Susan found grandfather again. They were reunited. It wasn't hot air that he said they would, it happened. Outstanding moment echoing back so far and dealing with the early show. A needed victory for the softer morally caring type of fans.

My first ever Doctor Who story. I had a splinter in my finger as a four year old in 1997 and my Dad stuck on the first VHS tape he could find to calm me down... it was the scene with the Cybermen talking to each other 'he must be interrogated first' etc... and my journey into becoming a Doctor Who fan began!

@eddherring3088

There is some incredibly subtle acting from Anthony Ainley in the “I may be seated?” scene. You can see he is extremely interested in the offer and his mind is racing at the possibility of a new regeneration cycle however he doesn’t want to appear too keen and weaken his position of power and being needed by the Timelords. It’s worth noting that Anthony didn’t want to portray his Master as a panto villain and actually studied Roger’s portrayal very closely in order (he thought) to play the character in the same way. Direction would put all this effort on the scrap heap, however there are many tiny moments when a thoroughly convincing character is portrayed. This moment and a lot of Time Flight after the unmasking are unfortunately all to brief. Anthony Ainley was my Master and there was a whole lot more to his acting than panto button pressing (I’m looking at you Logopolis) and moustache twirling villainy.

This is why I said watch K9 and company before you got here because by this point Sarah has K-9 Brig was supposed to be with Pertwee Sarah was supposed to Tom But as Tom didn’t want to return so soon they used footage from Shada the one that got cancelled to the strikes in season 17. And therefore they bumped Brig and and Sarah up a Doctor Also Frazer couldn’t get time off from Emmerdale to feature in any majoybway Susan, Sarah, k-9, Brig, Romana, Doctors 1-5 and they even included a clip of Hartnell too do they had the original too even though he died and kinda fitting since that was his speech when he left Susanand he got reunited with Susan here Also as you can probably tell, Kameleon isn’t going to feature in every story despite being a companion.

Marie-Claire, your genuine surprise and obvious love for the past incarnations of the Doctor and his companions brings a joy to my heart and a tear to my eye. This is the reaction I had been waiting for and I wasn't disappointed. I love seeing someone who has a true love for this show and all the memorable characters that were introduced to the viewers over the years react with genuine emotion to this special 20th anniversary reunion story. Last thing...in case no one else has mentioned it, the actor playing the First Doctor is someone who looks and sounds similar...his name is Richard Hurndall. William Hartnell passed away in 1975.
@joshuajoshua2732
@joshuajoshua2732 2 года назад
This is another great special for the 20th anniversary it was a nice treat of an episode. The only two down sides of this is no Tom Baker who felt coming back was too soon but later regretted the decision and by this point the death of William Hartnell who was replaced by Richard Hurndall who was brilliant as The First Doctor but he just didn't feel like Hartnell but it was awesome to see Troughton and Pertwee return The Brig and Sarah Jane and of course Susan. This could had just as easily been called The Four Doctors.
@philfitnesspt6139

Actually that's not the whole story i read baker wanted to.be the centre of the story & even wanted more screen time than Davison! He admits he had an ego back.then and when he saw he wouldn't have as much he decided not to return and maybe the to soon things entered in a little to. At least he is here in some form with the unaired scenes

@user-vf9qc6io9i 2 года назад
@@philfitnesspt6139 I thought Baker was going to be the main Doctor anyway as appearantly he was going to do all the Capitol scenes whilst Davidson went on foot to the tower (not sure if Hurndall was to go with him or remain in the TARDIS to later pilot it to the tower).

5 years old, and this was SUCH a huge moment of my life. Got to stay up extra late to watch it, because it didn't air at a normal time, and we all knew it was going to be a major WHO event; the biggest ever indeed, essentially a Doctor Who movie. I'm glad to see that the version you're watching is the original. It was "remastered" and extended for a special cut in the 90's which had its benefits, but - well -this is the original, you might say. You have to remember that whilst you were watching Hartnell just 2 odd years ago, the rest of the world hadn't seen him in the role for 17 years (ok, plus The Three Docs), so recasting Hartnell wasn't as absurd as it seems now. There was no home video at this point, so it wasn't as if everyone was watching old content all the time. Hurndall's performance was generally accepted as a good enough job, though I think 1st Doc fans probably would disagree.

I remember when this first aired -- everyone was thrilled to see them all, and I like you was especially happy to see the third Doctor back. He is still my favorite after all this time, and after having seen the recovered episodes on BritBox, Patrick Troughton is rapidly assuming the number two spot. "Not allowed? Me? I can't speak for the wider country, but I recall the Radio Times - with its now iconic cover of the Five Doctors surrounding the Tomb of Rassilon - being passed around at school. We were living in Lower Earley, just outside Reading, at the time (19 Bridport Close, if you want to look it up on Street View!); a new house, with eccentric central heating and wine red shag pile carpets throughout. I mention this because I recall running my hands through it in frustration waiting for this bloody special to start. And I was glued to it throughout.

I was very much looking forward to this, it was seeing your intense reaction to the Three Doctors that got me interested, it was nice to see someone show so much love for characters from a very different age of storytelling. Also, fun fact: for publicity purposes, the Doctors for this episode all got together and did a big photoshoot with a creepy replica of Tom Baker. They had to get pretty creative to disguise the fact that he was permanently frozen in one pose across all the photos!
@alexfletcher5192
@alexfletcher5192 2 года назад
Many have commented that the cold intro with Bill Hartnell sets Richard Hurndall up to fail as the 1st Doctor, but bear in mind that - at least for my generation (I was 10) - your only televisual reference point for the original Time Lord was likely to be the repeat of 'An Unearthly Child' from the end of 1981. It was only much later that his ticks and mannerisms could be observed by us youngsters; via VHS and then DVD. And the phenomenon, now widespread, of having a favourite Doctor AND a Doctor you grew up with (which may or may not be the same thing) wasn't really possible. We were living in the Now, before the great nostalgia boom of home entertainment. Even seeing a Dalek for the first time in four years was a big thing!

The BBC had rather underestimated the cult appeal of this show. When Doctors and companions gathered at Longleat (home of the Dr Who exhibition) in April for the 20th anniversary, they expected only a modest number of people to turn up for the event. In truth, the place was swamped and fans were actually asked not to contribute to the congestion and turn back! And when an even more ambitious gathering occurred in Chicago on November 23rd (two days ahead of 'The Five Doctors' actual broadcast in the UK - American fans actually getting to see it first!) the result was like a religious experience. That spectacle was really the forerunner of the big annual conventions like Gallifrey One, with merchandising, panels and even a cabaret. For a moment, it was a pretty good time to be a fan...

I have waited so flipping long to see your reaction to this! Aww it really hit you in the feels. Anniversary Multi-Doctor stories are so special because it's one of the few shows that can do it and it make sense and be so satisfying to watch. This was the 20th anniversary special. It wasn't the first story I ever watched, but it was the first I ever heard of. Richard Hurndall was brought in to play the 1st Doctor because of his resemblance to William Hartnell. The footage of the 4th Doctor was used from the unfinished story "Shada". Tom Baker had only been gone a couple of years by that point and he felt it was too soon to come back and he caught a lot flack from fans and fellow Doctors over that.

This is wonderful. It is definitely going to join my favourite "return to" reactions of yours. It shows that you not wanting to know spoilers, even the story title, pays off for both you and us (I love you continue to do that, an extra benefit that wouldn't have been possible at time of original transmission as due to publicity etc). And although this is quite often a story recommended for people to start off with when watching classic WHO, it proves by having watched the previous 20 seasons, you have have that extra connection with the characters and the nostalgia (including seeing K9 & COMPANY in its transmission order). Anyway, thanks again for another brilliant video. Looking forward to the next parts. :-) Simon (Worcester, England).

That reaction was more than worth the wait. Fantastic stuff, and it shows the value of watching the show from the beginning, as it makes a story like this so much more meaningful and special. This was first broadcast on 25 November 1983, two days after the 20th anniversary, and was shown as the centrepiece of that year’s Children in Need night, thus beginning Who’s long association with Children in Need. It was the first time the show had produced a feature length special, which was not part of a season, and it was also the first time an episode was broadcast overseas first - in the US it went out on the anniversary itself. Terrance Dicks was given the daunting task of writing the script, and trying to fit in all the returning Doctors and companions. This was no mean feat, but he was an excellent choice owing to his long association with the show as a writer and former script editor, who knew its history and mythology inside out. JNT asked William Hartnell’s widow for permission to recast the first Doctor, which was a nice gesture, and Richard Hurndall ended up with the role. Tom did initially agree to appear, but changed his mind at the last minute, seemingly because he felt it was too soon since he had left, and also because he didn’t want to share screen time with the other Doctors! He did give permission for old, unused footage of him to be included, however.

It's odd to think of this as the end of season 20, as there was originally a 6 month gap between the King's Demons in March '83 and The Five Doctors in November '83, so it was actually closer to the start of season 21 than the end of season 20. Even though I recorded this on VHS at the time, I don't remember it being shown as part of Children In Need.

Then it’s one surprise after another! I think one of the biggest surprises after the doctors is Susan as it had been such a long time but you can tell instantly. I was getting teary eyed watching your reaction to all of this but when you said, “I love you doctor!”, to the third doctor, I lost it. I know you’ve seen the rest so you already know that the surprises don’t end there, though I’ll talk of those later and not spoil things. To see this without having any idea going in that it was a special and not just a regular episode, or knowing the name, leads to a pretty fantastic reaction which is fun to watch! What I don't understand is HOW. How were you able to view this episode without knowing ANYTHING about it, not even the name, or even that it mightn't be "The King's Demons Part 3" or a continuation of Season 20? I mean, no streaming service I've used allows me to choose episodes of a series without choosing the season and the name. Just curious! In any event, it's impressive! :)

Ooh! You ended with a cliffhanger! Will Marie see the title before she finishes the episode? Will the Doctor meet up? Tune in next time!
