This movie seemed like it would be some sort of insight into the horrors of a second American civil war with details on the why and how. However, that's not what this movie turned out to focus on. Its focus is on combat photography and the suspension from reality people face when put in extreme circumstances. Not a bad film but the marketing made me think it would go in a very different direction.

It very much was about the horrors of a second American Civil War. How on earth did you miss that? It doesn't ever expain how the war started or get into politics, but that's because it doesn't matter, it's horrible no matter the cause.

Essentially it’s exactly like the purge. You get sold that the movie is about a free for all rampage of crime but in reality it’s a story about a home invasion. Civil war doesn’t want to tell you the boring details of how and why this is happening. Whatever reason in your head is enough. It’s not a bad movie but it’s not the story of this civil war. It’s just trying to survive it.

@@DavidLLambertmobile Nah, you gotta pay attention to the movie, man. They said pretty clearly that most of the military loyal to the president had already surrendered to the Western Forces, which is why they were able to march on DC like that. The soldiers and Secret Service agents that were defending the president in DC were just the few hardcore fanatics who refused to surrender. As such, we can assume NORTHCOM and it's commanding general were part of the forces that surrendered to the Western Forces. Unless they were part of the fanatics that were making their last stand in DC, in which case that commanding general was likely either captured or killed when the Western Forces took DC.

there also were several other factions but they were mostly peaceful to each other, it was the Florida alliance in the Southeast (Everything from Florida to Louisiana and Oklahoma to Tennessee), the Western Forces (Texas and California) and the New People's Army to the northwest (Pretty much the whole region). It seems to be a growing trope born out of screenwriters who somehow feel these twerps of a character will somehow push the story along, a few months or years ago there was a very dumb zombie movie made and same situation, some naive girl disobeying the rules and reason to try and learn the fate of her friend which ultimately leads to several characters deaths. The main problem I had with this movie is that everything seemed too "clean". For I mean, for a nation that has supposedly been ripped apart by civil war for years, everything seems to still be in relatively good condition. The actual fighting also looked too "Hollywood" in my opinion. I was expecting something grittier, darker and more brutally realistic like what we saw in the movie Children of Men.

@ch-yq5yn Some of our largest naval yards are located in California, so it's likely rebel forces seized a good chunk of the Navy and could have used it to defeat the remaining federal navy and could be blockading major ports, which would go a long way to explain how the rebels are winning. That's just my guess though. Air Force is probably split between feds and rebels too. And since this movie takes place towards the end of the war, the federal air force has likely been defeated and the rebels have air superiority. Who controls the nukes is largely irrelevant. Neither side is going to risk using them, since doing so would instantly unite the country against whoever used them and likely bring in tons of international intervention against whoever used nukes too. Basically, using nukes would ensure defeat for whoever used them.

I am training as a gardener first, as a sheepdog second. My background is in engineering and history. The estimates presented are based on wars since 1940. The most dangerous enemy in a Civil War is disease. Second is environmental toxins. Third is starvation. Fourth is heat and humidity. Fifth is cold. Normal death rate in the US between two and three million a year. A war in America, first year ten million dead of disease, exposure, malnutrition, poison and no outside help after a disaster. Combatants, less than two hundred thousand. After four years, one hundred million non-combatants million dead. These are conservative numbers. And after the war ends, that two to three million a year would stay at ten million a year for at least a few years. Epidemics of childhood diseases would spread again. Last case of polio I personally remember was 1965, David in second grade. It will be back after a civil war. Infrastructure, well, without the normal repairs, 3 percent of everything would fail in four years. But there would be people who with the best of intentions would destroy communications, electric grid, pipelines for petroleum and natural gas, bridges, dams, locks, harbors, refineries, railroads, government buildings, hospitals, subways, airports and so on. And the money will be worthless. All those 401k's and IRA's, worthless. Who would be involved? Anyone with an axe to grind, and there's lots of them out there. Racists, pro 2A, anti immigrant, immigrants, religious extremists from all sides, cults, anti-technologists, inner city gangs, small town militias, anti-Boomers, socialists, anarchists, preppers, vegans, anti abortion, pro abortion, then you have the foreign interference and peacekeepers. Everyone from NATO and UN peacekeepers, Mexican and Colombian cartels, China, Cuba, ISIS and Hezbollah would want a piece of the action. Most would all be glad to shoot, rape, loot, spread disease and poison, blow things up. Who would win? India? South Africa? Certainly not anyone in the US. It would be the worst case of unintended consequences the US has seen. Whoever calls for a civil war and initiates it will go down in history with people like Slobodan Milošević, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Pol Pot and Adolf Hitler. But go ahead, train for it, publish manifestos, stir things up. Maybe that's what this country deserves at this point is to be reduced to a third world shithole. May God have mercy.

I personally really liked this film, but I can see how others might not have. I think people were expecting this film to be about the war itself and not just the journalists behind it. For example, I know people that wanted to know how Texas and California got together despite being politically polar opposite states, but nothing came up and it was clear that both were put together just so it wouldn’t spark controversy towards critics, and people saw it as a missed opportunity more than anything.

@El-Harto I’ll put it like this… there’s no character development, or even a backstory to what started the war.

@El-Harto I think the director completely missed the mark if that was his intent. I’d like to hear your opinion once you see the film.

@@jeanmelisca its an anti war movie. The director intentionally made the backstory vague to prove the message that in war there are no good guys. Character development could have used work but overall I thought the movie was great. I don't think it was that bad.

@@balapadmanabhan5705 I understand. I just don’t think the director did a good job at telling the story. In the end it was a story about a roadtrip/coming of age.

Only good part of the movie . Saw this scene before and made me want to watch the whole thing . Huge mistake . Boring/corny talking for literally most of the movie with a Nightcrawler Movie ending that made no sense .i wouldve stopped watching withen the first 30 mins but gave A24 the benefit of the doubt and i was disappointed 😞
