This nation needs the CCC again. Our parks are in disrepair....our forests are a tragedy.....waterways are getting better but nowhere near where they need to be. So much work to do.

My father was in the CCC for 3 years, he was a lumberjack in Tennessee. He tried to join the Army but failed the hearing test, so he joined the CCC instead.

The C.C.C. also had regular P.E. and taught too march in step and also taught how to operate and work together. The C.C.C. recruits were being given basic military recruit training with the exception of weapons and hand to hand training. They had been toughened up and when the war came the men of the C.C.C. were already more than half trained and moved through Marine boot and Army recruit training camps much easier.

Tomlinson Run state park was built by the CCC. The old original shelters were built from cut stone and huge timbers. They still stand in perfect condition to this day. They have a permanent smell of wood smoke from the large fireplaces on each end. Thankfully they haven't burned or been destroyed in other ways. They take me back just by going inside one of them. There are 2 of them. Upper and lower shelters are both great.

I had high school friends working for the CCC in Oklahoma in the late 70’s. Mostly, they were working at the national parks and slept in cabins and enjoyed being away from parents for the summer and hooking up with boys in the forest. 😁 A Google search says the CCC was defunded, with camps being closed, in 1942 but officially, it was not ended. My friends absolutely worked for the CCC in the late 70’s….

My dad was in the CCC and helped build a road through a mountain range. It prepared him to join the Army where he retired after 20 years. He had lots of stories about his CCC experiences.

My grandfather was in the CC camps in northern California building roads through the mountains. We have his black and white photos of the various satellite camps, and of the stars of western movies that came and entertained them on rare occasions. To hear him talk about it, it was one of the best experiences of his life. P.S. He was technically too young to go, but his oldest brother who was supposed to go was a bad drunk and my great-grandmother guilt-tripped my grandfather into going in his place.
