Julia and I wanted to say thanks to everyone who followed along with us on the trip, for your thumbs-up, and all the kind words and heartfelt messages we received along the way - we read them all and they mean a lot to us! We’ll also be returning to Algonquin in 2017 with new routes! In the meantime, if you’d like to help support our little channel further, we’d really appreciate it if you could share the trip’s RU-vid playlist with friends and family: ru-vid.com/group/PL--m1-kmw2WIj0jpOr66IN4jyJotER0TR Thanks again! :)

I did this carry/portage with my Boy Scout troop back in 1999. Two middle aged adults and four of us 13 year olds carrying three boats, shared gear, and our own packs. It took us about 4 hours to get to Tom Tomson Lake (lots and lots of breaks!).

What you were talking about with pushing yourself... I used to ride a bike as a kid, a lot, and thought riding again after my divorce would be fun. I was so proud of myself the first time I was able to ride for 7 miles on the bike way by my Mom's house, then I realized I had to ride 7 more miles to get back to her house ;-( I had to laugh, but it's a great memory, and reminder that I can do what I want to if I stick with it, and keep trying to be better than I am today. Great video, Thanks

Oh the peacefulness!!! I have just a few more months of the ear numbing horns, voices, ringing cell phones, emergency vehicles, and funerals (yes, funerals) that surround me here in China, and then it is home again... Ontario, I love you! Thank you for the beauty!

Back in '89 I did this portage on the first day of the first trip I'd ever taken in Algonquin. Four college grads, only one had ever done any backcountry camping. It was nuts. (we did almost the same route as you did, but the other way around. Only difference was we went up to Misty lake, and then down the Petawawa river to get to white trout lake, which I remember was great fun.) I've watched several of your Algonquin videos now and I'm impressed at how you two do single carry portages. I've almost never managed that. I've seen how you have a gear video, (which I only skimmed through, sorry, but it was reaalllly long) but I don't think you've shown how you pack your stuff? Thanks for sharing
@gaz781
@gaz781 7 лет назад
That's the way to do it! (2.3k portage) single carry all the way, no multi trips for gear, canoe and camera equipment. and no complaints either. I've watched a few vids from you guys and this is the first time you had ever (so far - you'll see which vids i've watched) mentioned distance walked or travelled. onya girls!

First, I wanted to say thank you so much for sharing this. This place looks absolutely amazing and you two are just "the best". Second, I just wanted to say thank you for saying portage correctly. I recently watched a similar series on some American guys going on a week long fishing/paddling trip in the Adirondacks and every time they said portage, "Port-Age" my left eye blinked. Third, It's the dead of winter here (3 more days till the sun start coming back!), we've seen -30 C (without the wind chill), and boy did these videos make me miss being out on a lake/river paddling in the sun. I think this is what I needed to see to encourage me to make the move to overnighting with the kayaks. Thank you so much for that!

Fantastic. you lady's are the best. thank you for sharing such wonderful trip, absolutely gorgeous. I have a 16 foot fiberglass canoe, it takes two to carry it. ( '70"s fiberglass, very heavy, but built like a tank.) and I play around the lakes, rivers and canals of central Florida and the inter-coastal waterway around Melbourne Fl. but nothing compares to where you lady's are at. Thanks again for the great video. keep 'em coming.

I've been researching Algonquin for my first ever canoe trip this Sept. The "classic" looks like a good start, thank you! Just stumbled over your channel, having a big smile in my face. I am into outdoors, following some channels. Yours is the first one where the music doesn´t bother me but where I like it. Credits for that! But the best: I have been watching quiet some videos from Joe Robinet. Doing so many portages. The kilometers...single...double carry...big deal! And you two: just doing it, no complaints, just having fun...great!

I loved that paddle down Ink Creek, you did a great job showing how peaceful the park can be in this one. I gotta say: I've done a lot of the long grueling portages in the park, but this one is definitely a tough one. Lots of rocks, roots, little ups and downs etc. I also remember the bugs being absolutely brutal when we did it. This was really nice to watch your series and remember my first trip to Algonquin. Thanks for all the work that I know goes into filming and editing these. I can't wait to get back there next year.

nice vids............have to comment on your barrel in the canoe........always lay them down. I have one also and they do fit in between the gunnels. Good practice to keep center of gravity low in a canoe. Thanks.
@ChrisProuse
@ChrisProuse 7 лет назад
Thanks Mike! Agree with you on keeping the centre of gravity low, though all the heavy stuff's already at the bottom of the barrel, and the other heavier pack lays flat in the bottom of the canoe, so it's offset quite a bit. We frequently open the food barrel on the water, so it's just more convenient, and I come from a competitive rowing background where the racing shells are far more tippy :)

We actually went for a weekend trip in the Adirondacks near the end of October - we had a great time and did a little hiking / paddling around Lake Placid, though we stayed at a B&B, so we didn't get the full camping experience. The White Pines and mountainous terrain made it feel like a mix between Algonquin Park and the Mont Tremblant area to us, which was great :)

@ChrisProuse
@ChrisProuse 7 лет назад
Thanks Steve! Glad to hear - for interior camping in the south end of the park, Phipps Lake and Lake Louisa are our favs... Big Trout and Lake La Muir are our favourite towards the centre... and I have a soft spot for Tom Thomson Lake if you only want to do a day's worth of trekking into the park. Friends of ours really enjoy car camping at the Lake of Two Rivers campground, and I've heard good things about the Algonquin Park Visitors Centre. For a day trip, lunch and an afternoon canoe or kayak paddle rental at Canoe Lake would be a nice family outing too. Also, I've heard there are some great lookouts on a few of the trails along the highway that I have yet to check out :)

Chris, this is such a cool video! one question: for the opening sequence, did you edit first, then find the music or vice versa?
@ChrisProuse
@ChrisProuse 7 лет назад
Thanks Temur! I usually go through all the content and put together a string-out in the editing timeline of all the usable / preferred content I'd like to consider, to get a better sense of what's possible. Then I go looking for music that suits the direction / vibe I'd like to take the video in, and then edit in tune with the music's energy :)

Chris Prouse love the strategy! I've been kind of following the same technique, but have way had time with music. Editing is no easy task 😔

Just keep trying! The hardest part for me is knowing that I have a beautiful 10, 15, 20 second shot that I'd love to show more of, and required a lot of effort to capture... but the energy / pacing in the music needs to move onto the next shot after only 1 or 2 seconds! It's really tough cutting those shots short, but I've learned to pay more attention to edit's overall pacing and energy :)

Seems like lots of fun but saw some struggling while portaging, how much is the total weight between the canoe and the backpack? I just got me ordered a Hornbeck canoe that weights 18 pound, about 20 with the yoke and i am wondering if it would not be too heavy portaging with it and a 30 pound average pack! Point for me would be to enjoy the trip not be miserable with the weight right?

So it's an older vid but it popped up in recommended. I did my first 1 week trip last month. Isn't that big portage with the big staircase coming from Ink Lake. You have to roam around a long marsh river then the small Ink lake correct?

Hi Chris, just wondering if you were able to get one of those 2017 Parks Canada passes. I heard all the parks will have free admission next year and I'm excited to explore!

Great video! I'm planning a trip to Algonquin and I've heard you mention that you don't get any cell reception in the park. Do you think it's necessary to have something that allows for emergency communication with the outside world? If so, what do you recommend?
@ChrisProuse

Thanks Charles! It's a personal safety decision that I really can't make for someone else, just because there are so many variables to consider. We canoe tripped in the park for several years without one, or much incident... but we have one now and it does provide some nice piece of mind. If price is a concern, there are options like the McMurdo Fastfind PLB (the one we carry) that have good reviews and don't require a service plan... though it doesn't support two-way communications during non-emergencies to stay in touch with friends and family like some of the more expensive options do with plans. There are also some cheaper options out there that use different types of comm satellite networks on plans (with terrible reviews)... so if you do decide to get something, I'd recommend starting with at least the Fastfind. Keep in mind, you'll likely want to take a little time before the trip to register a beacon with Search & Rescue, just so they know who they're looking for and any pertinent medical details. Hope this helps! :)

That's good - you're out there, which is what really counts! Each time you do it, you get a little bit faster :)
