It's true that every culture in the world has its fair share of flaws and because humans are flawed too, it's nothing to be all worked up about when it's been proven many times that people do change for the best, sometimes it doesn't require any ulterior motive or reason for personal positive change like that to occur in the first place, be it a person or a culture. (Tho the latter often takes a lil bit longer give or take decades or centuries we're speaking lmao) Often times we get so cought up in idolizing whatever that is we are sold as "perfect" and "ideal" whatever that may be Japan or something else that we overlook the humanity of whatever that is we aspire for because imperfection is inherently human and rehabilitating if approached with equity and forgiveness which is why looking at the world through a rigid binary perfectionist monotone world in which bias or tribalism begins to rear its exclusionary head leads to a not so welcoming world.
