The history of the MacGregor Clan, or any Highland Clans is colourful. Proscribed for 180 years off and on following the Battle of Glen Fruin, but why? Was it the fault of Clan MacGregor, Clan Colquhoun, or Clan Campbell? Who were the cause of the fall of Clan Gregor, Scottish history tour guide Bruce Fummey tells tales from Scotlands History

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

As a descendant of the" children of the mist" I congratulate you on your synthesis of the Macgregor history. It is hard to attribute the dominant thead of the several competing strands that you outline. A modern perspective of right and wrong does not travel back 400 years too easily. The black and white of today is more finely nuanced yesterday.. In my book the Campbells are the guilty ones.

What a wonderful story. I'm Canadian - my Grandpa was so very proud of his clan roots (MacGregor by way of Jack and Davidson - I think that's Clan Chattan? I named my first son after Grandpa - another generation to carry the name Davidson forward) and I know he would have loved these stories. To the very end of his life, he wore his clan cap and got terribly flinty about clan Campbell. . . "Never trust a Campbell," Grandpa used to say. "Never as far as you could throw him! Most interesting way of breaking down this battle I've ever heard. I had an old friend, a Celtic singer from Scotland who was very proud that he could trace his family back through Clan MacGregor via his mother. But to have a Clan name stricken on pain of death it would have taken far more than a Chief or two, it would take a King. This seems to be a political ploy made to look like Clan rivalry, which is what it became. This was a time when anybody who stood fast to views different from their King could get them all killed and quickly. My friend told me that Clan MacGregor was unhappy that James VI was going to use England as his base instead of bringing England into the Scottish fold. While James was probably wise to do it that way for political reasons it didn't sit well with many and the MacGregors were the most powerful Clan in opposition. So, having curried favor with the King in order to keep their clans alive and in tact, I can see both Colquhoun and Campbell of Argyle making stealthy tactical moves and using propaganda to take the enemy down. That it worked shows part of the beginning of the method England used to disunify the Highlanders as a whole. It worked all too well.
@ScotlandHistoryTours
@ScotlandHistoryTours 3 года назад
Now that's an interesting take
@mattevans923
@mattevans923 3 года назад
I believe King James ordered them to denounce the name on pain of death because the motto for clan MacGregor is “royal is the blood that flows through these veins” or something grammatically similar, so he was basically eliminating potential claimants to the throne.

Imagine if Scotland did bring England under it's rule, wonder what it be like today
@nancyholcombe8030
@nancyholcombe8030 3 года назад
@@mattevans923 that was my friend's belief and mine as well. The MacGregors could have made claim based on having been the rulers a good while back. But it would've ultimately broken Scotland and England both which James was intelligent enough to see. The Clans were thinking in the present. James worried about the future. My friend didn't like this but he agreed with me that James I made the right call.
@nancyholcombe8030
@nancyholcombe8030 3 года назад
@@tub19 it wouldn't have worked, which is at least one of the reasons that he did things the way he did. He was following Elizabeth I who had made England the world power that it still is today. Scotland was slowly starting it's break from the Catholic church but was not far enough away to please the English nobility that had made a complete, clean break through Elizabeth. If memory serves me, James also broke from the Catholic church when he became King of England. Had he not, he would have sparked internal warfare probably ending in his being the first English King executed by his own countrymen instead of Charles I! There were too many ways to get himself killed by the English and this is just one of them! After the execution, the civil war between the two countries would have broken England's international power and made both ripe for European (and Catholic) takeover. James was intelligent enough to save his beloved Scotland even though it didn't seem like he was doing that at the time. He chose to make the wrong decision for many but it probably actually saved the clan rule of the Highlands for at least a little while longer.
@grsfhhytff

It's hard to blame any one source of fault in the old, clan skirmishes, haha. I've always felt that the biggest misfortune of historical Scotland was that we spent so much time scrapping with the neighbours that uniting and becoming an unstoppable force was never an option. If we had learned to get along and collaborate, I reckon we would have made the Vikings look tame in comparison. I used to work for the Colquhouns in Luss and I have to say; we didn't hang as many folk as they used to back in the day, haha.

Great alternative stories Bruce! Being descended from the MacGregor Clan and from my families with their aliases ( mine the Pietrie/ MacGee families) to avoid capture on both sides of my genealogy, I'm naturally biased toward the last alternative involving that dastardly Campbell Clan who were constantly "acquiring" land from the MacGregors. Unfortunately, knowing that we also had a habit of "borrowing" cattle which I might add were not orange at this time, I may have to agree with your first alternative which is to say that we were defending ourselves after going on our usual nightly cattle raids. It seems you don't know what ethnic actually means, ethnicity is more the cultural upbringing associated with ones native national identity. The term 'Native' is a cognate of the term 'Nation', both of which etymologically relate to their derivative form 'Nationality'. 'Ethnicity' (from 'Ethnos') is acquired, for example your native Yank Doodle native accent from America is a part of your native ethnicity as well as your heritage being American as you inherited your American default citizenry (and ethnicity overtime) as a result of your native USian American nationality.

The remaining MacGregors fled eventually settling in Canada, where the battle of the Thames in the war of 1812 was fought on MacGregor land, ( the British called it the battle of MacGregors Mill) the battle was an American victory, where Shawnee Chief Tecumseh was killed, and the British were finally forced out of the Old Northwest Territory, the family later settled at MacGregor Point on the Eastern Shore of Lake Huron where a Provincial Park bears their name, it is from this branch of the family, that my late wife was a decendant, oddly enough both my ex father in law and brother in law share the name of John, and in every generation since his time there has been one male named Rob Roy.

Another good Video Bruce. I'd definitely go for Campbell. Time and time again throughout that period right into the mid 18th century clan Campbell had been on a massive land grabbing spree managing to get rid of all the clans they thought posed them a problem, and in turn using their power in parliament and influence of the law to seize the land from them turning it all in to Campbell land. The more land they own the more tenants they will have paying rents. MacGregor, MacDonald and Stewart of Appin to name a few clans this happened to. That is why there is a Duke of Argyll today that owns so much land and influence.

Group homes, foster homes, juvenile facilities, work ranches, hospitials, etc. Anyway it all seemed normal until we were watching something on the local news that involved a person who was under suspicion of a crime and his name was Campbell. Suddenly the family went nuts and were talking about what a bunch of crumbs the Campbells were. Then they proceded to tell me about the several hundred years feud that they had with them. it didnt even dawn on me that there was no Campbell's soup in the house. i think every house i ever lived in had Campbell's soup but not the Greggs. I thought it was so weird. i lived there about 10 months, one of the more long term places i stayed. They were the most wobderful people i lived with but unfortunately it was a bad time in my life. Anyway all these years later anytime i hear the name Campbell the old juices start flowing and i go into feud mode. lol. We do have campbells soup in our pantry though.

You can't be both American and Scottish in any order as they are two entirely different distinct nationalities/ethnicities over 4,000 long long miles apart across a vast ocean desert in entirely different continents with different cultures, philosophies and perspectives etc. Being one and claiming to be the other undermines both by automatic default. @@geminiii6634 MacGregors held their land by coir a glaive, "right of the sword". They believed that land should be won through battle and held through battle. Mainly, they believed this because nobody could beat them in battle. The Campbells were interested in getting more land and eliminating the threat posed by competitors. At the time, Robert the Bruce, King of the Scots, was doing a rather shady practice of issuing grants for lands that were already inhabited. Rather than battle the MacGregors, which would be suicide, the Campbells bowed to the King, knowing that they would be granted land near Loch Awe and some surrounding lands, which were held by MacGregors. It was basically like a very dastardly and politically motivated sort of land reform. Strong clans were simply unwilling to recognize the authority of a king. Weak clans were willing to collaborate with the king if they were provided these land grants to the lands of stronger clans. The weak clan gets more land, the king effectively has more support, and a strong clan that could put a wrench in the plans of the crown has their lands stripped. If I may... it's like if you had a really weak, poor neighbor who lives in a mobile home, and you live in a mansion. He always talks about how much he likes your house, but he doesn't want to get a job or go steal a house at gunpoint like the rest of us. This neighbor decides that his best shot at getting more land is to convince authority figures to kick you out. He starts jerking off the mayor once a week. One day, after jerking off the mayor for a few hours, the mayor decides to give the neighbor all of his lawyers and send cops to back him up. They all tell you that you're evicted, and your mansion now belongs to your neighbor, pack your bags or we kill you. That's the Campbells. Similar thing happened a couple hundred years later, with the Colquhouns. That time, the Colquhouns stood up to MacGregor, but they were brutally defeated in battle. The King sees it, thinks, "hmm, these people will do anything I say, and this is an opportunity to make the barbaric MacGregors less powerful", but that time, he banned the name itself.

From the stories I read as a child, I had always believed that the outlawing of the MacGregors was due to Rob Roy and their part in the 1715 rebellion. I'm a Sept of the MacGregor clan!! My people landed in North Carolina back in the late 1600's. And, moved their way north to Ohio where I reside.. While, I am a proud citizen of the U.S. And, a veteran of the U.S Army. I love my Scottish heritage! And, have passed that love to my sons. I have ensured they know where they come from and, carry that knowledge of what occurred that made their forefathers leave their homeland to seek fortune in the New World. My blood is royal!!

With MacGregor, Henderson and MacDonald blood running through my veins I can only give one answer: Campbells. Their hegemony was legendary. Greedy lot. James played his crafty part. Thankfully, I am not a proponent of pan-generational guilt.

@@mattevans923 That's correct. I don't blame current generations for the crimes of past generations. Our responsibility is to do the right thing in the here and now. Learn from the past not repeat its mistakes or perpetuate its sins.

Love these stories. It all new to me. Every Campbell I met was of a good sort. Related to many a Conway. I did grow up with a family of MacGregor, I even wonder if they knew their own history. America was good to them. As it has been to my family.

I'm so glad you did this, mate. It is not forgotten or forsaken, it is Forbidden. I don't hate all with the surname Campbell. But as someone who's part Cameron, I believe I have some history in this trouble. It's funny how "Celtic" wars, crimes and conflicts, often involving religious or clan feuds, tend to be chaotic and often mischievous, trouble being a good word for it. God, the 1500s brought in some nasty trends in the world, several of which come from or into Scotland. I can see this "trouble" as featuring witch hunt and imperialist aspects, and I do believe a lot of imperialism in Europe dates to this time. What changed? Why did old feuds turn to ambitions and violence? Why did the MacGregor Clan become a scapegoat? ... Thank you for this. Many do not understand the "landiness" of Scotland or its effect on the people and culture.
