Jazz trumpeter Clark Terry (1920 - 2015) talks about what Quincy Jones learned from Count Basie: the utilization of space and time. Terry gives examples of how Basie led his band's rhythm section and influenced the classic by trumpeter/composer Neal Hefti, "Li'l Darlin'." This film outtake is an original interview for American Masters - Quincy Jones: In the Pocket (2001).

Basie was one of the coolest on the planet and part of that was his absolute mastery of space and time that identifies his minimalist style. What he played was as significant as what he left out! Thank you Clark Terry.

Li'l Darlin' . . . Basie was correct. Almost every tune has a "best" meter and sometimes we don't realize it until we try it. Some tunes work pretty well at several time signatures but they still need to be played at their optimum or best meter to show their full beauty.

hot damn, this man is difficult to understand. It's not even cause he has a thick accent or anything... he is mumbling SO hard... he just refuses to articulate ANY SOUND, he's just almost completely unintelligible, holy hell

Marques Carroll Good point! Only the adept themselves can grasp an icon like Clark Terry. Genius at its best. I remember another great Aretha Franklin performing MUMBLES before an audience with him. Fabulous!
