U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas delivers the 2016 commencement address at Hillsdale College. See more from Hillsdale's commencement at www.hillsdale....
My God this is so beautiful. I am not a cryer by any stretch of the imagination. This speech has caused me tears because like the Declaration of Independence and constitution has touched my soul. Thank You Justice Clarence Thomas. I remember the attack on your character on national tv by the Democratic senators yet at the end of the day your stellar character won the day. Thank You so much for your service.
A truly great American. He is speaking directly to the young people emphasizing responsibilities, not rights and entitlements. They must contribute as citizens he says. "Following your bliss" is a platitude too often heard at these commencements. Not by this speaker. A very moving address!
Justice Thomas is a national treasure of originalist thought and a stalwart defender of our Constitution and the God given Liberties and Freedoms it protects for all Americans.
I’m glad you grew up on that small farm because, without it, you would not have been the man you are. You used the words ‘responsibility’ and “without it we would have had no food”. That is an understanding that can only be forged out of sweat and sacrifice-two of the principal ingredients that constitute free citizenship.
Justice Thomas gave a true and wonderful speach about our efforts, our Labors, weaving the fabric of liberty and Freedom in our daily lives; of a civil society. He did not mention socialism, feudalism, communism, or populism. He spoke of living life and of individual charity. A life of freedoms, It may require that we give our last full measure, or not; but eventually we will give our last. Will it be for individual liberty ...or will it be for something else, something less? -ljones
Justice Thomas is an international reference. I am a Brazilian lawyer and often I study his opinions. He is a model of judge, father and catholic. God bless him.
I love this man sooo much!!!....may God give him the strength for the days to come... if we modeled our lives after this man we would be a better nation for it
Justice Scalise died alone in a hotel room. There was a rushed cremation without an autopsy. Although he had a known cardiac history, it was typical and common for an autopsy to occur. Strange situation.
This great speech by this great man only goes to reinforce how dangerously warped Obama's worldview truly is. Long live Justice Clarence Thomas and long live conservatism
Conservatives proceed to "conserve" the ideals that made it possible for you, Peter, to bloviate without intellect. Aristocracy constricted freedom, and the principles that conservatives wish to preserve set it free. Read the real history books and stay away from the idiotic talking points given by those who would cloud your own mind with group think and a smorgasbord of shallow, meaningless "rights". In other words, really listen to what Justice Thomas actually said.
@@peterorpaulettekrempely9341 *Aristocracy cannot exist in a place where expression and other rights exist in primacy. "Conservatism"is an ideology consisting solely what it's root entreats: Conserve the word and meaning of the political system our forebears founded. Conserve everything around you - i.e., Waste not, want not. In your case, it would say to conserve those words you don't really understand: nobody can know you are an idiot if you don't advertise it with idiotic statements.*
Thank You Judge Thomas for an amazing speech. You graduates are amongst greatness with this man. You need appreciate however you manage to be at Hillsdale College and thank whomever helped you attend. Good luck to all of you. Please remember what this fine gentleman has said. It will carry you far in life. God Bless America!
"THE ADVICE NEAREST MY HEART AND DEEPEST IN MY CONVICTION IS THAT THE UNION OF THE STATES BE CHERISHED AND PERPETUATED. LET THE OPEN ENEMY TO IT BE REGARDED AS A PANDORA WITH HER BOX OPENED; AND THE DISGUISED ONE, AS THE SERPENT CREEPING WITH HIS DEADLY WILES INTO PARADISE." JAMES MADISON
What can one say after hearing such a meaningful oratory by such a distinguished person. As an Australian, I have the perspective of looking at the United States in 2020 from the outside. With all you have to contend with, you are most fortunate to have such a person in your midst.
Awesome! Justice Thomas is a Treasure! I remember when he was crucified with words. He is a wonderful example for young people of Every ethnicity in America. God Bless Justice Thomas and Thank God he is an American❤
I only wish my kids could have listened to this. I'm going to share share share, but can only pray they might hear this amazing oration. Judge Thomas is in my top 3 people to have dinner with and spend an evening. The other two are dead and one of those appears frequently in the Bible (and actually isn't dead). God bless this man. What an amazing American.
Do the right thing you will have a good life. You won't be ashamed of yourself, your family or country. You are an example for new generations. They sure do need one now days.
Judge Clarence Thomas thank you for sharing your testimony of our United States Constitution. I appreciate your contributions to our liberty. As I am a Senior Citizen I hold fast to the wonderful gifts of our Founding Fathers and their people called upon to bring it to pass. I will do all that I can to give the last full measure of what I can do within my circle of influence. God Bless you and your life.
Associate Thomas is the Epitome of what makes America ...his believe in GOD and country should be a lesson for us all... to love our fellow man. And the expression of free ideas even if we don't agree.we always have the freedom to do what no other country has... free speech.. to learn from our fellow country men. And resolve our differences in a lawful discorce... not hatred . This is what makes our country great. Coming together for a better future....
I NEED FOR JUSTICE STORY TO BE MY JUDGE UPON / OUR COLLECTIVE PERFORMANCE / AND MY MEDIARY , IN GOVERNMENT PERFORMANCE // I STAND IN SUPPORT OF OUR AMERICAN CONSTITUTIONAL CONGRESSIONAL LAWS ; AND I SAY REPEAL THOSE LAWS TO MODIFICATION THAT ARE NOT , JUSTLY RIGHT AND CORRECT. THINK ABOUT THIS / AND DO THAT WHICH IS JUSTLY DUE JUST RIGHT AND PROPER.
The 3 virtues: duty, honor, country. And how does that play out in Assoc. Justice Thomas' friendship with a billionaire? Relying, encouraging, accepting grossly outlandish and undisclosed GIFTS? Personal gifts of private high school tuition for his nephew? The purchase of his mother's home while she still lives there? And the yachts, the private plane trips? And yet more not disclosed to the country he is privileged to serve on the highest court of justice until he dies? Was his buddy Harlan Crow 'discharging his daily duties' to solve Thomas' own 'problems, obligations, and responsibilities'? This liberty-riddled speech is such hypocrisy. Thank you for sharing so I could hear it first-hand.
Racist? Hardly. You don't know me, so don't throw words around that are both false and incendiary. If all you can do is call someone names, you invalidate any arguments you might otherwise make. In my opinion, the fact that this man is occupying Thurgood Marshall's seat on the Supreme Court is an outrage and a travesty. This is MY opinion; make of it what you will.
Sheldon Burnston. Whether you try to wiggle your way or not, you are a racist slimeball. The problem with you is transparent revealing what you are all about. Thomas is a patriotic America loving and Constitution loving judge who is dedicated to texualist interpretation whereas Marshall was a racist, Leftist, living document interpreter as every judge appointed by a Democrat must be. You are a typical lowlife Leftist Marxist America hating, constitution hater. Deny it, but that is going to reveal you to be a liar.
+Sheldon Burnston That seems particularly close minded. Alternative points of view are very healthy for anyone with any intellectual integrity. You missed something powerful and inspiring by not listening to and reflecting upon what he said. Perhaps you would benefit from his thoughts about good citizenship.
Sheldon Burnston. The way of the hate filled leftist Marxist America hating hypocrite who is closed minded and a hater of the Constitution. Go back to your beloved CNN for more brainwashing.
Thomas Jackson Unlike you, I read dozens during law school. His decisions are easily among the most scholarly I've read. Why? Because they are largely based on the Constitution itself. If you have a problem with Thomas's decisions, which you have never read, you must have a problem with the Constitution. (And it is fact that the Left HATES the Constitution for its limitations on the federal government.) Thus far, the only thing you have offered about Thomas is childish insults based on this Marxist idea that if you belong to Group X then ALL the members of Group X must have the same opinions and ideas at all times. AND GOD FORBID you deviate from any of it like Thomas dares to do. He is his own man and should be admired, not insulted.
I question the prestige of the law school you attended. In the Timothy Tyrone Foster case, the court ruled 7 to 1 that Georgia prosecutors had violated the Constitution by improperly considering race when selecting a jury to judge Timothy Tyrone Foster. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote for the majority. Justice Thomas dissented. Which part of his dissent was based on the Constitution that the other eight justices (four of which are conservatives) missed? The problem with you conservatives is that you believe if a ruling favors your cause, then it is based on the Constitution, if not, then it is judicial over-reach or "legislating from the bench," or whatever silly phrases you use. Thomas' dissent on the aforementioned case is that ruling in Mr. Foster's favor would encourage others to bring similar claim. What part of the Constitution denies a person's right to due process because it would encourage others to seek due process? Of course, Thomas' does not recognize blatant racism in the case because it wasn't against him. He never see racism that is not targeted at him. Thomas is one of those minorities that make racists feel good about themselves.
THE LETTERS IN DEEPER EXAMINATION / ARE TO PROVIDE MORE DO JUST RIGHT CAUSE. I AM A SOLDIER IN THE WAR UPON / POVERTY , AND SELFISH ABUSE / BY EMPOWERED OFFICES OF NEGLECT , OR ABUSE.
I am absolutely astounded and stand in awe of Justice Clarence Thomas. I appreciate his upcoming, although I am whte, I too was born and reared in Sumter, South Carolina. We did have electricity, but no bathroom or running water. In the summer we picked cotton for $2.00 per 100 lbs. I made it through High School and joined the US Navy where I served for 13 years and served in Vietnam. I am now retired and get a 40% Veterans disability. God Bless You and God Speed.
