Clash Editor-in-Chief, Simon Harper, in conversation with Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts from The Rolling Stones to discuss the upcoming No Filter 2018 tour of the UK and Europe.
Big loss for lifelong Stones fans! So many wonderful shows over 50 yrs and 38 shows. RIP Charlie , Condolences to the Watt's family , know his memory will be a blessing ❤️💔❤️
They're the part of the Rolling Stone's Cadre that isn't the core(the Glimmer Twins) but is vital to the band's smooth operation. Since Bill Wyman was something of an outsider, and the new bassist is "the new guy," the 4 older Rolling Stones are the main attraction - and they're often photographed that way. Woody and Charlie often could avoid the most assertive of the paparazzi and they could grin at the times when Keith and Sir Mick were bedeviled by the media flacks. I think also that they both take their music work quite seriously and they're both trying hard here to do a good interview but still have some fun with it. It's endearing to see Woody keep looking to Charlie to see if he's gone too far or not, like Charlie is the big brother here. I'm SO glad you posted this.
Lovely to see the affection Ronnie has for Charlie. Little hand touches throughout the interview. Always a look to Charlie to lead the answers. That’s pure affection and pure respect.
I think what really comes across is woodys respect for Charlie he keeps looking at Charlie to make sure his comments are OK, it's like it's his father figure. Charlie commands the respect of all the band but with woody being the younger member that respect is massive to see its that obvious.
I can't stop checking out Charlie Watts interviews Charlie Watts footage anything to do with Charlie what's that man was the heart of the Rolling Stones
Fuck that British shit. HUMAN BEING. Is all that matters. Let's not forget what you people tried to do to us. And we kicked your ass. British gentleman? Find another adjective dummy.
Ronnie and Charlie were very good friends from what I hear. Ronnie is super bummed out about his passing...not that everyone in the band isn't. Charlie seemed comfortable around Ronnie. It's probably easier doing an interview with Ronnie...not having to talk over the top two Stones. These two both seem super easygoing.
Keith once scheduled a rehearsal with the late keyboard player of the Stones.Unfortunately he had a heart attack and died before he could show up to the rehearsal. Keef says that when Charlie heard the news, he called him and said : "Keith are you still waiting for Ian?" Keith said "Yes"and Charlie calmly replied "Well, he is not coming"
Charlie said he’s a simple drummer. Humble man. If you’ve seen them live, he’s a force to be reckoned with. Stones don’t sound like the Stones without Charlie.
I don’t like Steve Jordan’s drumming. No offence to Steve, but Charlie was the best for them. He was Jazz. It somehow gelled, miraculously with Stones music.
His style fit in perfectly for whatever style the song was. He never over did it playing louder than what the song needed. He was the perfect to use Ronnie's term, engine.
Ronnie’s modesty is charming, and his respect for - and deference to - Charlie Watts is wonderful to see. What a fantastic interview. RIP Charlie Watts.
I saw in an interview years ago that Charlie was always a responsible big brother figure to the band. From the beginning, he was the most accomplished musician and the most tightly wired. He didn't have any addictions and was very geared towards the music. Charlie came from a jazz background where the drummer runs the band, he took that role very seriously even to the point where he punched Mick in the face for saying "my drummer" then saying "you are my fucking singer."
@@crlaw75 but I'm sure Mick deserved it. Love Mick yet he's way too full of himself. Great frontman yet his albums on his own weren't all that great. Mick don't like talking yesterday which also seems typical of Mick. Charlie is the romantic one.
@@crlaw75 but from that incident Mick found he had a whole new respect for Charlie because he'd finally asserted himself as a vital member of the group. Up until then Mick probably thought Charlie wasn't bothered about the Stones and would leave the moment a position in a jazz band became available.
@@orilliaphil6430 no less in a 3 piece suit lol "Watts reportedly got up, shaved, dressed in a suit, put on a tie and freshly shined shoes, descended the stairs, and punched Jagger in the face, saying: "Never call me your drummer again. You're my fucking singer!" "
I think the main reason Charlie gets such a big and prolonged cheer when he's introduced on stage is that everyone knows he'd probably rather be somewhere else...but he does it for the fans. And the fans genuinely appreciate it because they know that without Charlie there is no band called the Rolling Stones.
Charlie Watts, a magnificent, organic man. Nothing artificial, just a beautiful heap of well-matured, self-effacing banter covering a deeply rooted love of life and appreciation for all those that have inspired him.
Whatever they are both drinking came out of a bottle…..Charlie poured his off camera but he had a glass bottle at the beginning of the video. Water? Maybe…..maybe not
He's always been like this. I forget if it was Richards or Glyn Johns ( producer ) said that is the studio Charlie just stands there and doesn't say anything for hours. But when he does say something, everyone stops and listens. The band loves him, the band respects him and the band listens to him.
Charlie Watts was never the most flashy drummer. He wasn't known for the frenzied solos of Cream's Ginger Baker, or for placing explosives in his kick drum like The Who's Keith Moon. Instead, he was the subtle, stoic heartbeat of The Rolling Stones for almost 60 years. We all Brazilian fans will miss Charlie. RIP 🇧🇷
@Robbie Dawson Agreed. As much as Mick's voice and Keith's guitar, Charlie Watts's snare sound is the Rolling Stones. When Mick sings, 'It's only rock 'n' roll but I like it,' Charlie's in back showing you why!
Fantastic! I love that Charlie isn't playing the game, trying to be professional about it. He is just himself, no agenda. Beautiful!!! Love it. Such a breath of fresh air.
So easy to see how Charlie stayed married to one woman. Very easy going and such a beautiful man. I think Charlie was very deep and real. Nothing pretentious or on any ego trip. Brilliantly talented drummer that's so damn humble. I can't help not still tearing up knowing Charlie's gone off to another universe now. Charles Robert Watts (2 June 1941 - 24 August 2021) RIP Darling Charlie.
Mr. Charlie Watts-"The Engine of The Rolling Stones. All Class. 0.39 his comment on Keith, so funny but spot on. Guy beat throat cancer in 2004 and never told anyone. Watts is a LEGEND.
YES HE DID AND HE IS THE ENGINE ,ALSO PICKED DARRYL JONES TO REPLACE THE GREAT BILL WYMAN,AND WHAT A CHOICE THAT WAS, THE ENGINE B.B.C.IS AND HAS STAYED IN FINE TUNE,DONT KNO6 HOW HE DOES IT,LET HIM PUNCH YA,THEN YOU WILL KNOW,HA HA,GREAT INTERVIEW THE ROLLING STONES ARE THE BEST,OTHERS AIN'T CLOSE,WEAVING, YOU HAVE TO LISTEN, CHARLIE KNOWS, THEY ALL DO,Walter B,Memphis 😝☠😎🤩😋
Absolutely love the way these two interact with each other. The respect and care Ronnie in particular shows towards Charlie is just awesome. Carry on Boys, carry on.
Charlie has the driest of British humour. Hes so humble and says it how it is. Wish he gave more interviews back in the day. Just finished watching and Charlie is such an amazing and interesting person to listen to.
Ha Charlie hates both FB and Twitter, gotta love him. Twitter canceled my account for quoting and posting music and lyrics of a Ramones' song. Months later got an email to sign back on so I grabbed that opportunity to tell them to go FT
@@rickmark9625 As soon as FB announced on my feed face recognition to make it easier to find my friends, I said thank you for the heads up took all my pics down and haven't been back going on 4 years I think. And you are right all social sites are personal information pirates. They sell all your personal information to marketing list compilers and brokers. Bad enough the FTC doesn't enforce the "do not call list." Unless I'm driving and need it, I always turn off my location and blue tooth.
Guys, I have been thinking and listening, the stones, the remaining members of famous bands of the 50's and 60's, I want to say to any people who have had famous moments, thank you for everything. Every song I have ever heard and liked, every moment I have taken away in my heart. I want to thank you for every memory. I'm getting older, so the memories I have are getting longer, the soundtrack to my life has been provided by so many people. Rockers, punks, chart music, the b sides. I want to say, from a fan of music, thank you so much for everything. Cheers.
@Ronnie Wood Hey Ronnie speaking of supporting you I was just thinking I've seen you 5 times over the years. Twice with the Faces and then with the Stones. First time I seen you was at the Eastown in Detroit. Lots of fond memories :-) Peace
These are just two neighbourhood blokes, chatting & laughing away like a couple of dart players at the pub! God bless 'em. Charlie dresses exactly like that retired gentleman a couple of doors down.
I had to beg an Auntie for the, ‘ Flowers’ album because my Mom forbade me listening to the Rolling Stones. I was 10 years old. My Auntie got the album for me for Christmas!
What great mates. Ronnie will miss Charlie so much. Notice how they touch one another all the time and lean in towards one another. A great friendship.
I'd just turned nine when I first saw the Stones on the Ed Sullivan Show in October 1964. Only saw them live once: June 2019, Chicago's Soldier Field. So glad we could see Charlie that last summer that he would be onstage. Big crowd response to this much loved man. We miss him. His music will live.
@@mousearebec Not that Charlie ever really projected "rock star," but he seems to have discarded all traces of the trappings musicians of the era used to favor. He seems like a very pragmatic and unpretentious guy.
Great interview to see these two together. You can tell they're just regular guys who find it crazy their success got to the level it did. RIP Charlie, a true class act with the driest sense of humour. What a legend.
Love these guys! Sure Keith and Mick get the attention but to me all of them are equals to me. These types of musicians are very rare and sadly aging. We all are aging but if only we could wind back the clock about 40 years for all of them.
Good interview. These two are gems. Love their points of view. Ronnie has a great sense of humor. Charlie is clever and so intelligent, Charlie with so much class.
Mick once introduced Charlie Watts as HIS drummer... Charlie Watts got up & physically whacked him saying : "you are MY singer"... He & Bill Wyman were cutest & Brian Jones...R.I.P.
thank you indeed. I bust every 'drummer' who shrugs Charlie as all sorts of boring drummer shite. I always retort, and who are you, a famous drummer? haha
So many young people diss this band as being nothing but old, out of place fogies that have nothing to tell them. They have no clue just how rebellious and "dangerous" the Stones were back in the day. Funny part is, as controversial as many of today's biggest artists are, they STILL will, most likely, NOT be talked about in 100 years. The Stones WILL.
Mark Porter Their best days are certainly in the past but The Who smashing their equipment, Ozzy biting the head off a bat, The Beatles rooftop concert, Hendrix at Woodstock, Queen at Live Aid and Stones at Altamont will go down in rock history
And, of the bands you listed, which one is the best representation of their old selves? Since half of that list are dead, it falls on The Who to carry the mantle best. I love the Stones but it’s getting close to their shelf code. The Who are still firing on all cylinders although Daltrey IS showing more of the effects of age on his singing abilities. Townsend, not so much. He’s still potent as always. Zack Starkey is a PERFECT fit for the band! It’s kind of a moot point as almost all of our greatest classic rock bands are either dead or have been replaced with clones.
@@markpr73 yes you are right. I saw The Who in Sydney with Pino Palladino on bass who Needless to say, had big shoes to fill, and performed adequately with Starkey in support. I also thought the comeback concert by Led Zep at the O2 in London was superb, although that itself was 13 odd years ago.
Mark Porter The Who is certainly one of the best live bands but they are understandably not even close to their best days. Have seen them 4 times with all three of drummers and the biggest difference in the band now as opposed to the first time I saw them with Moon, is the energy level, but I get it because mine isn’t it is was either
YES CHARLIE IS A POWERFUL ENGINE, AND CAN YOU IMAGINE THE FORCE HE PLAYS WITH,HE IS SMASHING AND CRASHING THOSE DRUMS,CYMBALS, BACK BEAT CHARLIE, NOBODY CAN DO WHAT. HE DOES AT 40 YRS,OLD,NOW HE 89 OR REAL CLOSE TO IT MAN,NOBODY HAS THE BACK BEAT SWIMG OF CHARLIE WATTS THAT. SWING,Walter B,Memphis 😊🥰🤩😎❤😍☝️
AWESOME interview! 👏👏👏👏👏Thanks so much for sharing! God, how I LOVE these two!😍😍 I mean, The Glimmer Twins are wonderful, of course, but these two are my personal favorites. I especially love how they interact with each other with the closeness and familiarity of long-time friendship and mutual love. Hope the current tour extends to L.A. one last time. STONES RUUUUUULE!!!! 💋💋💋💋💋💋
I know we just can't help it, just seeing the gentleman Charlie brings a tear to the eye . Never mind he wants them to play on, carry on lads he is with you in Spirit. RIP Charlie.
Ronnie is always a classic. But Charlie is just a treasure. A truly very cool cat. His humility make him adorable and perfect fit against Mick's hubris, Keith's affected devil may care and Ronnie's ever the right sidekick. Lol.
