English bloke here. In 1977 my dad took me to Santa Pod raceway to see my first drag race. Everything was great, the sun was shining and I had a hot-dog with onions, as I walked through the pits holding my dad's hand when from behind me BOOM!!! ROAR!!! I span found in shock! There it was. A white Corvette Stingray with chrome straight-up pipes sticking right up from the block! The car had a metal-flake Star-Spangled banner painted from the bonnet fading to the rear arches. That was the first American car I ever saw... This rocked my eight year old world!!!! 🇬🇧🏆🇺🇲 Best wishes from an Englishman making armour in a French forest. ⚒️

you're right everyone riding their bikes and playing baseball with other kids. Atari could only hold your attention for less than an hour - out you'd go to ride your bike some more. America was on top. The envy of the world. Proud then. What happened? It started with... The Cosby Show... and then like... Will & Grace... who wants to bring that radical shit into our living rooms? Network television in the '80s started to Manchurian Candidate American society. We went from Happy Days and Brady Bunch to Married with Children and Modern Family. Go figure. And forget about a shoot-first ask questions later cop show like Starsky and Hutch or TJ Hooker... cue Miami Vice - oh so cops are now you know... CROOKED. the undoing of America went into full swing during the eighties no doubt. Grunge didn't help; Rap just destroyed it all.

@@PuFFerTV98368 I am so glad I am fifty now and grew up during this time, before internet - the world is so jaded now and the spirit of people is so downtrodden, defeated - kids today don't have any go-getter attitude like Hamill personifies in this film. It's a cariacture, it's overblown exaggerated for comedic effect - but the passion and feracity of his character: there's something to be said for that idea, having a go-getter attitude like that. He was relentless. Inspiring! By far, Hamill's most significant portrayal bar none in my books. Forget that vapid Luke sh*t - which pales so much to the fleshed out true humanity here. Annie Potts says it best hosing him down - he's a winner.

She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her character Vanessa! Not bad for her first role. Mark Hamill made this movie just 2 months after Star Wars was released. His convincing role portraying Kenny Dantley's passion for the Corvette and cars in general is what makes it a cult classic for car enthusiasts! so well said- this movie is meant to be light hearted fare and popcorn drive-in cheesy fodder - but really Hamill grows up thru his quest - a hero's journey - Annie Potts did what Marisa Tomei did for My Cousin Vinny. But first. What a gem she is! Hamill's best acting - he's so convincing as the gearhead so bought in, fanatical. Amazing 70's road movie filmed on location - like the tv shows of the time like Starsky and Hutch etc. A golden age of cinema in a way. Not like CGI circus of today - which might as well just be a video game instead of a movie half the time sheesh.

The paint and detail job on the Corvette was indeed over the top, rewatching this makes me miss the era of muscle cars/sports cars. Course, a car enthusiast once told me the Vettes and Trans Ams of this period were classics for their engines and not so much the body. Even by then, car bodies were going to plastic and rubber instead of metal. And older viewers like me can certainly empathize with the underpaid high school shop teacher who has to get involved with shady characters to feed his family.

Other way around…one’s from this period are desirable for their styling. Vettes, firebirds, and Camaros of this era were complete dogs in the performance department. When i was about 7 years old, my dad and I started watching this movie. I was allowed to watch right up to the part where the car was stolen, but then I had to go to bed. My dad told me the next day how it ended, but I've actually gotten to see the entire movie until just now. I'm pretty sure this movie is the reason I love C3 corvettes to this very day.

I laughed at the swim flippers. Genuinely funny moment. She does have a funny walk, kinda bowlegged. Edit: turns out she had a serious auto accident age 21, both legs broken in 15 places. She has pins in her legs. She suffers from arthritis now. They worked the "girl with the funny walk" into the script because of it.

A different world back then. Incredible how fast things change. 70s America seem like it was a fun and adventurous time to be alive. More dangers and risks, but that's probably part of what made it more fun. Wish I had gotten to live it. You can tell by the movies, music and fashion that came from that era that there was just a vibe. Like the skies were amber and everything was so styled out.

It’s interesting to note that the villain in Corvette Summer, Kim Milford, also played in a low budget sci-fi movie called “Laser Blast” that was filmed about the same time.
