i know we love to hate on Jay sometimes but he is something else. his lyrical cleverness is unmatched. Jay is the king of bars, Biggie is the King of Flows, Nas is the king of story telling. Tupac is the king of passion
Ebony Owens He is from Brooklyn. Enough said. I am from Brooklyn, never putting anyone above Jay and Big. It ain't personal, it just is. like to this day I refuse to listen to pac, it ain't personal, it just is.
Clark Kent says big was writing his rhymes up until brooklyns finest, but easy mo bee said biggie stopped writing his rhymes on paper and was writing his rhymes in his head during ready to die ....kent sounds like he's lying or exaggerating to big up jay
i once read a story that when they met to do this song Jay passed Biggie a notebook to jot down words for his verse, the Bad Boy rapper passed it back and responded that he doesn't write down his lyrics. Jay said that he didn't either, and they got busy
Jay Z tied Big L in a battle which lead to L respecting him, and then they became good friends, and so Big L took Jay around to radio stations and other places to help put him on. When Big L died in 99 he was preparing to sign to Rocafella, and Jay has shouted him out numerous times since then and wrote about L in his book. Yet Big L fans for some reason think it's cool or somehow in Ls defense to shit on Jay. Fyi, when L died Jay already had albums more successful and more critically acclaimed than L who sadly only had one project that didn't do very well and wasn't very good. If you don't think that Jay is at least as good as Big L (Jay's clearly better), then ita because you either hate Jay for being successful, or you're enamored with Big L for being an underground MC who was killed. Lupe Fiasco had an excellent tweet the other day explaining just why Jay is a better and more varied rapper than Big L. (Also, the Freestyle argument is the dumbest fucking argument ever, in no universe is a single track indicative of any significant lack or skill or superiority over any artist, in, anyone's career, period, you want a legit argument? Compare their damn tracks and not a freestyle kids who just heard about Big L use to hate on Jay Z just because they're hipsters.)
Hussein kanteh Jay-Z never wrote his rhymes because he had no pen and paper when he was out in the streets. Jay was rapping from young and was hustling starting at 14 so that's a lot longer than what you'd think
I'm a Nas fan, grew up on Marcy right around the corner from Jay and I still always fucked with Queens lyricists. I could relate to their shit more. I had to grow up to respect Jay Z and his skills. Oh and Jay was all over Bk, normal ass man. He probably got a few kids in their 20s now that he won't claim
MAJOR PROPS DJCLARKKENT!!!! His Vision Saw Greatness Personified In The Future....Thats Vision & Told Have 2 Major MCs & Was Fair 2 Both.. Salute!!!! Stand-up Dude
for me biggie is one of the greatest of all time the only thing is big only got two lp's but is still the shit and what would it be if He would be still alive.......
Does anyone know what happened with Vlad and Foxy Brown? He barely (or ever) asks questions about her, and Clark is her cousin and put her on "Aint No Nigga". Other videos I noticed the same thing. Or if Vlad if you read this could you respond, just curious
Loved the interview learned a lot would love to meet the immortal Dj Clark Kent. But I wanna know how Jay and Big met thru Clark Kent when they went to high school together? Explain Kent Explain? 🤔🤔
Biggie started NOT writing down his lyrics with Juicy on Ready to Die. This is before he ever met Jay-z. Jay-z admit he like to record in person with artists rather than recording tracks solo because he found out Biggie didn't write down his rhymes either when they recorded Brooklyn's Finest together. Here is DJ Primer talking about how he EYE WITNESS Biggie NOT writing his lyrics BEFORE he ever met Jay-z. WATCH HERE: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AhiZcpBwiqQ.html Jadakiss talked about witness this. I'm sure Jay-z realize for certain Biggie was the greatest once he realized not only is he that ill, but HE'S NOT WRITTING THIS DOWN! Biggie is THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME.
Listen Everyone's entitled to their opinion but Clark Kent really just said more than once tupac DID NOT have any dope bars did he not there 2Pacalypse Now Makaveli 7 day theory me against the world strictly 4 my niggaz like come on people diss Pac when it comes to lyricism but haven't even took in our time to just listen to his much Pac is just as good as a Nas jay big pun etc he just chose to dumb down his lyrics sometimes and there's nothing wrong with that
@Jamaal Davis It IS a debate goody. That's wut we're doing. Every rapper builds on predecessors influence/impact. Even Face says on the track..."I grew up on Krs-1 & Rakim...Bi*ch YOU GREW UP ON ME!" That's kool. & everyone has predacessors. KRS-1 career is longer than face's. But even Chris will tell you his body of work isn't all phenomenal. He also believes theirs no one living but Nas he could do a verzuz w/. & puts Nas as greatest MC. You call my opinion an opinion...& Yours a fact. Wtf? Stop it. Face can't fu*k w/ B.I.G. despite influencing his art. & i love the guy. But Notorious was next level & Special. Throw out Face's best story & I'll throw out BIGS..Let's see who wins. ..
@Jamaal Davis Bruh...You wrote like 15 separate disjointed & contradicting statements. I'm going to come back & break ur sh*t down & fu*k your bullsh*t arguments up when I get a moment. This is more than hilarious. Don't edit them either. Right now they are unmolested. Let them sit as is.... I'll be back.
@Jamaal Davis Nah...you have FACTS remember?? My sh*t is all opinion. We'll get to it when i sit back down & can digg into the dumb sh*t you wrote. All good.
Jay is the nicest mc. I've had a hard time with that because Rakim for years was the greatest. Nas is on the Mt Rushmore of MCs but I've heard Jay say the most incredible bars plus it don't sound like he rapping it's like he talking to you.face it yo Jay changed the game factz.
GREED WITH ENVY ... THE GREEN TEMPTS ME... TO MAKE THE RICH THE ENEMY AND TAKE THEY CHEESE ... TAKE THEY SPOTS ... TAKE THEY KEYS ... MAKE MY FACULTY LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER IN LAUGHTER
Remember! In Russell Simmons “The Show” movie, Puff Yelled Out “Clark Kent One Time” and Biggie Goes “Uh!!!” Me And My Bitch On The Computer Love Beat.
I CAN CO SIGN THAT I NO THAT NOBODY THAT SEE THIS COMMENT KNOWS ME BUT I USED TO HANG WITH CLARK KENT ... HE USED TO SAY IF HE HAD A LABEL ETC. HE WOULD SIGN THIS GUY NAMED JAY-Z I WAS A BUYER AT TOWER RECOREDS W.4TH ST AT THE TIME WE USED TO TALK MUSIC ETC ALL THE TIME
Bender Veloso C.R.F that's really debatable.. I will say this about each MC.. & yes all 3 are in my opinion to be considered MC's. Nas has always made dope street music but what sets him apart from Jay & Big is his ability to spip some knowledge & positive shit in a lot of his music. Big's flow, clarity in his voice, delivery & story telling was crazy & he always had raw street shit. Jay had something a little different & for a long time I just was like this nigga the best rapper. But Jay had an ability to adapt to situations & deliver from life experience AND build from inspiration as well. & Jay could delivery some conscious shit too. Cuts like meet the parents, minority report, that joint with Lenny Kavits called Guns and roses produced by heavy d, all showed me yo,, okay Jay had range & is an MC. As a fan I would fantasize about being Nas or Jay giving them rhymes.. when every I heard Big I would just shake my head in amazement.. like omg!! Too fucking raw.. pause.. hard as fuck.. jus plan dope..
Jay is a much more skilled punchline rapper, has better metaphors, and better entendres among other non solely rhyming based clever aspects of rhyming. Nas only has one album (Untitled), where he shows skill in that regard over the course of his entire career.
Aaron Carter hov jack of all trades master of nine maybe entendres. Nas is more on the imagery storytelling syllable side. Nas metaphors are crazy too.
the only person who outshines Jay on a song verse to verse bar to bar was Big L. Big L’s flow was nice and his punchlines were treacherous! just listen to the Stretch & Bobbito show 95 freestyle, L was just on another level ahead of hov.
A myth dat em verse was betta not tru..jay 2 nd verse on renegade meant more 2 me den that wrdplay raps em was doin..b4 said that b.s nobody was saying em bodied jay on dat track...gtfoh....😏😏😏
JERU IS A GOD MC BUT HE WAS JUST MAD THAT DIDDY MADE BIGGIE SMOOTH OUT HIS REMIXES TO GET THE LADIES AND THE BILLBOARDS. HE WAS HATIN BASICALLY. CAUSE ALL THE ALBUM STUFF STILL HAD HARD, GUTTER TRACKS ON THEM. HE WANTED BIG TO STAY DUSTY AND ASHY LIKE HIM.
ALBERT EINSTEIN being clean doesn't mean you have knowledge or the people's best interest at heart.. Nor does it mean you speak truth.. The kardashians are clean but are the dirtiest inside.. Just saying.. Facts. Salute the truth.
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ? WHO SAID ANYTHING ABOUT KNOWLEDGE ? AND WHAT MAKES YOU SAY THE KARDASHIANS ARE THE DIRTIEST INSIDE ? WHAT MAKES THEM SO DIRTY ?
Kushion It NA, NA, MY G. EXPLAIN YOUR STATEMENT. OTHERWISE YOU CLEARLY ARE THE FOOL. YOU THINK THE KARDASHIANS ARE ANY MORE DIRTY INSIDE THAN YOU ? HUMBLE YOURSELF. WE ALL HAVE SOME DIRT. THEY ARE JUST EVERYDAY HUMAN BEINGS. EVERYTHING GETS MAGNIFIED BY THE CAMERA. DONT BE FOOLED. ITS ALL A MIRAGE.
phrsh293 lol. You been saying that since pajamas with the feet in em...old pretend dad having ass nigga. Don't tell niggas goodnight either. THAT sounds gay...tell ya pretend TeddyDad what up doe
phrsh293 pay homage ...Clark Kent IS Hip Hop....a living legend....he opened doors for damn near everybody....he has produced more classics than any producer U know or can name....Clark is qualified to talk this shit....like it or not....this is Hip Hop history being cited ...this is clarification....Big was in awe of Jay Z....Big stopped writing rhymes Because of Jay Z....Jay a real one and embraced Big IMMEDIATELY AND PUT HIM IN HIS VIDEO A DAY AFTER MEETING HIM....mind U Biggie all over tv and radio....these are the FACTS....two giants in this hip hop shit....Jay laid his verses in minutes....it took Big 2 months....them bars shook Biggie up.....Jay never changed his verses....Big Respected Jay and them bars....FACTS....and Clark ain't shutting on Nas.....this a Jay Z and Biggie story....no need to mention Nas or Pac or any other artist....CLARK KENT HELPED NAS AS WELL AT THE BEGINNING OF HIS CAREER.....and I'm sure Clark is gonna say Nas is a phenom....but this ain't that....this a Big an Jay story....Jay is nasty....Jay is that guy....has been from the start and was destined for greatness....DESTINED!!!!!! BIG N PAC DYING OR LIVING HAS NOTHING TO DO WIT THE METEORIC RISE OF HOV AND WHERE HE IS AS A MOGUL....ICON....LEGEND....PHENOM OVERALL
The best rapper is the one who does the best recording in a studio, an MC (Master of Ceremonies) is the one who does the best entertaining a live crowd. Jay Z and Biggie were great rappers but not great MCs. IMO DMX was a better MC then the both of them. His live show is NUTS!
Dope story. If Big and Jay would have made an album...shit would have been crazy. Could you imagine, the locks, beans, Freeway, Bleek, DMX, Big Pun, making guest appearances, doing hooks, with Kanye, Premier, Large Prof, Swizz Beats, Just Blaze, producing tracks? It would have been GAME OVER.
Krzysztof TRIGGER WARNING: brooklyns finest is extremely overrated. The beat is just too busy and distracting. And Jay and Big drop some mediocre verses by their standards. With some really mehhhh punchlines that they seem overly proud of. "If my bitch had twins she'd probably have 2pacs..... Get it, 2pacs?" Uh, yeah I got it the first time big, it wasn't subtle. "Like short sleeves I bear arms" - it's just an average throwaway line that Jay seems so hyped on himself for. However, "I love the dough" was a fucking classic home run banger. Brooklyns finest was like a practice throwaway track IMO.
I meant Jay z in 1997 in Brooklyn him and Dame was at a shoe store in Brooklyn I have the pic we took together!! I didn’t know who he was at the time!! Lol
People are so polarizing. B.I.G., Nas, and Jay are all nice. Jay's ability to not write and still sound amazing is top notch. He was able to spit introspective street tales while still appealing to pop audiences. Not to mention, he was one of the first artist to slow down his flow in an era that everyone was rhyming fast (ala Das Efx) including himself. Nas is a dope as writer who paints pictures. His ability to be conscious one moment and gritty the next is bar none. He took Rakim torch to another level. I say this because Ra never had the same commercial success Nas did. Although, Ra did have some big records (to the ole headz I remember 86-91)... B.I.G. was an ill storyteller and put words together like no other. "I Got a story to tell" is one of my favorite Big songs. He made it cool to be Big, Black, and Cool, which help to launch the success of Rick Ross. Kudos to all them brothers. They are all great in their own way. Much Love!
Jay wasn't one of the first artist to slow down his flow back in that era. Granted, Jay started off fast-flipping and slowed it down, but most rappers back then kept it basic with exception for a handful of rappers who fast-flipped as compared to just flowing. Style is everlasting; gimmicks are generally short-lived. (Fast flipping and speed rap are two different things - Das. Bones Thugs, early Jay et al fast-flipped; Kool G Rap, Big Pun et al speed rap). Rah was basically boxed-in as a conscious artist once hip-hop became thugged-out and vulgarity was the norm. I agree that Nas basically took Rah's influence to another level. When Nas first came out, he was hyped as a wonder child and lived up to expectations. I remember when his name started to ring and was featured by Ralph McDaniels. Dude blew up quick. And yes, BIG made being big, black, and cool to be be real cool. RIP to my homie. I met him in a weed spot on Clifton Place and he made sure I was good when I passed through St. James and the Ave; and I made sure he was good on my block across from LG. I miss him and think about him everyday. He was a really good dude.
I remember first listening to Reasonable Doubt when it dropped in 96' with my uncle and him saying "I don't like him, he sounds like he's talking and not rapping" Back then, it was all about flowing and Jay did not have the standard flow of that era, especially after leaving Jaz-O. He sounded like he was talking to you and conversing. This is what I'm trying to convey.
QuanThaGod I agree. I wasn't feeling Jay at all when he first came out, particularly when I heard him with Jaz on the Originators. That being said, he turned a corner by the time he dropped Reasonable Doubt. There's some real joints on that album, including A'int No N--- that blew-up on the radio and is arguably the song that solidified his early status in NYC. And yes, on Reasonable Doubt, he did create a rhyme pattern what was distinctive from most other artists. He painted pictures on that album in a conversational manner that you describe, that he polished on In My Lifetime Vol I. Jay's first three albums are a measure of his growth. By the time he dropped Big Pimpin' on his fourth joint, he completely placed the game on smash as an artist and was knee-deep as a business man.
***** It's funny you mention that track, because that song blew him up nationally. Not long after that track, he was pictured in the audience during a Knick's game broadcast, and was officially "that dude." That song was definitely a game changer in a lot of ways.
***** No doubt. After he did Big Pimping, I started listening to UGK and 8ball & MJG. I was already listening to the Geto Boys and Outkast. By '98, the south really started to rise and the "sound" of hip-hop began to shift slowly but steadily to the southern influence.
Dope interview...I don't have no problem with people saying Biggie was the greatest lyricist at all time. Jay Z and Nas are definitely dope MCs. Lloyd Banks is one of the most underated. Outside of the greats like Rakim, Kane, and AZ. Pac is the greatest rap artist of all time.
Ronald Green Lloyd Banks isn't motivated enough to get noticed though. He's sick and gifted as fuck but he isn't motivated to put himself out there. He had all the chances in the world
Yeah that's true...it's a shame to because Banks been consistently making good music his whole career. He just doesn't have the star quality. I think it's because h. e expect 50 to do everything for him. But that new ALL OR NOTHIN project is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. "Insomniac"
Reggie Martin I hear you but the way he does it, if you don’t know biggie’s bars you would NEVER know and just think the bars were Jay’Z’s. I know on the Black album he said “I say a BIG verse, I’m only bigging up my brother”, but it doesn’t come across that way. It comes across as stealing cos he doesn’t even mention Biggie’s name at all when he uses Biggie’s bars, not even in the adlibs. He could at least say “like the great BIG said” or “my man BIG would say” or something! So new hip hop fans know he’s using Biggie’s bars and he’s actually truly giving homage. Like on the song “Niggaz in Paris” when he stole Biggie’s wordplay with the name Michael and “anyone Tyson, Jordan, Jackson” and Jay-z flipped the wordplay a little and used “Mike” instead.
I love interviews with DJs and producers that worked with legendary artists bc these guys get the true essence of their greatness. You have to take their assessments and opinions very seriously bc these cats know what they're talking about. Like a football coach knows their best players or most valuable - it's never the fan favourites. And I wish hiphop fans appreciate their legends a bit more instead of obsessing about who's better than whom and top five or other pointless shit. A lot of fans disrespect Jay z and think he's some average MC that is overrated when evidence points to the contrary. Enjoy the music and the artist while they're here. Peace.
