I remember these when we first moved to Dorset 1981. Me and my mate used to go to Parkstone Station during school lunch break and watch the trains. The ones going to Weymouth were driven in the engine itself. The ones going towards Bournemouth had the driver in a front cab carriage, and the 33 unit was remote controlled being at the rear. Leaving Parkstone station there was an incline and these engines had to be throttled up , they made one hell of a noise, but it was beautiful.
Music to the ears on full power! Those eight cylinder in-line sulzer diesel engines sound great! Undoubtedly one of the better design choices BR made back in the day.
I used to travel on these every weekend between Waterloo and the West, in the mid 80s. I could still hear that diesel disappearing into the distance ages after I had got off the train. Lovely to hear that sound again.
A lot of time and effort has gone into editing these clips; much appreciated by this viewer. It would be good to know the locations; don't worry I won't be there too...Mike in Wales
