
I used matrix metering to arrive at a base exposure, then switched to manual to capture the series.

Really enjoy your videos, Tom but I'm surpised at how much you use Luminar to alter the finished image. I know we all have our own ideas about what is acceptable in post processing but if you enhance the colours in the sky to be far more spectatcular than they were in reality, is there a point when it ceases to be 'photography'? I have no qualms about cloning distracting elements or enhancing colours to acieve the best representation of what I actually saw....but how far should you go?
@LandscapePhotographyiQ
@LandscapePhotographyiQ 2 года назад
Hi Nigel, Sorry for the delay in responding as I'm currently leading workshops. This is a good question and one that comes up from time to time. Photography is not reality, it's the way a photographer chooses to interpret a scene. You couldn't see in the video what the actual colour and tone of the sky was, but it did have a beautiful pink colour when it peaked. Luminar helps to achieve my end result much quicker and easier. You could probably get similar results with other editing programs, but Luminar just saves so much time and is actually quite fun to use. How far you go is a personal choice. I capture and process my images to sell to magazines, books, calendars etc. so the images need to stand out and grab the viewers attention. There are times when reality is quite boring and would be no more than a record shot. It's not until the photographer puts their own unique vision into the final image when he or she creates something magical. Have a look at Ansel Adam's original negative of Moonrise over Hernandez, NM as it looks nothing like the final print. Hope this helps.

Would it be possible for you to address the size limits of photos prior to printing. A pano created from only 2 photos taken with a Sony A7RIV (61 MP) exceeded size limits of most online print shops; what would be an acceptable size for large prints? Thanks
@LandscapePhotographyiQ
@LandscapePhotographyiQ 2 года назад
It's better to have more than enough file size as it can always be downsized for whatever size print you want to make. Most online printers give the maximum file size for prints so this will be acceptable for the largest print they will print.
