Classic Books You Should Actually Read

There's a quote attributed to Mark Twain that goes something like: "A classic is a book which people praise, but don't read."
And I think a lot of us feel that way -- the idea of settling down with all 1,200 pages of Tolstoy's War & Peace is enough to make us give up before we've begun.
But the classics are the classics for a reason, and any serious booklover will probably want to explore at least some of them. So we've made this list of Classic Books You Should Actually Read.
There are countless we've left off, and this list is based entirely on our own preferences, so whatever you do, just keep reading -- but here's a good place to start.
Moby-Dick by Herman Melville
First published in 1851, the story follows a sailor's single-minded pursuit of Moby Dick, a colossal white sperm whale. The book opens with one of the best-known opening lines - "Call me Ishmael". The story is perhaps literature's most famous example of madness and obsession.
The Catcher in the Rye -- J.D. Salinger
The subject of much controversy because of its language and risky themes, this is one classic worth a first visit, but also a later visit -- countless readers have reported a much different experience of the book in adulthood as in adolescence. Whether you love Holden Caulfield or hate him, Catcher does provoke strong reactions, and was groundbreaking for its time.
Pride and Prejudice -- Jane Austen
A story of romance from early 19th-century England, it follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, as she navigates the polite minefield of manners, morality, marriage and more. While some may write P&P off as a romance novel, there is much more here -- themes of feminism in the face of oppressive societal norms, the roles of the classes and more. If you're going to read only one Jane Austen, this is it.
The Great Gatsby -- F. Scott Fitzgerald
A great example of twentieth century literature, it's easy get caught up in the intrigue, lavish parties and opulent lifestyle depicted in The Great Gatsby. But beneath the surface is a book of real substance, exploring themes of emptiness, moral bankruptcy, and the lengths to which desperate men will go to achieve what they think they want.
To Kill a Mockingbird -- Harper Lee
Harper Lee only wrote one book. This is it, and it won the Pulitzer Prize, and was forward-thinking and daring and brave for 1960, and introduced one of literature's most powerful and classy characters, Mr. Atticus Finch. If you haven't read it, go and read it.
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
In Ray Bradbury's unforgettable 1953 novel, there are still firemen -- but instead of putting out fires, they show up to set them. Specifically, they show up to burn books. Set in a dystopian future, the novels tells the chilling tale of a world where censorship has won, the written word is contraband, and information has been boiled down to brief sound bytes, rendering everyone's attention spans useless. In a time where it can feel like Twitter and social media reign supreme, there has never been a better time to read this classic and let the hair on your arms stand up.
Of Mice & Men -- John Steinbeck
Set during the Great Depression in California, this novel is a tale of loyalty with underlying themes of mental illness and racism. Its juxtapositions of cruelty and kindness, poverty and privilege make this novel outstanding. Accused of crudity or vulgarity by some, it's on the American Library Association's list of Most Challenged Books.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn -- Mark Twain
Huckleberry Finn is another worthy classic to make the most-challenged books list, largely because of its liberal usage of language that is unacceptably racist by today's standards. It tells the story of a young pre-pubescent vagabond and his rafting adventures. While detractors have accused the book of glorifying the idea of a parentless existence, in reality, Huck is a pitiable kid from a broken home, who is innocent at heart and longs for a home and family.
1984 -- George Orwell
Popular terms such as The Thought Police, Big Brother and The Two-Minute Hate all came from this unforgettable and iconic novel. Even the adjective Orwellian, which has come to mean a rigidly controlling, dictatorial or fascist, is likely the direct result of this novel.
And here's a list of 40 classic books that are always worth reading: www.abebooks.com/books/feature...

Lol! I have found out tonight that the demanding book I have been trying to read, 'Exploring The Earth and Moon' ( 1991 ) by Patrick Moore ( 1923 - 2012 ) is aimed at a juvenile audience. I suspected as much but I find it hard but enjoyable reading. My favourite books are perhaps the Mr Men books.

Wonderful presentation and summaries/ historical notes! Thank you. I took that comment in the begging about Leo Tolstoy "War and Peace" as a recommendation as well, I just bought "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" so looking forward to reading it. An interesting recommendation in reaction to your suggestion of 1984, would be the book which supposedly inspired Orwell, Yevgeny Zamyatin "We". It was written in 1921 and suppressed for 60 from publishing. It is not nearly as appreciated as it should be.

in fact.. I wish I had AUDIO BOOKS when I was in HS.. I enjoyed reading and read CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR in 3 days on a train.. I read the entire Anne of Green Gables series while driving across Canada and I read the VAMPIRE LESTAT INTERVIEW with a vampire series over and over again. But some of the classics, when you have great narration brings those books to life and I think HEARING THem helps you to understand great literature. . You learn how words are to be pronounced, the cadence of sentences and paragraphs etc.. the Tone and meaning of things.. When you read the words flat on a page when you are younger it can be challenging to appreciate all that.

If you're going to read just one Jane Austen book, I suggest Northanger Abbey. It's such a good book, and Austen's best, in my opinion. They're all good, but that's her best. That book is what introduced me to the genre of late-Eighteenth Century Gothic Literature. I probably would never have learned about such authors as Ann Radcliffe, otherwise.

I read books for pleasure and so I choose nerve-biting thrillers. Maybe I've been impaired by this genre that I've tried twice to read The Great Gatsby without finishing it. I actually enjoyed the beginning of the book but as I went on it dawned on me that the book is going no where or the books theme is ubiquitous in real life that its nothing special to read about. I began reading books at 11 and have read all of Agatha Christie' books, Grisham, Ludlum, Sheldon etc that its hard to get similar

Good list. PERSUASION is to some a better choice than Pride and Prejudice. Wuthering Heights may be much better than Jane Austen altogether

Good list but since she put 1984 on the list she ought to do another one that will hit you in the gut ---- The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski !

Good effort, but the choices are a bit too obvious. Besides, most of the authors mentioned are either British or American. I would recommend an alternative list of great classics that tend to be marginalised. These are just some of the top of my head. 1. The Brothers Karamazov - Fyodor Dostoyevski 2. The Egyptian - Mika Waltari 3. Old Goriot - Honoré de Balzac 4. Antigone - Sophocles 5. Essays - Michel de Montaigne 6. A Hero of Our Time - Mikhail Lermontov 7. The Little World of Don Camillo - Giovannino Guareschi 8. Meditations - Marcus Aurelius

You can't read "War and Peace"? it means simply that you can't read books at all. To the list of 'must read' and 're-read' classics (Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, Tolstoy and Dostoevsky) I would like to add: Mahabharata Ramayana Virgil The Golden Ass by Apuleius Icelandic Sagas Kalevala Shahnameh by Ferdowsi 5 Poems by Nizami Poetry by Ali-Shir Nava'i The Knight in the Panther's skin by Shota Rustaveli Dekameron by Giovanni Boccaccio Simplicissimus by Hans von Grimmelshausen Manon Lescaut by Antone Prevost Les Liaisons dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos Tragedies by Friedrich Schiller The Three-Cornered Hat by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen Illusions perdues by Honoré de Balzac Under the Yoke by Ivan Vazov Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol Ninety-Three by Viktor Hugo Plays by Henryk Ibsen Green Henry by Gottfried Keller The Legend of Thyl Ulenspiegel by Charles De Coster Hero of our time by Mikhail Lermontov Bel-Ami by Guy de Maupassant Eugeny Onegin by Alexander Pushkin Poetry by Adam Mickiewicz The Sin of Father Amaro José Maria de Eça de Queirós Short stories by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa Short stories by Anton Chekhov Short stories by Lu Xun Plays by Bertolt Brecht Poetry by Vladimir Mayakovsky Iceland's Bell by Halldór Laxness Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann The Good Soldier Švejk by Jaroslav Hašek And Quiet Flows the Don by Mikhail Sholokhov Poetry by Pablo Neruda Poetry by Federico García Lorca Holy Week by Louis Aragon My childhood, Mother and The Artamonov Business by Maxim Gorky The Mansion by William Faulkner The Green House by Mario Vargas Llosa The Hive by Camilo José Cela Ditte, Child of Man by Martin Andersen Nexø The Stranger by Albert Camus Gora and Poetry by Rabindranath Tagore An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky

Not everyone has the pacience or is willing to spend their time reading a book over 1000 pages. That doesn't mean they're illiterate, neither does it say anything about the novel. It doesn't make much sense to bash out people unwilling to pick up a certain book.

I respect your selections, but I must say that you've missed the bulk of novels. Super novels like, treasure island, around the world in 80 days, toilers of the sea, Robeson crusoe, the black tulip. Some of the best original stuff, for the new generations to discover. And no matter what... Thank you for sharing your experience.

I think people should read all of these books. I do not call them classics for the most part, because not enough time has passed. Also, the author of the script needs a sharp-eyed editor to nitpick it. That is a friendly suggestion. I liked her brief summaries but when someone writes something so short, they should be perfect.

I've read all these except Catcher in the Rye and Moby Dick. P&P is genius, Gatsby is depressing, and I have no idea why Of Mice and Men is in here besides Grapes of Wrath. I enjoyed OM&M, but I think Grapes of Wrath is hands down the better of the two.

@natewalls8677
@natewalls8677 8 лет назад
+AbeBooks.com A couple more that could be included would be "Go Tell It on the Mountain" by James Baldwin, a very well written novel, though not quite as popular as ones on this list. Also, "Slaughter-House Five" by Kurt Vonnegut, though I thought it was a little strange, most people esteem it as a high quality classic novel. Also, I love Tom Saywer, though I do agree that Huck Finn is Twain's masterpiece. Also, try any one of Willa Cather's novels, her writing style is spectacular.
