This year, Seattle will mark the anniversary of a pivotal event that brought the world to the city and offered a glimpse of the future. The Century 21 Exposition - better known as the Seattle World’s Fair - celebrates its 60th birthday. The fair attracted nearly 10 million people during its six-month run. It even turned a profit. After the crowds left, the fairgrounds became Seattle Center. Several attractions became icons, including the Space Needle and the Monorail. See who helped make the Seattle World’s Fair possible and how its legacy continues to unfold. Host Mona Lee Locke has these stories and much more from the Space Needle observation area!

What awesome memories... I was 14 years old and still remember a lot of the fun and futuristic things at the fair. Happy 60th!!

I don't know why I have no memory of the Bubbleator, but maybe it was always so jammed that we just steered clear of it and didn't ride it. Or maybe we did, and I just don't remember.

I have a friend who works for the transit system. He drives a city bus but sometimes is assigned to the monorail. He said the average speed (if I can remember) about 25-35 mph. You're only supposed to take the corners at probably in the 20s mph. He said one time he took a corner at 63 mph. He said "Yea, that's a record no one wants to even try to break!" I don't know if there were people on it or not, as like a bus, it runs at a determined schedule, not "when it gets full."

I wonder how much it would cost to build the space needle in today's 2023 money?

It's a shame the theme park aren't there anymore but understand it had to go away. 😔
