Video Summary: CJS R-Fal Carrier Landing Test on Miltech Simulations' UK Carrier:
In this video, we conduct a landing test of the CJS R-Fal on Miltech Simulations' UK carrier, using three different configurations:
- Default stock fuel.
- Fully loaded payload with 25% fuel to match 33,000 lbs (in this configuration, landing speed should be around 130 knots with a 16-degree AOA).
-5% fuel (lightweight configuration where landing speed should be around 110 knots with a 16-degree AOA).
Preliminary Considerations:
- It is necessary to activate the modern arrestor hook, or the aircraft risks failing to catch the arrestors and may overshoot the runway.
- Even though the hook appears deployed in approach mode, it's crucial to toggle the hook on and off at least once when on the runway to ensure proper deployment.
Key Observations:
- Upon activating approach mode, the system sets the speed to around 170 knots, which seems appropriate. The hook and landing gear are deployed as expected. However, a significant issue arises with the trim setting, which defaults to an excessive 80%, causing unnecessary nose-up attitude.
Trim should ideally start neutral and be adjusted by the user to around 10-15%. The correct trim is the amount that allows for an angle of attack (AOA) of approximately 13 degrees during descent and 16 degrees at touchdown.
Landing References:
- For a weight of 33,000 lbs, the reference should be an AOA between 13-16 degrees and an airspeed between 126-135 knots. As the weight decreases, the speed should also be reduced.
- The minimum landing speed should be 110 knots with a 16-degree AOA for a lightweight configuration of around 25,000 lbs. (In real-life operations, this configuration is unlikely, as the aircraft's armament typically raises the gross weight).
