I don't know why they didn't put a "Direction of rotation" arrow on that knob! It just seems like common sense, then again, you want the enemy to turn it the wrong way and damage it. You need to know a lot before working on these things! Nice video :-)
Dear Sir, with all your knowledge, which is impressive, do you think it would be possible to make an instructional video, which explains to people who are not very gifted in electronics how to maintain a PRC-320(L), and how to restore it to the original factory settings? Specifically, is it possible to change the transmit power of each band separately, by turning potentiometer screws somewhere inside the radio? Or is it more complicated than that? Thanks in advance for your expertise.
hi there, I did 3x 320s cap. replacements,The first one went perfect(Addison.) The second(Cynthia) had been replaced with 2x in series 3.3uF@100V so i let them be and replaced the others.Now the third,(Joanne) has been a bit of a rabbit hole, there was no lock just the angy clansman song so i replaced the caps, cyinth. and power board but it didnt work so i looked at the board everything was ok but no 110V so i found the wiring and i thought,,, humm.. the transistor? so i looked for a replacement but some army guy has given notes, and recommends a transistor but its going to be stuffed and so is an "IC" and its a pair and they need to be replaced together....Where to start? do i just get a new "Unit 5"?
Hello Andrew, I have also run into problems just like this. You need to understand that not all of the frequency lock or wobble problems can be repaired by replacing these capacitors. Replacing them is more of a maintenance issue and by changing them other failures like the failure of the 110v can be prevented. It appears this loss of the 110 volts and other supply (unit5) issues is the Achilles heal of the 320. The internett is full of advice on trying to repair the 110V in the 5a unit. Possible failures are shorts in the transformer, rectifier diodes blown, transistors failures and IC failure. Its a pretty complex little up converter. This can be so frustrating to repair in many ways. I would suggest a component check to start and go from there. If this is too much for you I believe repaired exchange units are available in the UK.
Thank you Alex, i did my brothers clansman320 today(14/5/22), mine and my other brothers tomorrow, one thing, the 110v wont go under 114? i cant get any response from the "pot"
Thanks for this video Alex, you explain things so clearly, it's almost like being there with you, having personal tutoring. There is a 320 being advertised here that is described as"howling when turned on". I'm tempted to buy and have a go.
