Today we will be visiting Clarksburg, WV. This amazing little town is full of history and charm. Don't miss it!
Clarksburg is a city in Harrison County, West Virginia, which is located in the north-central region of the state. It was formed in 1785 and was named for general George
Rogers Clark who conducted many expeditions against the British and Indians during the Indian Wars and the American Revolution. There are many historical buildings with rich architecture that date back to before the civil war, be sure to take time to walk around the historic downtown on west main and pike street. In 1824 Thomas J Jackson, aka Stonewall Jackson was born in a house on the main street, just across from the courthouse. Stonewall Jackson's statue is located right in front of the courthouse along with the immigrant statue showing the diverse make-up of the population in the area and honoring the immigrants that helped to build the community. The city is extremely proud of it's Italian heritage. It hosts one of the largest Italian heritage festivals in the US.
Before driving to Jackson's Mill, we decided to stop at stonewall coffee house. It’s in the ally way right by the court house.
Jackson's mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's a well-preserved early grist(葛瑞st) mill, and is the boyhood home of Stonewall Jackson.
Colonel Edward Jackson, a Revolutionary War figure, originally settled the mill on the West Fork River in the 19th century. After Edward's death, his son, Cummins Jackson took over the mill.
After His brother Jonathan Jackson died from typhoid(它pho也德) fever in 1826, His widow struggled to provide for their two kids Thomas and Laura. In 1830, she arranged the young Thomas and Laura
to live with their uncle. Thomas lived here until leaving for West Point in 1842.
To get a better feel for the area we met up with Tina, the local tourism director for the city. Let’s ask her some questions
About 30 miles away from downtown Clarksburg, is the town of Weston, The West Virginia Museum of American Glass is located here.
The collection starts from the 19th century and goes all the way through to present time. It includes about 18,000 pieces of virtually every type of American glass. Be sure to check out the Lady Jane glass doll house ,they have on display as well.
Not far from the glass museum is the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. This will be our final stop. It was in operation from 1864 to 1994. It was made in the Gothic Revival (rei/vi wo)and Tudor Revival styles by the architect Richard Snowden Andrews. Construction lasted from 1858 to 1881. It was originally designed to hold 250 people, but became overcrowded by the 1950s with 2,400 patients. It was closed in 1994 due to changes in laws governing mental patient treatment. I can image the caged souls yelling in the chilled night and crawling through the thick walls. I can't help but shiver thinking of even one night in this dark prison of souls. I left with many feelings, No matter if you love the architecture, or are scared to death of it, like the song by Kansas says, all we do crumbles to the ground though we refuse to see. We didn’t see anything too strange while visiting the asylum, but as we sat on the bench, we saw the lights flap on and off for hours into the night…

My Family is from Clarksburg WV and settled this area prior to the civil war. It is amazing to me to see your video, as you have asked good basic questions not seen on the internet about Harrison county. It is a beautiful place, and not renowned for culture, but as you have seen from the museum in Weston and the architecture of the Harrison county courthouse, from 1920-1960 it was a booming and creative city! Thank you for creating this video and visiting!

I was born and raised in Clarksburg, my first job was at Jackson mills when I was 16. My grandfather lived up the road about 10 minutes away. That coffee shop in Clarksburg used to be a pool room.They used to kick me out of there when I was 14, u had to be 16 to play pool. Lol I'm now 74 and live in SC , I still shoot pool and visit home every now and then. Love my wv and my people, it will always be home no matter where I live. I'll always be a hillbilly and proud of it. God bless u all and God bless WV

It's quite a contrast between Arizona and West Virginia, but both places have their charm. I love the Southwest as well. Should be some future videos coming from that part of the country.

Many Italians emigrated to Clarksburg in the early 1900s, including my aunt with her husband and children and have remained there forever. Many went to work in the coal mines.

@Gary Keith I'm not trying to be mean, but is the drug problem really as bad as I've read here in 🇫🇮? I wish not.
@GarKeith
@GarKeith Год назад
@Pekka Ollila no it is extremely exaggerated, in my opinion. Our people expect this to be Mayberry, and it is not. However, we do not have near the drug problem that some people seem to think we do. We do not have a well traveled population that understands how bad some places have it. They are a little bit sheltered.

@@pekkaollila8505 The population is quite small in West Virginia, so something like the drug problem can look much bigger than it is when looking at it per capita. West Virginia is a beautiful and unique place, don't miss out on seeing it.

Loved the festival when I was at Salem in the early 80s. Good food and friendly atmosphere. Always a great start to the school year. Back then you could drive for miles and not see anything but country until you ran into the Meadowbrook mall or Clarksburg /Morgantown or Fairmont. Changed alot.

I grew up in Clarksburg and in middle school we would get "rewarded" with good behavior by getting to go on the Clarksburg historic walking tour and eat lunch at a park right by the Clarksburg fire dept. but I will say as someone from Clarksburg,, Stonewall Jackson might be a part of of our history but he truly is not a significant part of our history and I am not sure why he is so amplified. He doesnt represent what Clarksburg stands for or for the union history Clarksburg has. Clarksburg was the first place in WV to start a union base and it became extremely important during the civil war, which by far is more important than someone being born there and then being a traitor. It also represents us as a community and not just Clarksburg's but West Virginia's history of coming together and sticking up for one another in times of unjust. like the Coal Miners war that happened in WV. the pepperoni roll was also created by Italian immigrant coal miners wives because they did not always have a lot of time for lunch and needed something that could travel into the mines well but also be held with one hand and boom pepperoni roll was formed and would be a better statue in front of the court house lololol I feel like my comment seems negative but I do not mean it that way! just sharing Clarksburg's history from how I have been taught it. I loved this video and loved that you went and asked questions. Clarksburg, like a lot of Appalachia has a very intricate, long, deep history that is sometimes overlooked or misunderstood due to the hardships we face now. I hope everyone you met was friendly and you had the best time
