Fans of snugpak: Are you willing to treat your stuff as you would military-issue gear? If not then it ain't "rugged!" I actually like a lot of their stuff, so don't think I'm just hating 👍😎

Yea most MI stuff is considered bomb proof, it's also heavy. In the military you may carry some of your gear for distances, but a lot of gear is transported around in trucks. I think it makes sense for the military, I think it makes sense for some people that don't hike in long distances to their site. I think a lot of people like the idea of MI or military grade i.e. rugged gear but then when you pack it all up and see the size and weight it becomes a lot, especially if you're hiking 10 miles in or more.
@quirinaled2752
@quirinaled2752 3 года назад
Yep, there's also the fact that a lot of military guys (as I believe the reviewer said) just don't take basic care of their gear, so it's designed to take a lot of abuse. I don't beat the crap out of gear I've paid good money for, so it doesn't tend to fall apart on me. That said, Snugpak gear is slightly flimsy in my experience - if someone's looking for bomb proof etc they're probably not the best choice. But their stuff is lightweight, warm and comfortable - it works perfectly if that's what you need.

Man - too bad you don’t live in the Carolinas. I swear we share a parent. This is fucked up. I was a SAW gunner in Afghanistan. I’m a hiker/Bushcrafter (whatever the fuck you call it) and I carry military gear. I’ll take the weight because I know I can depend on it. And I’ve used the modular sleep system in Afghanistan in freezing temps with no overhead cover. AND SLEPT GREAT!!! Plus, I’m fit and can carry the shit. So fuck the ultralight shit (to an extent). I still incorporate UL gear, but for the shit my experience rides in, give me ACTUAL military grade. Cheapest Bidder? Sure. But real and effective.
@keksimusultimus4257
@keksimusultimus4257 2 года назад
you're absolutely right, but that snugpak is damn small. fits in every bag. And for the price, it's great. For someone in a climate like mine, it's perfect for outdoors. And it's for sure a good entry sleeping bag until you upgrade. Combine it with a liner and a bivy, and you got a solid sleeping system for a while.

Another clown report! You cannot do a direct comparison of a military system and a civilian system. Yes, it's OD Green. Yes, some soldiers are using it because it is better than what they are issued. But was it created as a military combat issued item. No! Military grade refers to the standards by which the military evaluates equipment. If you wanted to discuss the standards, you need do your research, and know what you're talking about. Additionally, military systems are inherently heavier than civilian systems. Civilian systems constantly evolve based on the market and technology. Military systems do not. The military does do research into various systems, but more often than not buy Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) items. Lastly, if your intention was to prove to the girls and airsoft community, but then I repeat myself, what a all knowing and powerful man you are, you only impressed 601 out of 12.5K viewers. Not impressive at all.

Elite Survival Systems makes awesome bags. I’ve never been in the military but I don’t treat my bag gentle. I have ultra lightweight gear too so I know the difference. I have to be gentle with my ultralight gear. The Elite Survival Systems bags are hardcore It has shit zipper pulls but there is plenty of room to make some out of 550 cord. It doesn’t snag at all. You can rip it open and it opens like butter. Closing it can catch a bit but if you back off just a tiny bit you can carry on.

That’s really cool you got a lot of stuff from your Grandpa. When I was in the Boy Scouts we used to drive down to Fort Bragg in “Fayette-nam” (Fayetteville NC) and hit the Surplus stores to buy supplies for our new Scouters. Our troop kept an account to provide for new members who came from less-well-off families. The surplus stores there would see us coming and would drop the prices for us even more, knowing why we were there. Milsurp - while a ton heavier - tends to be bomb-proof. Think what it would be like if it WASN’T made by the lowest bidders!

I don't know if you did your research but from what I can tell you act like Snug Pak is a civilian company. Snug Pak is a UK company was created by a military veterans specifically for the SAS originally and it has sold from there. Snug Pak is the equivalent to the MSS in the UK and both are military contracted. Both Snug Pak and MSS sell to civilian markets and both have veterans who made the company. Snug Pak is the official issue in UK, and SOF community's in USA. I don't understand why your comments are along the lines Snug pak is a tactical wanna be. It's not it is official military issue. I have been issued both and I will absolutely say Snug pack is better and packs smaller. I do like my MSS but it's very bulky and when I'm humping in bulk does not cut it. Its a killer combo, never been this comfy sleeping in nature, the only thing that killed the fun for me was the absolute garbage Snugpack Stratosphere bivi that ended up getting soaked in a very mild although long period of a central european rain. Good thing Caribthia Defence 4 kept me dry even though it got pretty wet on the outside and inflatable mat protected me from the soaked bottom. But still a huge fail on Sungpack side. Gonna try to return this for warranty and if they refuse its probably going straight to trash, i dont even feel comfortable reselling this one.

@@djocharablaikan8601 please don't throw it away it's just because the defense isn't designed for the stratosphere. The stratosphere is designed for a much slimmer sleeping bag and everywhere where the defense for was touching against the tent walls it was letting in moisture. Normandy the stratosphere should be used in conjunction with a snugpak sleeping bag because it's designed for that 😅 if you want to have the perfect question for your defense 4 I can only recommend the observer plus from carinthia but it will cost you an arm and a leg 😅 you'll just better off buying the 70€ snugpak sleep extreme sleeping bag and using that in conjunction with your Stratosphere and I can personally guarantee you will have a great sleeping experience..... @@LeopoldElwes i think i will just opt for a DD hammock instead, should fit in carinthia defence 4 just fine i hope. I also have the carinthia tropen to use it with in case defence 4 is too big for it but i doubt this was the reason because i made my sleeping setup well before i went to bed because i was expecting the rain, and stratosphere was letting the water in allready. I also used it with much smaller sleeping bag in tenerife and the inside was basicaly coated with water at the slightest rain or moisture, and my bag was getting wet pretty often. Zippers plain suck. Ventilation is pretty bad and i ended up opening the main zippers quite often so as to not choke from lack of air. I used it somewhat succesfully there because the weather is very forgiving on canary islands but this bag will certainly not hold up against any significant rain. Gonna see what the Seller says about this but bivy bag that doesnt protect you from the elements is a dead weight in my eyes.

Like you said, snugpak makes good stuff. However I will always make the argument that military surplus will 9 times out of 10 be much tougher. Everyone says "mil-surp sucks!" Or "it's garbage!" And yes some of it that I have tested does suck... But most of it is crazy tough and will outlast pretty much anything on the civilian market. Is it heavier? Usually. Is it worth the extra weight? Most definitely.

I think you make good points. I have served as well. I prefer civilian gear. Military gear is to heavy. I would run circles around military people because you to heavy. A good book to read is Secrets of the Vietcong. Light infantry is the best. The US military has overloaded our military. The grunt has to carry amo, weapons, motors and heavy machine guns. Lighter equipment is crucial. The US military response is to keep getting our gear heavier. Not good. It reminds me of an fat cow. You want the cow as fat as possible before you eat him.

I'm not fully disagreeing with this, but it didn't sit right with me about what you said with the grabbing it and pulling the bag open, so I got out my mss and my sf system and did some dry runs, I found that with my bags, with perfect condition zips both systems opened like silk, all the way to the bottom, as a matter of fact I found that the snugpak zip was smoother (I put this down to less milage) . But I assure you, I didn't hold back and really went for it but because there was no snagging basically no matter how fast I pulled apart the zip just went and there was no stress on the stitching. I think from my experience, the snugpak gear is tough, but when you actually compare it to military gear it feels weaker than it actually is. Also, my snugpak was nearly 3x the cost so I'm not going to be sleeping in puddles with it.

I love the HD zips on the MSS bag that never snag - total reliability you can count on. Same on the MSS bivy..so awesome for exiting in a hurry.. The Snugpak zips do sometimes snag which is a pain in the ass if you need to get out quick. If you want to get our quick you want to get out quick! I have several of the Antarctic RE-25 bags here at Alaska Raft Connection. I thoroughly inspect gear selections, assess for realistic expectations, and evaluate performance to reliability and longevity. I do this in a variety of proving-grounds, in conditions extending all 4-seasons, mild to demanding wild. When I researched these bags, I was relatively certain that they were 're-badged' version similarities of euro materials/insulation and features or copies of sleeping bags like Carinthia. 'Claims' -4 F comfort to extreme -58F rating that is laughable unless you are in some 40 yard potato-sack hopping race. 'Reasonable Rating' ranges from comfort at 10 F to extreme -15F. While warmer and thermally more efficient than a US MSS system w/ all components... it is not nearly as durable. Reliability factors like zippers, type of seams, seam-work, stuff-sack materials/construction are not in the realm up 'grunt-proof' or for outfitting/rentals. I typically outfit these bags (as well as US MSS) to customers on river rafting trips that tend to be cold sleepers in Fall conditions for the extended 3+ season. The extra comfort may go a long way vs. bags pegged at say 15-20 F ranges when looking at likelihood Aug./Sept. 20-45 F sleeping scenarios running rivers, fishing, and hunting. The MSS gets the durability, versatility, and availability nod. The Antarctic RE gets the thermal efficiency perks. Neither is all that great for what I would relate as being optimized for sub-0 F winter demands. As for stuff-sacks: the Snugpack is quite poorly made concerning materials and sewing vs. US MSS standard nylon version is very durable, yet somewhat funky as compared with modern compression sack designs.

You are 100% correct about the zipper being the most important part of a sleeping bag. I bought a new bag in '98, my 30-year old bag was leaking feathers like a hose and most of the seams were blown. Every bag I tested had wimpy zippers except the bag I bought. Big surprise is the brand was REI. The best part was synthetics advanced to almost equal warmth/weight ratio of down, and it was long enough for my 6'3" and my boots.

I'm sure that's true for many people. It's also cheaper than if you got a new MSS on the civ market. I still lean toward my military stuff, even in normal situations. Maybe I abuse my equipment too much, but I just destroy every piece of civilian gear I've ever owned.

Snug pac used to make their stuff in the UK and had a good reputation. They moved production over sea's and I'm given to believe the quality went down while the prices did not. So it's not "British stuff" anymore although they would like you to think that.

I still have my Snugpak I bought for Y2k... have any idea how they've updated them since then? My chief complaint with the Snugpak is the too-small compression bag which is impossible to fit the damn bag back in it, so I use that bag for a ditty elsewhere, and jam my Snuggie in a slightly larger ditty. And yeah my 2nd complaint is the zipper gets stuck in the fabric real easy. It's worked pretty well with a snoopy blanket, and I recently got me a US bivvy sack so I can go sans tent. Peace.

I have used British Army gear in the field back in the day and more recent, also have a number of Snugpak items that are useful and help civvies and would be useful for the armed forces in many situations. The key thing to note when buying snugpak items is where is the gear made. If you want the best Snugpak items (from my experience and view point) then you have to seek out the UK produced items and ignore the 'imported' items that are only good for the happy camping types. So sleeping bags like the Softie Antarctica for winter, Softie 3, 6, 9, 10. 12, 15, Special Forces 1 & 2 (excellent bag combined for year round use) or the Tactical 2, 3 or 4 these are all much better quality than other items in the Snugpak range and will serve the enlisted man, trail bashers or Grunt Proof fans much better day to day year in year out. Some great points in the video and a reminder that buy cheap imported cr*p and you either buy twice or freeze/miserable when you really needed the kit to step up and it failed.

Gr8 video, late to the show here. Ditto: I have the intermediate usgi bag, and just got the s/p base ops navigator, no comparison. The s/p is supposed to be a 28° bag, I was out in a tent in 45° and got cold, wrapped my heavy coat around my chest and hood over my head. For the weight and size of this bag, it's not worth the 60 bucks on amazon, yes the zipper hangs up, I almost peed my pants cause I couldn't get out. Thinking about returning it, got 2 weeks before I can't. Might use it for car camping because it does make into a quilt. The usgi intermediate bag (used) has served me well, looking for a new one ,if possible now. The face opening is just right, where the s/p won't draw up tight. Final: s/p does have good stuff, stay away from there sleeping bags.

Let me clear up the design of zippers for you the military zippers are large and let a lot of cold air through your also made a brass or composite metals which can freeze trapping you inside the bag now on the civilian side you have smaller tiger teeth on the zippers which left let in less air cold air and are coded so they don't freeze up say either one is better it just explain why they went to a smaller zipper because the military ones usually have a zip cover or flap to go over the zipper to keep that air from getting in and 90% of the military gear uses YKK zippers but you're also heavier the newer ones are smaller lighter YKK have double teeth which way stronger civilians have single teeth
