The Clark Freeport and Special Economic Zone (CFEZ), often shortened to Clark, refers to an area in Central Luzon, Philippines.
The CFEZ in Pampanga covers portions of the cities of Angeles and Mabalacat and portions of the town of Porac while parts of the area in Tarlac include portions of the towns of Capas and Bamban, Tarlac.
The CFEZ divided into two areas, the Clark Freeport Zone (CFZ) and the Clark Special Economic Zone (CSEZ). The New Clark City is part of the Clark Special Economic Zone. The CFZ covers the area of the former United States Air Force facility, Clark Air Base. Most of this air base was converted to the Clark International Airport and some remained under the control of the Philippine Air Force. Clark Global City is also part of the Clark Freeport Zone.
Clark forms the hub for business, industry, aviation, education, and tourism in the Philippines as well as a leisure, fitness, entertainment and gaming center of Central Luzon.
[History]
In 1898, Clark was first established as a U.S. military camp for the 5th Calvary after the Spanish-American War. The base was first named as Clark Field in 1918, after Major Harold M. Clark, a pre-World War I pilot.
After the Mount Pinatubo eruption in 1991, the air base was shut down. As a result, the base was turned over to the Philippine government on November 26, 1991 and was converted into a free port and special economic zone.
Eventually, on March 20, 2007, the Clark Air Base was renamed to Clark Freeport Philippines under the administration of the then-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. This development allowed investors to enjoy tax-free and other duty-free privileges. Since then, Clark Freeport Zone has attracted a great number of foreign and domestic investors.
