Canvas is a great material. When taken care of it will last a lifetime. got a 8X10 Canvas Boy Scout wall tent that I still use that was made in the mid to late 1960's.
Yes, indeed. The mere thickness of this tarp's construction as well as it's other features indicate a very long life. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Tarps are great as they have a lot of uses around the homestead, farm and anywhere you need almost instant cover. For Bushcrafters and those of us who practice survival skills, they have become an indispensable piece of kit. This tarp is made by the White Duck Outdoors company. They also have a lot of other products including wall tents. This tarp is really heavy duty and will take a lot of use. Thanks for watching and please leave me a comment in the section below!
Nice setup James. Those poles bring back memories from my Marine Corps days. Another method would be to just cut a stick to size for the from with a shorter one for the rear, use a 550 cord between the two to eliminate the sag in the middle and carry a couple of those cheap tarp clips to stake down the rear. Great video!! Love the different ideas in how to use the rectangular tarps to make shelters. Thanks again!!!!!
I left my canvas tents a bit loose when setting up dry. When cotton canvas gets wet, it draws up a bit. If set too tight, it can deform or tear. That was forty years ago, when I still used canvas tents. Thanks for this video. It looks like a nice setup.
PVC is so much lighter and easier. But I much prefer the heavier canvas for camping, esp when travelling by car to sites rather than backpacking in. Great video.
I like the idea of canvas in colder weather, and that’s a decent set up you presented. They’re less worry for sparks from the fire, but that’s a monster thick one! Nice to have though. I’m sure you’ll find uses for it, but for camping? It’d make part of a great deer or turkey blind, protecting stuff around the house etc…. I gotta get me a RU-vid channel to get this free stuff 🙂
I've wondered about my 8x10 tarp going to the Daniel Boone National Forest in a couple of weeks it would be too small. I'll tell you what bud, I'm not doing a traditional tent this time, mine weighs a ton and I couldn't be bothered, until 🤣, it starts raining. Great video dude🤟🇺🇸🍺
Another good video, especially since I do have an 8’x10’ tarp. It’s nylon and has one tie in the middle, along with four other ties spaced between the middle and each corner. Has a grommet in each corner, but not sure about the ones along the edges. Like to try this setup.
As it says in the title, it is an 8x10 canvas tarp. A vinyl tarp would work in the winter with a heater buddy as long as you kept the heat away from the material.
As I made this video quite a few months ago I don't remember the length of either pole. You'll just have to measure it when you put it up as the size can vary depending on how steep you want the slope of the sides.
Great review, James! White duck makes great canvas tarps! I like the ground cloth, do you have a video on how you made it? Is it a gum blanket? Awesome setup my friend. Take care and God bless🙏🏻✝️🇺🇸
Thank you! Yes the ground cloth is a gum blanket that I made. the video on how it was made is posted on the OWA website. It is a pay site, however. Thank you so much for the kind words. Happy new year!
What do you do if you need to be closed off from the outdoor elements say for instance it's raining really hard sideways or something like that? Is there a way you could fashioned a door?
I've been thinking about this setup. As my favorite is a plowpoint. Was wondering if this could be done using a ridgeline instead of a bipod? Think I need to try it out. Great suggestion.
It migth sound like a silly question, but how do you deal with the mosquitoes with that kind of shelter ? Is the proximity of the fire sufficient to keep the bugs away ? I'm from Québec, and mosquitoes can really be a problem.
cut new ground cloth with additional triangle to the rear, grommets for stakes and pole top. now add clear plastic front, grommets for top and bottom pole and stakes
@@WayPointSurvival you're ready good for survival tips! I'm just a guy from Kentucky who spends a few days in Daniel Boone National Forest when he can but I grew up in the woods, I remember as a lad going out with a shovel, machete, lighter and a BB gun and having the time of my life 😆. How I survived, I dunno 🤟🇺🇸🇩🇰
Hey man i just purchased an 8x10 in tan. Two questions, is it like a vibrant tan or a more subtle tan on the site it screams tan but in your vid it looks dull in color which is what id want. and also you mustve had the tarp for almost a year now, how has it held up im hoping to justify its weight with its quality.
The tarp I have is closer to a brown than a tan. It is also been up continuously for about 10 months in all kinds of weather and is holding up very well.
Thanks for posting. I used to use canvas a lot covering tents in deer season . Still keep a few just in case. I have a dumb question. They list canvas tarps in ounces . Is it 18 oz per foot , yard or is just like wire gauges unit of measurement ? Saw a video the other day and never could get the math to work out with the footage.
It's a measurement of the thickness of the canvas cloth itself. Most canvas that you use outdoors is in the 8 to 10 oz range, so this one is quite a bit heavier.
@@WayPointSurvival I have a 8X10 heavy canvas tarp I bought from Tarps plus a few years ago. It’s 21 ounces with metal D rings for tie outs. Dang thing weighs over 12 pounds. It stays in my truck tool chest if ever needed.
Folks carry a wash cloth , and use it to cover top of center pole to prevent danage to tarp, with the poly tarps. LIKED THE TENT METHOD and stinless steel gromits. Family has canvis tents, have to justify the weight. Warmer, but need to air out.. Could carry 2 poly tarps and have a floor. Or milar survival tarp (heavy duty), wash cloth, and poly tarp on bottom. Fire would create 70 deg tent. Add sleeping pad. Nylon tents with rain fly's could last 9 months to a year set up , add a camo poly tarp every 3-6months rain shelter tarp, use imagination, and envirment chages. The fire is not ideal at your front door, iconic yes. Cook away from tent animals like food( bacon and eggs breakfast spatters ) bears like bacon grease. Good longtem sleeping bag covers , as the Appalachian hikers say " 5 0z will feel like 500 lb in 5 miles on your back." Had a canvis surplus jungel hammock, used for vision quest ( indian shawman training) and camping . later in PA cut screecing out , put 30 ' of 1/4 " paricord on gromits rolled up and secured ( used as weight, and just in case) 500lb nylon rope 20' on each end, restrung 2/8 " paricord used square knot. Used extensively , 4lb of comfort, spent 15 years in the PA woods. Off ground , no deer ticks. ( If hunting put string mest ball hammock in game pouche, with mre and military rain poncho, WRAP ORINGE VEST ABOVE YOU, ON TREE To AVOID FRIENDLY FIRE, used a turkey vest ) If cold and windy 40 deg, throw top over you , was your pillow , warm and snoggy ( extra flannel shirt handy) took my knap, refueled, rehydrated, after hike in woods, summer ,fall and winter ,after finding a good view. Also in snow worked well. Saw deer turkey's and enjoyed the wood's . used a slip knot on the main lines to lash to trees , then made hoop with the tail, put in to first hoop, tightened down first hoop , neaten up knot., will hold 300lb support you, to undoo pull tail . easy peasy. Add a poly tarp rain wicks , rain shelter off ground , put pack in trash bag. ( ALWAYS CARRY A BIG CONTRACTOR TRASH BAG AND SHARP KNIFE) Poncho liner ( wooby) inprompt blanket.. A gallon of milk weighs 12lb, used to carry a 2ltr water bottle in pack with hammock, plus essentials. The weight made me a stronger hiker, you have to justify the wieght. !!! and how far or fast you have to move. A summer sausage and ziploc bag weighs less than a can of stew and a cook set , for hunting( apple required) or a day hike. FINALLY, I WATCH THESE CHANNEL'S , NO ONE COVERS THE LOG CABBIN FIRE MATHOD, WOULD LIKE THIS REVISITED , JUST AN IDEA less wood warmer fire good coal bed for cooking . no more sooty pans. Only requires small folding saw for base logs , 8"×8". WHEN A YOUNGER LAD 1984, WENT CAMPING WITH DAD AND HIS FRIENDS, ON EAGLE SCOUT TEST, ICONIC CANVIS CABIN TENTS. CAMP SITE WAS 2 MILES UP TRAIL , HAD A GOOD TIME, ( GIVE KID A KNIFE WITH A LOCKING BLADE PLEASE, SAVES BABDAGES )Even with dollys on dirt trails really showed the lesson of WEIGHT over TERAIN vs DISTANCE. AND 6VOLT FLASHLIGHTS IN THE DARK. LOVE CANVIS but it'll cost you something, just like army surplus gear, tough, cheap but heavy. My parents, used to use car !!! , to erect old canvis tent , they romanced in during the summer of their teenage years. Must justify the weight, we didn't use that tent as a family !! The knowledge of experience , is lost on todays generation. Feel free to revive this on your channel, and use any ideas stirred up by this 49 yr old woodsmen. Miss the log cabin fires and foil dinners in the coals .
Good info from a fellow old timer. Not sure where your gallons of milk are coming from lmao. Old time milker here. A gallon does not weigh 12 pounds unless you throw some rocks in it. 8.5 pounds.
