This was my first full song to learn on bass a little less than a year ago. I play this song practically every time I pick up the bass. Thanks for the video.
Fantastic lesson Mark! I loved the idea of visiting a classic rock bass line. This was a fun one to play along with. And what a practical tip to hit the 7th note with the index finger so that you can then use the middle finger to start the phrase again. I was using my middle finger on the 7th and that jump back to the C was not smooth. Such a simple tip that made this bass line so much easier to play. I would love to see more lessons like this. Hmm, can't think of any songs now, but they are out there!
Mark, At 9:58 you called the 7th a major I think. Yes I hang on every word in your videos. Yes I watched your chord tone video. yes I think you are one of the best on YT. Thanks for the fingering tip from the 7th to the root.
Wipeout is similar. Once you learn the simple four note chromatic movement, you can just move it around. go up G Bb B C then back down C Bb G. Then just move with pentatonic notes up to high F on the D string then back down to low G. The turn is on a high G, then F again, then low G. You did it, you learned a classic surf rock tune!
Thank you for the great lesson Mark! Is there a general rule you follow to decide which finger to start an alternating pattern? I watched your excellent video on Rocco and What is Hip and I understand why you would start with the index finger on the downbeat, but I'm not sure why you chose to start with your middle finger on this song.
