I've found it good to imagine you are saying 'digger' over an over again then make your fingers move twice for every 'd' sound instead of once as with single tonguing.

Hi! I'm a high school first clarinetist in a wind symphony and orchestra who is seriously considering pursing clarinet in university and beyond; our orchestra pieces have become more demanding and learning how to double tongue has helped me so so much! This video gave a lot of good insight about articulation that was really helpful to me. I really admire you as a clarinetist.

Good tutorial - thanks for sharing! I have been double tonguing for years on flute and just recently applied the technique to my clarinet playing. I, too, have found that using it on different notes is better than articulating on one note - your legato tonguing approach is also a great idea! Great video!

Brilliantly explained! I've dabbled in double tonguing on clarinet (after learning about it but not being able to do it on flute) for years. This year I'm learning taragot (tarogato) and the speed at which many Romanian taragot players from the Banat region play makes double tonguing necessary. I had my taragot out while watching this and experimenting with your ideas. Worked great! Now, my only question is: In a week or 2, how much faster will this become? 10-20 metronome clicks? More? (I know a bit of it is based on practice time and quality, but if you could give a general idea I'd appreciate it!)

Hi Alexey! I recently made first chair at my high school and tried out for mid state the for the first time last year and I actually made the band! While I was there though I realized how much better the higher chair players were than other players my age (I'm 16) than I had heard. After watching the movie "Whiplash" I was like "gotta get my crap together" so I started looking up tutorial videos and I found yours. I am totally blown away by hearing you play! I definitely have a lot to work on! (Is it ok to start crying now? Lol) Thank you so much for making this video and I hope to see more videos like these from you in the future! Also, you were talking about a size 5 reed earlier. A size 3 Vandoren is standard at my high school but I'm currently playing on a 3 1/2. Our band director doesn't want us getting higher than that, but what do you think about progressing in reed size or the relevance of it to your level of playing?
@goalexey

DreamBIG224 Thanks a lot! I personally loved "Whiplash". It had its cheesy moments, but overall energy was great in my opinion.

What do you do for altissimo? I find D G works fine in first 2 registers but once I enter altissimo it starts to get much harder, especially above E. The shape at back of mouth seems to interfere with the 'G' production.

hello. thanks for doing this video. one thing i might have missed in the video, when you do the DG articulation, does your tongue touch the tip of the reed? i tried to do a D articulation while also trying to hit the tip of the reed and i had a lot of troubles
@goalexey
@goalexey 9 лет назад
Hey Daniel - yes, D is the regular tongue on the tip of the reed. What I mean by "D" is the tenuto tonguing. Think legato and articulate in such a way so the tongue hitting the reed doesn't disrupt the air much. If you are practicing single tonguing, you can do it on one note. That's how I practiced it before.
@TheRat900

Very nice video! Help me a lot! Maybe its stupid question, but if i can't tell "Da, ga" in very fast way, that means, i can't play it on clarinet so fast? And other question: Is it the matter of tongue how fast we play staccato? Because I think my tongue is very slow and my tongue is very long. Is it matter when I play staccato? Sorry for my english, I am doing my best to improve my english, but its still bad :P Greetings

Hi Alexey, would it be possible to have a single lesson with yourself so I can be sure I'm doing it correctly? Thank you for showing this tutorial. My single tonguing is too slow so I've started practising double tonguing starting at tempo 72bpm to try and get a solid technique before speeding it up, and I'd like to get it checked out before I go any further. With thanks and best wishes.

I don't know how to double tongue, I am trying to learn, by the way. Would you say that going from "T-K" to "D-G" is more of a natural process? I remember when I first learned single tonguing in elementary school, I was taught "t-t-t-t-t", but then I was told to legato tongue and it was hard for me to do. The "t" sound was very harsh for me. Just after years of playing, I naturally developed a "d-d-d-d-d" and a legato tongue. I didn't specifically work on it, it just naturally... "came" to me. To me, the "d" sound is just a much much more delicate and softer form of the "t" sound. Wouldn't you say the same for the "k" and the "g" sound, and that when learning, it's okay to do the "k" sound but just try to make it as soft as possible for the "g" sound? I also find that when I make the "g" sound as soft as possible, sometimes I am "too soft" in that I don't stop any air or cut any air at all, and I end up producing a kind of tremelo.
