Ciudad del Este is a city and district in Paraguay, located in the extreme east of the country on the banks of the Paraná River. It is the capital of the department of Alto Paraná and is located 327 km from the country's capital - Asunción -, connected by Route 2. It is also connected to Brazil through the Ponte Internacional da Amizade, on the Paraná River. It is the largest city within what is called the "Triple Border", which borders Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil and Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, with those that make up a large urban conglomerate of almost one million inhabitants. Nearby Ciudad del Este is the Itaipu Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the world; and the Iguaçu Falls, one of the wonders of the natural world, among other tourist attractions.
Due to its population and economic development, it is the second most important city in Paraguay, after Gran Asunción. According to DGEEC projections, there are 300,255 inhabitants and its metropolitan area, with around half a million inhabitants, if only spoken within the department. The city has a significant population of Lebanese and Taiwanese immigrants.
Ciudad del Este is characterized by being a commercial and lately industrial city, being mainly known for being one of the largest free trade zones in the world. It is the main city for shopping tourism - the most important in the country and in the region. Daily, many tourists from all over the world, especially Brazilians and Argentines, cross the Friendship Bridge, at the border, to buy in Ciudad del Este.
Guaraní International Airport, the second most important airport in the country, located in the neighboring city of Minga Guazú, serves Ciudad del Este. In addition, the city is home to Club Atlético 3 de Febrero, with the Antonio Aranda Stadium, which was used for the 1999 Copa América and is the third largest stadium in Paraguayan football.
