Saturday marks the 59th anniversary of when Tougaloo College students and faculty staged a sit-in at the Woolworth's lunch counter in Jackson, Mississippi. The historic moment was documented by an iconic photograph that shows the sit-in by civil rights activists protesting segregation and the violent reaction that soon provoked. Elise Preston spoke to some of those who were there that day and saw it first-hand.
"CBS Saturday Morning" co-hosts Jeff Glor, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson deliver two hours of original reporting and breaking news, as well as profiles of leading figures in culture and the arts. Watch "CBS Saturday Morning" at 7 a.m. ET on CBS and 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

I met this wonderful woman at the Airport in Memphis, TN back when I worked there. She was kind and an awesome woman. He son was so kind and cool too. One of the best days of my life. I especially loved her t-shirt of her own mugshot saying "This is my government ID".

I wish I had done what she did. Unfortunately, I was on m own & all I could do was argue with my racist Father & Mother. I never thought what my Father said (he was a George Wallace delegate for the presidential nomination.) made ANY sense.

She certainly got into good trouble and broke that awful dark cycle of racism and absolute hatred…👏🏽❤️👏🏽 Her mugshot photo is actually in the Smithsonian African American museum in DC.

Thank you Joan. Thank you very much. Older friends of mine, then students at Morehouse and Spellman, organized the non-violent sit-ins in Atlanta......All of you have made a significantly positive difference.

Certain people still act this way today. Thinking it's all fun and games, boy talk, guys being guys. This is sickening America. If only they had AR 15s to defend themselves.
