In my youth I was privileged enough to go inside, and walk through, the engine room of many diesel electric locomotives thanks to the very approachable drivers in those days. Nowadays health and safety spoils all this for railway enthusiasts. After the Norwich v Birmingham football match recently I stood on Norwich station wondering what might be going on inside this "sleeping" electric locomotive. I've never been inside the machine room of an electric. This is a British Rail Class 90 locomotive weighing in at 84.5 tonnes. It has a top speed of 110 mph and draws its power from 25000 volt overhead wires producing 5,000 bhp. Quite a beast!
