CJ Stroud is the best quarterback to ever come out of Ohio State, and will finally end their NFL nightmare. Stroud has had an impressive 2 seasons as a Buckeye, and is now positioned to go top 2 in the NFL draft, and absolutely dominate. No Ohio State Quarterback has ever had legitimate success at the next level, but Stroud is about to be that guy. Why is he better than everybody who came before him? And why is he the best player in the 2023 NFL draft? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze Ohio State Buckeye Quarterback CJ Stroud before the 2023 NFL draft.

I would argue that while yes, Ohio State is a "bust" factory but so is every other university. Alabama might be able to say it's a great qb school but this is only recent and depending on how Tua's health goes, how Mac Jones develops, and how Jalen Hurts does even Alabama doesn't have a great track record. Clemson has Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence but that's just two recent quarterbacks over the course of decades. Carson Palmer is the only USC quarterback to really produce in the NFL and Stanford produced John Elway and Andrew Luck but they were decades apart. The reality is there really isn't a university that routinely produces excellent pros at the quarterback position, you get one maybe a decade as a school while the rest are just average or eventually backups.
@brycehawes38
@brycehawes38 Год назад
Yeah but it’s the volume of qbs plus the fact that none of them have had any success except for sort of one year of fields. USC might be more of a bust factory but at least some of their guys are decent

CJ is already this good with having spent his entire football career so far spending half his day in class, then learning football AFTER. Imagine when it's his actual job to do football, and he can just sit around all day, outside of the gym, learning his position, watching tape, and working with guys like Josh McCown on cleaning up some of his small issues. He seems like he has the potential to really be an elite quarterback, and I'm rarely that impressed by a guy coming out of college. To be fair, Bryce Young also has a lot of really good attributes that show just how smart the guy is, and how he understand football, but I think as a Panther fan, if we roll the dice on Stroud and it doesn't play out, I can't be too upset because of how good the kid looks.

Chris Sims made the best point about this. You wouldn’t draft a Texas Tech qb until Patrick Mahomes showed up. Wouldn’t draft a Berkeley qb until Rodgers showed up. If a player is going to be special, he’s going to be special regardless of the college he went to.
@Marquesjones5
@Marquesjones5 Год назад
@noturbusiness123 he would have to have played for somebody else and been less successful before Andy Reid to know that he needed Andy Reid. Mahomes’ level of talent is undeniable. Maybe less successful without Andy Reid but he would have been great either way.

@AlexRollinsNFL Год назад
Exactly.
@justinmix143
@justinmix143 Год назад
That's a weird point to make. Mostly cause it's not true. Cal was a QB factory in the 70s dude. Their QBs always went to The League. They had at least 15 QBs go to the pros before Rodgers--and it was probably more than that. Even taking teams to the Super Bowl (Vince Ferragamo for Rams. Vs Pittsburg, I think in SB XIX). But since Rodgers, Jared Goff is the only QB to come outta Cal worth a damn. I do like Chris Simms alot as an analyst, but in this case, the actual truth is much closer to the opposite of what he said. At least when it comes to QBs from Berkeley.
@Marquesjones5
@Marquesjones5 Год назад
@@justinmix143 ya but the key there is 70’s. After that the most noteworthy name before Aaron is Kyle boller. Even the qbs before then we’re largely unsuccessful in the nfl with the exception of Steve and Craig Morton. The 80’s and on its Aaron and Goff.
@justinmix143
@justinmix143 Год назад
@@Marquesjones5 The fact that it was in the 70s and 80s is the point. If he's sayin "before Aaron Rodgers, you'd never think of drafting a QB from Cal," yet over 20 QBs actually HAVE been drafted from Cal, mostly BEFORE Rodgers, then....yeah. Obviously, many, many teams would think of it and did do so, many times. Cal was known for their QBs going to The League before Rodgers. Which is the literal opposite of what he said. I would say when it comes to the “curse” your point on talent is huge but I would also just highlight the style of offenses played. Can we name a single a single year other than Haskins’ (and even that is questionable) where the QB was playing an NFL benefiting system? Simple reads, options, and athleticism have been the basis of OSU offenses until Ryan Day and Co. I’d argue OSU has focused on CFB especially B10 success more than NFL preparation in the past.

Troy Smith: was only a backup fringe starter that would’ve extended his career if the rpo-era started earlier. Terrell Pryor: was always just the best athlete playing qb. Probably should’ve switched when he immediately got in the league. They were expecting Cam type tools, but would’ve served better as a big slot/Jimmy Graham-type. Cardale Jones: inexperienced. Wrong place, wrong time at OSU. He would’ve benefited from todays transfer rules. (Thought he suffered from strong-armed syndrome. Much like Will Levis and Josh Allen coming out, every throw had to be a 100mph fast ball) JT: Hurt his knee and ankle really bad, and never fully recovered. Dwayne Haskins: overconfident and immature on one of the worst franchises in his hometown with all his family, old friends, and yes-men. By all accounts they’ve said he ate his humble pie and embraced his leadership role like a proper qb, and was balling that summer camp until his untimely death. Will be one of the biggest “What-ifs” R.I.P.🙏🏼 Justin Fields: is on the Bears. His best weapon was a undersized slot guy until his tight end came back from injury and they traded for a down-trending red zone threat mid-season.Though I’m intrigued with their offseason moves, and I think he’s going to have a breakout year. CJ Stroud: I think he’s the best qb out of the bunch. (I was gonna say he was tied with Barrett but Barrett at least had that athleticism to help him out of tight spots and extend plays. Imo Stroud Qb’d himself out of those types of situations, until he finally decided to use his athleticism against UGA. Also, Idk why people try to downplay his athleticism because he looks pretty athletic to me, but who am I? I just think he’s just wired to play from the pocket.)

I'm definitely a little more skeptical that Fields is gonna be this great QB than most people seem to be. I think people see his highlights, & are just so wowed by his (very good) Michael Vick impression that they fail to see the bigger picture, but he really hasn't been very good overall at throwing the ball in Chicago. At all. You could probably count on yer hands the times he faced pressure last yr & he didn't still try to force a shìt throw into his first read he was locked onto from snap to whistle. And the vast majority of the time that he feels a little heat, he f#¢kin panics. And he just doesn't have the ability to hang in, step up in the pocket, etc, cycle through his reads, & take the hit for the 25 yard completion (or tuck & cover sack that saves a pick). I mean, I seriously don't think he's ever even ATTEMPTED a pass to the 3rd or 4th option as a pro that wasn't a checkdown tailback screen. It's just that the considerable holes there are definitely harder to spot w/ Fields because, if he takes off, watch the f#¢k out man. He'll go yard on you in a heartbeat. Haven't seen a home run hitter like him at QB in....maybe ever in the NFL. He might be better in the open field than Vick or Randall. Which is incredible and super exciting & all that. BUT--you still have GOT TO be able to throw the ball at this level at the QB position, point blank. And so far, he's a mixture of Kordell Stewart (passing) and Randall Cunningham (running) at best. And I'm just not sold he has the goods to develop into this complete, ultimate weapon that everyone says he's gonna be. I guess we'll see, but look at the really nuanced specifics of his passing stats, & the holes are so glaring it's....almost Tebow-like. And those are just the cold, hard facts, Jack. Now--he could prove me wrong though, not sayin that's impossible. But at this point, from what he's showed as a pro, I think realistically....it's less likely to happen that it is more. But it sure is fun to watch him take off w/ the ball in his hands. And even if I am right, he'll still always have a place in The League as a gimmick player.

I’m still taking Bryce. I think people overate how important size is. Andrew luck was massive and got injured a ton. He was supposed to be the next Peyton manning but could run. The only worry would be height and how that could affect him but Alabama’s offensive line is just as tall as an nfl team’s offensive line and he had no problems throwing over the middle. I’m still taking young. He’s just the guy. Stroud is great though and will be a definite starter in my opinion

I think college football fans with age would understand why Osu never had great QBs. They were never getting 5* Qbs like that and OSU was a run first team. Ryan Day changed all that and even Urban wasn't throwing the ball like that. Tressel was way more conservative even with Troy Smith and company he opened it a little, but Troy smith was an athlete that came in a became a QB.....Terrelle Pryor was highly rated but again with a conservative Tressel... The history of OSU football scheme recruiting the position and coaching offenses tells the story more than the players eligible for drafts over the years.

The Ohio state curse was never a thing. People hyped up smith, Pryor, jones, and Barrett all were never supposed to be good nfl QBs. The system urban Meyer runs is so you don’t need a great qb. You just need a guy who can complete short passes and run. Haskins was a little different, in the fact that he was great in the short game but couldn’t run very well. That’s why they threw a lot of quick game concepts that year and he passed for a lot of yards. Fields was kind of that prototype that the others were but he wasn’t totally babied in the same system the others were. He was put in a system very similar to what Andy Reid and his coaching tree runs. That’s why him and stroud while very different in their own rights are still great QBs. The bad news for Ohio state fans is that there new offense will put up great numbers even with worser QBs than fields and stroud but the offense ohio state runs will hurt their defense and make it difficult to go undefeated. That’s why you’ve seen the recent switch in offenses from Alabama and Georgia to a more consistent balanced or slight run based offense
