One of the cool things about music is sometimes you can play more than one mode in the same key. This is called modal interchange. In this Now YOU Shred blues rock jam (which is in the key of D) the chord progression allows for the D mixolydian and D dorian mode to be used. The only thing that separates these two modes is the third interval (mixolydian has a major third and dorian has a minor third, the rest of the six notes are the same in these two modes). The third interval in music is important because it gives a song (or chord progression) either a lighter, happier, or mellow sound (major third) or a darker, sadder, or edgier sound (minor third). When the chord progression allows for it, as in this case, it sounds cool to use both (which a lot of music in the recent past (such as the 60s and 70s) was constructed in this manner).
