LSO Animateur Rachel Leach and LSO musicians analyse and perform the first movement of Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 17 - one of the set works on the new Edexcel A & AS Level syllabus.
Great lecture and a super handy tool for revision! Perfect performance as well. As a jazz musician, I couldn't suppress a chuckle when she described extended chords as 'dissonant', however I share her enthusiasm on the Circle of 5ths. Those 7th chord arpeggios in the piano are to die for! Easily my favourite moment in the piece.
An excellent presentation. The players are first class; after all, they are members of the LSO! The second violin especially has an excellent technique with a sound that projects and is warmly expressive. BRAVO! Henley Denmead West Hartford, Ct.
I just realized that your “favorite part” is developed into the pickup to the first subject when it occurs again in the movement. The first subject of the finale, also in sonata form, is a clear sibling of the first subject of the first movement, and the same figure is used as a pickup to the first subject of the finale.
What a great video! Wonderful to have material like this! I wish I was doing my A-levels again :) I would analyse that fantastic chord in bar 83 as a secondary dominant of B-flat from the parallel minor on the F pedal held from bar 73, i.e. C (not in the piano, but clearer from the violin descending arpeggio), E-flat, G-flat (from B-flat minor) and B-flat. But I would probably find it difficult to explain that to me as an A-level student...
Interesting! I admit to loving the pop music of the 1950s, but this is an excellent teaching video! If the general public were more educated in this type of music, they would appreciate it more! Classical music seems to be dying out due to peoples inability to understand it! Thank you! Wish there were more teachings available (starting with the basics).
