The VC10 was designed as a long range airliner able to operate from short runways at airfields in hot and high conditions as found in Africa and the Far East. It was also fast and still holds the record for the fastest subsonic crossing of the Atlantic. Its rugged design enabled it to perform a number of different roles including commercial airliner, military transport and also tanker aircraft

I worked at Heathrow on VC10s and we used to turn around and service a standard bodied VC10 with the super VC10 engines for Ghana Airways. Now that bird could fly!

It's tragic we don't build aircraft anymore

I flew as cabin crew with BOAC in the early 70's, flying on both VC10's and 707's. There was a stark difference between them when flying in turbulence. The VC10 was solidly built so that, in turbulence, it was rather like being in a sports car with a stiff suspension - not at all unpleasant. The 707, however, would flex and wallow around the sky, making passengers feel quite sick. One other point with take off's. At 'hot and high' airports like Nairobi, a VC10 would be held on the brakes while the engines were spooled up. Then the brakes would then be released so that we took off like a Saturn rocket. Unforgettable!

The first plane I flew in was the VC-10. As a child, flying trans-Atlantic, I was awakened by the stewardess to be taken to the cockpit for a "look-see." My mother, unbeknownst to me, made the request which they honored. I got to see the coast of Ireland and the sunrise through the windscreen that summer morning.

Super plane. So smooth, so quiet. I was privileged to have been on the first VC10 commercial flight from Kuala Lumpur to London on 31st August '65. The flight time was 15 hrs and & mins. Capt.Ballantine flew her and signed the Flight Certificate. A precious souvenir. Eleven years later in '76, I was posted to the Gulf. I flew to Bahrein in a Gulf Air VC10. Happy memories from long ago.

Loved the VC10. In the ATC I was lucky to fly many times over the years and was able to take a photo of a very close Tornado during refueling. One flew over our house 2 weeks before they went out of service and I shed a silent tear.

The VC10 and Lockheed TriStar were beautiful to behold. Something missing today in the bog standard efforts.

my uncle's VC 10 XR810 unfortunately like so many others was cut up at St Athan in the early noughties. would have loved to have been offered the emblem, the 'plaque', which shows the dedication to the VC bearers.

In 1969 I was flown to Singapore on a VC10 by RAF my first ever flight. I was an ordinary sailor flying out to my first foreign station It was exciting and exhilarating at the same time. Will never forget the VC10 wish it was still around today

A beautiful swan of an airliner, but as ever with British aircraft throughout aviation history it did not sell. I never got to fly in one I regret to say.

RAE Farnborough had a lot of input into its aerodynamic design, not least the tail junction and wing tip area. Most of these post-war designs owe something to captured German blueprints.

I’ve spent many a time hanging on behind these “Mothers”, sometimes at night and in cloud. Much nicer to plug in than the USAF KC-10s and 135s - very smooth airflow behind that sleek fuselage and wing. Only issue I found was at night or in cloud, due to the significant dihedral of the wing, it was easy to get The Leans because that angle subconsciously became one’s horizon.

If they can keep the B52 flying for a century, I can't see why these wouldn't. 4 Rolls Royce BR700-715C1-30 would look great.

I flew in a Super 'Vic' form London to Hong Kong in 1970. I absolutely loved this aircraft. Even sitting so far back in the aircraft on the flight to H.K. it was still super quiet inside the cabin. For me, even when it was parked up on the tarmac it looked like it was almost going supersonic. I can't think of an aircraft that is more graceful in its look than the super 'Vic.'😍

The VC-10 was the first “jet” aircraft I ever flew in as a 60 minute training flight when I was part of the ATC in 1980. Flew from RAF Waddington out over the North Sea. I remember the rear facing seats. Very odd sensation on take off.

Don't get me wrong but I always thought of it as a "sexy aircraft"... the way is was built , the way it flew.... it had a certain poses to it. It shined,it showed off.

I flew to Singapore when I was posted to RAF Seletar many moons ago. Sometimes, when I was over at RAF Changi, I would watch the VC10s coming into land or taking off. I returned to the UK 2 years and 11 months later on a VC10. Wonderful aircraft. The flight to and from Singapore back then was always via Cyprus, Bahrain, Gan then Singapore (then on to Hong Kong).

1973 Heathrow to Sydney with all stops in between. First stop in Australia was Darwin and the International Terminal was a large tin shed with fans. Hushpower by BOAC.

What a beautiful sleek aircraft which I have always loved and admired with a special personal connection. In 1969 and at the age of 9 years old I flew from New York to London to as an unaccompanied minor to visit my grandmother. I recall being in the very last row on the starboard side. Again, what a beautiful piece of equipment!

Many happy memories of flying to and from boarding school in the mid-seventies on RAF VC-10s between Akrotiri / Brize Norton. Beautiful aircraft and some great memories of cockpit visits, especially seeing sunrises en route to Cyprus. I also distinctly recall the sensation of the vibrating floor on the flight deck and wondering whether I would fall through. Be kind - I was a kid! I didn't need to hear the engineer wonder aloud how the thing held together - those huge engines on those slender side bits caused me to wonder the same thing more than once! I can still remember the shock I felt when I first boarded a civilian airliner and all the seats were pointing in the wrong direction. Quite weird falling back into my seat on take-off rather than landing and not having the rear view of the airport as we climbed out.

I flew on one from Singapore to Brize Norton as a child. What took two and a half days in a Bristol Brittania took twenty four hours on the way home. Still ,apart from fuel economy , the fastest most versatile passenger jet going.....

Upside down tail? T tail, keeps them out of the jets ' exhausts. I can't think of any plane with rear mounted jets that have low rear stabilisers. Ok, found one, the A10, but the jets are up high.

I always liked the idea that the RAF werent daft having the Seats backwards , if it worked for Captain Scarlet in the SPV it worked for them , but the VC10 was Svelte for its lines an looks..
